How to Control Your Metabolism by Thyroid & Growth Hormone

  • This episode I discuss metabolism and how our thyroid hormone and growth hormone control our metabolism. I also clarify that metabolism isn't just about burning energy, it’s about converting energy from different sources into fuels for building and repairing our tissues such as muscle, brain, and tendons and mobilizing energy from body fat storage. I discuss the role of iodine, selenium, and salt for thyroid health, and how specific exercise protocols, amino acids and temperature can dramatically shift levels of growth hormone release in waking and in sleep. I also describe the current landscape of prescription compounds, peptides and other factors for changing levels of thyroid and growth hormone, and some of their risks. It isn't a state university or community college, however, Stanford's application process and acceptance is quite liberal, and I know in 2016, they offered free tuition as Bernie Sanders was demanding free college ed. I don't know now how it is.

    I had hypothyroidism.. I did clean diet, eliminated inflammatory food and did elimination diet, as well improved my sleep and healthy habits in general.. it did great changes on my TSH and antibodies numbers. My endo. Stopped me on levotirox. Prescription. Just telling my history, everybody is different and can have different kind of thyroid problems . Thanks Dr. Andrew amazing information for us!

      Listening to this episode right now but since you’re on the topic of metabolism, would you speak to healthy caloric intake? If you can include discussion on “reverse dieting”, that’d be especially great. I’m in the first stage of reverse dieting, which is increasing my total caloric intake with focus on proper macronutrient balance as a nutritional approach to balancing my not-yet-perimenopausal hormones with the eventual goal of fat loss.

    As a university graduate with a degree in exercise science, I loved the emphasis on exercise related science. Can you do a whole podcast on the newest science related to exercise physiology and performance and recovery? That would be such an awesome podcast!

    Hi Andrew, you are a freaking chad. I am from Vietnam and just wanted to say that since I started watching you, my life changed drastically. I started working/studying 73 hours a week, slept better, feel happier, less stressed, more energy, can tolerate a lot of pain, extremely motivated, gained weight as opposed to being only working 40 hours MAX before. Hugeee improvement in my life.
    watched all your videos. I was wondering if u could make any videos on overcoming fears. I may have a perfectionist mindset and it paralyzes me to start certain projects.

    Thank you so much for sharing this information. My son was born without a thyroid , the pediatrician caught it early within a week and he has been taking a synthetic thyroid since he was about 2 weeks old. He is now 25, thankfully he is a well functioning, highly intelligent individual. It is so interesting to learn about this again.

    Without a doubt the best explanation I have ever had in 25 years of Hashimoto's . I would love it if GP's would at least try and make an effort to understand this instead of prescribing synthetic hormones as the only solution.

      @@natashacro8148 He didn't mention Hashimoto's by name. He made oblique reference to underlying hyper- or hypothyroid condition. By and large, the most common hypothyroid condition is Hashimoto's. However, as wonderful as it would be to be able to fix Hashi's through diet alone (and many people tout that it is possible), Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition. So it's not that Hashi's patients are low in something. Their own bodies are attacking their thyroid tissue. There are things that can help, and there are also naturally derived medications, as opposed to synthetic, but medication is a godsend for those with an actual thyroid autoimmune disorder (me included).

    This is such an amazing podcast. I listened to this episode because I had thyroid cancer and want to know how to keep the half I have left operating well. With a sample size of n=1, I can verify so much in this episode, but in particular the drawbacks of a keto diet for thyroid function. Carbs are great! This podcast is very interesting and empowering, so grateful I stumbled on it.

    That was such a great episode! Being someone who deals with hypothyroidism I really appreciate all the science and tips for a healthier endocrine system and better functioning metabolism. I’m taking levox…. but I don’t feel like the doctor I see is as concerned about me taking it long term as I am. This episode has inspired me to work with a more natural endocrinologist to see if we can adjust or tweak my prescription. Don’t worry, I won’t come off of my prescription without first consulting a doctor. You’re seriously the best health science podcaster out there and I’m soooo grateful for all you’re doing here!❤

    I love and appreciate Dr. Huberman. I know as a liability he has to say"consult your doctor" but most doctors don't know jack about nutrition. They are trained to look at problems and diagnose prescription medications to fix it and all the side effects from prescription meds. Few mainstream American doctors will advise you on how to fix your health naturally. Hopefully this does a 180 in the next decade😢Dr. Huberman is helping to turn the ship around 🙏

    I want to thank you for the time and efforts you put into your podcasts to help so many people. I have hashimoto's disease, and have seen three specialists over the years. Not one of my specialists explained to me how I got hashimotos, or how my thyroid hormone should be working. I asked my first doctor what the thyroid disease was, and his response was completely unprofessional. He said, "Lets put it this way, you can gain weight just by looking at food". I can tell you that I left completely scared, confused and in tears. You have explained in detail about the thyroid, more than my endocrinologists ever have. I want to thank you again for all the hours you put in your podcasts to help thousands and thousands of people. I have shared your channel with many friends and family members.     I’m a 64 year old woman and I was very fit most of my life. I’m a holistic nutritionist and a certified yoga teacher. I lost my energy at menopause when I was 52. I’ve been struggling to piece together a recipe to regain my energy. I’ve tried many different ways of eating and exercising over the decades and most recently did keto eating less than 16grams of sugar per day. I believe it really messed up my metabolism because when I went back to eating normally I gained the 14 lbs I lost back and another 6 lbs on top of that. Your information has been so enlightening for me. Many of the beneficial things to do have been instinct for me and I can say that I’ve had the experience of not doing some of those things for these last 12 years plus doing keto and see the detrimental effects as a result. I’ll be putting some of those things back into my life. I believe I can be fit and healthy while I’m on this planet and you are instrumental in helping me do that.

    Thank you for what you are doing, I can see it has a lot of work on your part to put all this new information together in a condensed video, I admire your work. I tried L-Arginine 2 years ago but it gives me a tingling sensation in my arms after a few minutes and it lasted for a few minutes as well, so I discontinued it. I didn't feel dizzy or my heart rate increased but it scared me a bit. Can wait for the next episode :)

    Hey Doc! Just finished this episode, thanks again for the wisdom! May I please ask you to cover 2 things eventually as I’m sure I’m not alone in this: 1) A further dive into sleep apnea, especially for those of us who have tried weight loss and despite reaching a healthy weight-to-body composition ratio, and the effects of the CNS on sleep apnea as this is something not enough specialists out there have yet mastered. Also, 2) why our body shivers (kind of like when you have a surge of relief for a quick 1-2sec after urinating, sorry for the example but best thing I can think of) when we take a REALLY deep breath; I usually take the breath in and once I can’t take in anymore, as soon as I start breathing out, I get that shiver almost 99% of the time. I have a history of anxiety/panic so the logical presumption here is that the body is just not used to so much oxygen as it has been used to being tense/reduced oxygen intake? Could this deep breathing exercise be used for addressing traumas? Thanks! 🤙🤙

    Brilliant podcast! Really interesting and in-depth, I love how you make things fairly easy to understand Prof. Huberman. I will listen to this again shortly. I would love to see a specific episode about hypothyroidism or other thyroid problems (I know you talked a little bit on this particular episode). I know amazingly large amount of people who has this condition (myself included) which makes lots of things difficult like weight management, ability to exercise due to fatigue and muscle/bone problems which contributes to a cycle of issues that doesn't seem to get resolved. Again, thank you for all your work!

    Being Finnish all the warnings concerning heat and sauna made me laugh. We Finns learn to tolerate 80 to 100 Celsius heat in sauna as kids. Thank you dr. Huberman for this awesome podcast! Mondays are now my favourite days too ❤

      I realize it might’ve been a bit over the top to say it three times or more but I just don’t want people damaging themselves with heat. That said I love the sauna and I found the science of how it can impact growth hormone levels absolutely fascinating. Temperature is a powerful modulator of our biology.

      In Finnland we are going in the sauna through ALL AGES; including pregnant women, infants etc. All though one should always adjust the heat and duration to one’s own comfort zone! Definitely.

      @@addhoc256 If there are no complications with the pregnancy there's no problem with sauna bathing. It's very relaxing, I can easily believe that cortisol levels go down in sauna as dr. Huberman said.

    Ashwagnda is shown to decrease cortisol levels by 18% which in turn can cause an increase in testestrone. It also has an effect on the thyroid function.

    Hi professor Huberman, just informing you that I am a 42-yo female, overall healthy, healthy and stable weight, since 7 years I have been doing a clean-food low-carb/keto diet (under 100 g carbs/day, occasionally cycled out around 100 - 150 g/day) combined with intermitent fasting (at least 18 hours of daily fasting). 14 years ago have been diagnosed with Hashimoto´s, since childhood suffering with multiple food and environmental allergies, atopic dermatitis. Since on the low-carb + IF, all health issues significantly improved: all allergies gone, atopic dermatitis gone, Hashimoto´s improving (aTPO and aTG low level now) and currently categorized as subclinical, good quality hair/nails/skin, good sleep, feeling no hunger, no cravings, no exhaustion, tons of energy, cognitively superb. Since on low-carb, my menstrual cycles are perfectly healthy, fairly regular, mild flow, mild to no pain, every cycle ovulating (had been on birth-control for 20 years before the low-carb). So in my case, the intervention works.

    Thank U...very interested on this topic. I am off Thyroid medication since 2016. I was diagnosed 2012. It took 4 years of exercising,fasting and healty nutrition to get off Hyperthyroidism medication. My dr. couldn't believe it was possible. Thank you for all that you do.

    Because higher glucose 2 hours before sleep may inhibit growth hormone.. Im guessing that 1 beer before bed would also have that undesirable effect. Thank you for bringing us helpful information to adjust our behaviors. It's so much easier to change a behavior when you understand the "why" behind it!

    Oh Wow! I used to do hot yoga at 105 degrees 😅 it was intense but I felt amazing! Best workout pre-exams. Extreme mental clarity, the next day and awesome sleep!

      @Davit M No, about 10 am, the day before, spent the rest of the day drinking tons of water. I reviewed just a few things and went to bed early. Now they have that liquid IV stuff, which really helps. I have heard pedialyte sport is even better from a friend t who rows in 100+ degree weather. Hope that helps!

    I learned the hard way of how keto messed with my thyroid and you just explained it, but I knew that’s why. I developed nodules and hair loss so I stopped and yes gained a lot of weight. I had a procedure extracting fluid from the nodule but in three months it grew and larger so I decided to remove my thyroid. Since then I have started losing weight with the consumption of various foods for macro and micro needs and still working out the thyroid medication levels, and I’m confident I have narrowed down the mcg that works for me . Thank you for the wonderful information!

      I am 25 and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (Higher than normal TSH Levels, also dry skin, brain fog etc.). If I understood right going on a keto diet would be a bad idea? Because at one part ( 45:17 ) Andrew said Keto diets slightly lower Tyrod levels, which means tsh goes down? Wouldnt that be a good thing for someone with hypothyroidism? Or did he mean the Hormon so L-Tyroxin?

      @@But_WhatIf i am on keto and i had had my thyroid removed. My meds have not changed at all, same as they were prior to keto. If anything i feel so much better. The low carb community thinks that lower thyroid hormones might mean your body is more efficient with less.

      @@isaacakaisaac I cannot remember, but it's in the context of fasting, sodium levels drop, coffee drops it as well, so people who do IF and drink nothing but coffee until noon-2 like myself and Dr. H, a little bit of salt water (I do it around 10-11am after coffee is peaking but who knows what works best) balances you and can get rid of a weird feeling he says he thought was something else until he tried the salt water trick. I definitely feel it works, if I wasn't drinking coffee, wasn't intermittent fasting, wouldn't have a need, enough salt in my food. Some people drink lemon and salt water, I know they had a machine that dispensed that at Twitter headquarters, I think the acid suppresses hunger, gives you something, but again, for those who have decided that this schedule of eating and caffeine works for them, def not for generally anyone! Especially if you have hypertension / a diet already too high in salt!

      @@EZMotion101 Humans can't rehydrate from saltwater because you need lots of water to flush out that much salt. But adding a half a teaspoon isn't much different from a normal meal's worth in your food and flavoring. Sea water would be more like 3 teaspoons in a cup, which would be gross lol

      Fasting increases the most HGH according to dr. Eric Berg. Check his TH-cam channel, he has tons of info as does dr. Jason Fung. But don't just dive into it, make sure you do it gradually and do it right.

    Fascinating to see specific evidence for my experience in this space. I started eating late at night during pandemic. Get up at midnight, eat more calories and carbs. I was convinced i was messing up my glycemic system: became more thirsty, tired, urinating frequently. I gained weight, and unique to me, body fat. This is contrary - a complete opposite food habits and metabolic-affecting behavior - to lifetime habits prior.
    For decades people have asked me why i look younger and fit than my age. I thought it might be because i ate 1 main meal, snacked on nuts, vegetables, and at 39 yo cut out gluten and dairy, on advice of a trainer (my first ever and an invaluable person in my life). For my singular goal to build muscle and stability around my joints, he taught me HIIT olympic weightlifting program. 5 years later I learned to rock clmb, doing late night sessions daily 8pm-11pm.
    My food habits in 20's/30's: maybe glass of wine early evening with friends, feeding my children + meat, veggies. At 9pm daily, after putting kids down, I ate salad: HUGE bowl of lettuces, salt, olive oil, vinegar -- my comfort food. In pandemic, i began eating like "everyone else" -- late meals, extra meals, and high carb meals.
    I'm 2 years late to this podcast. Fascinating. I dont know if anyone reads these comments. but thought id share that it is 100% consistent with my unpleasant pandemic "experiment."
