If you are not getting a spark off the coil, it may be the points in the distributer. They may either need cleaning or the gap might not be set right. I used to have the same problem in my old VW bugs.

I will offer two tips. 1) replace the wire that goes from the battery to the chassis/ground/earth. Not just the terminal but the whole wire. Make sure the connection is very clean shiny metalmat the chassis. 2) Get a distributor rebuild kit. I will bet the capacitor is shot and the points are burnt. Make sure you know the proper gap and set it with a feeler gauge. Bonus, when those are done and it runs pretty good use some carb/engine cleaner in the fuel and take it for a long drive (an hour or so) to run it steady at full operating temperature. That should burn out some of the crud from inside.

I wonder if the spring loaded carbon connector to the rotor was reseated while refitting the wires again; but sounds like distributor points could benefit from filing/resetting too. Good luck Jack, they will get you back to the river soon enough.

When I picked my wife up for our first date together, my truck broke down just outside her parking lot.
The clutch had a linkage problem, which I fixed quickly and we were off.
I later laughed and asked if I lost points having an old truck that broke down
and she said , "No, you gained points by knowing how to fix it"

When you had no spark, I kept shouting at my screen……”Check the distributor!” Looks old enough that it’s probably using points and condenser (capacitor), they don’t like it when they get wet from even condensation 😉, and it might need a little attention to the cap and rotor too 👍. I’m impressed you can find parts for it 😃!

Pavlo check and see if you have power to the coil? It should be bright light one side and little light other side to points! the fuel pump is probably bad, or points and condenser bad, compression? Coil, if not than it’s a bad cam! Don Los Angeles California

The erratic spark might suggest you've suspect points and/or the condenser...
Base plates in the distributor can also wear, causing terrible timing/rough running issues.
The carb also sounds like it needs a good service/tune up...

  • @jim5143
    @jim5143 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is like the classic auto from the 50's-60's in US. The key to reliable ignition is checking points, plugs and ignition. Points refer to the rotating electical switch device (distributor cap) that routes the ignition wires to the the spark plugs (its complicated but it is a mechanical process). The spark plugs should clean and properly adjusted (the gap on end of plug where spark occurs must be clean and properly spaced) with good wire connection between it and the distributor cap. The ignition part of this the coil that generates the spark (you have already looked and replaced that). BTW old ignition coils can degrade just sitting around so get a new one.

I'm riding "old-ish" bikes, here in Germany. The one good thing is: you at least are able to acess all of the parts.
About the ignition coil: make sure it's perfectly clean on it's top end. And take a very close look at that material. It is possibly bakelite.
This material can burn. And then: be a pathway for the spark to go directly to the casing. Try to scrape the whole surface of the cap. Until it's perfectly clean with no black traces on it's surface. This might help! Otherwise: the slightest humidity will allow the spark to rather take it's "old way" towards the casing, again.
You will see a spark at your spark plug. But it will be weak. Not powerful enough to ignite in the combustion chamber.
At least, this is one thing you should do to have one more possible problem sorted out.
    Ride well, bro!

Sounds like your truck is not getting fuel. Try priming the carburetor with some petrol or starter spray. Oh and make sure carb is getting fuel. First thing to check is the fuel filter if not getting fuel. That truck is the coolest. See you in the next video.

Hey Pavlo, you should check your ground wire from the engine block to the body(chassis). it happened to me on my mustang. i changed my ground strap cable and it fixed my intermittent starting problem. All you have to do is bolt a ground strap cable to the engine block that has no paint (so there is metal/metal contact and attach the strap to the body/chassis where there is no paint or scrape off the paint for metal-metal contact. it should fix the problem unless there is another issue like a bad carburetor. good luck. just keep following the Golden Rule of repairs which is to always start with the most inexpensive parts first and then escalate to the expensive last.

Three things needed for a car to run. Spark, air and fuel. Just guessing but it seems like the carburetor need's cleaned/rebuilt. I noticed you had to pump the gas peddle to get it running. If it does it again try putting some fuel directly in the carb to see if it runs for a second.

If that has ignition breaker points, clean or if pitted replace and re-adjust them, if it has a transistor ignition module like a 90's lada, replace the module, ignition problems can be sneaky (runs one day and doesn't the next) especially with the old transistor systems.

That's a great old truck. My money says that fuel pump had been weak for years, and it needed to be changed. It looked like the wires at the ignition coil were not making good contact. They may be worn out so I would replace them. Also the problem could be at the ignition switch. Hard to tell. Have you replaced the spark plugs and points yet? Probably wouldn't hurt. Say Hi to Luba. Love her cooking shows.

Your car probably has a distributor on it where center wire goes to a distributor cap .under the distributor cap there is probably a set of points and a condenser . The points may have Crousion on them or points burnt . Best to replace points and condenser . Point gap has to be set according to engine specifications probably .0016 to.0018 , 00406 cm to .00457 cm
This is only a estimate for Older American engines here

I love those old work horses.
But this one hasn't been handled kindly in the past. It now needs some 'Tender Love & Car' or it will give up. It sounds like it has bronchitis now, which obviously isn't good.
I'd get myself a workshop manual and plan for a good cleanup. These engines are easy to work on. Not over-engineered like today's cars.
It'll be fun, you learn a lot, and after that it will do service for years to come.
BTW : using too much gas pedal or choke during starting often results in trouble starting. (yeah, been there, done that to myself).

You need to clean every electrical connector on the ignition system, there are spray cans with conctact cleaner that do wonders; that little car only seen maintenace when something broke; also, when you change the battery, put the biggest one that fits in the space, old cars start much easier with bigger amperage batteries, try for a 60+ amps one; it will charge slower but it will start better.
And please get a can of WD40 and spray over the rust spots to stop them from spreading.

( im a mechanic) on old cars you usually find one problem covering another and while working on it you create more after disturbing things that have sat for decades .!! you took the correct route and replaced the vital things does it have points ignition or electronic ? .... i suspect now a bad or corroded wiring contact or simple broken wire . you might need to get a multi meter to check continuity , making sure the electric gets or can flow from one end of ignition wire to the other ..... good luck , always enjoy your videos .

you need a multimeter to measure the ohm which is the resistant of the wires and the whole electric system routs, or voltage, The whole ignition system is very simple, the ignition coil one side is connect to battery positive and another side connect to engine distributor (like a switch ON/OFF) and then connect to ground (battery negative terminal or car body), Just google do a little research you can easily find out the problem and where is the broken point. !! Don.t use multimeter to measure the high voltage side (the spark plug cable) !! It will damage the meter.

Lulú and Family

Car problems can make a patient man do crazy things..
Using a test light, with the ignition key “on” you should see it show power at the “batt” side of the distributer.
If you still are not getting a spark then if you have points and a condenser, I would change them. If it doesn’t have points and a condenser then it would have electronic ignition. Although to an American a Soviet car and it’s design may as well be from the moon..

You should get some dielectric grease, or it's called spark plug boot grease, because moisture, and corrosion can stop the plugs from firing. Put it on both ends of the the spark plug wires, and also on both ends of the coil wire. Look at the rotor on the distributor, check for rust or corrosion, and you can use light sandpaper to clean it. You can buy a cheap test light to check your ground wire's, because rust and corrosion can cause intermittent problems. Trace all the wire's from the coil back to the ignition, or if it has a very early type of computer, check the connections. Sometimes connectors get corroded pins, clean both the male and female terminals. You should be able to take a pick to push the pins out if they are really corroded to clean them. If you had to, you could solder in new wire connectors if they are to corroded. If i was there, i would love to work on that old rig. Much to you and your family, your dad was cracking me up out there working on that rig in just his underware, your dad is always doing something, i like him. G-d bless.

If you have point's, check the gap, but check for corrosion, and you can lightly san the point's with a piece of sandpaper to clean them up.
