  • Opened in 1753 the Bonawe Iron Furnace was in production for 120 years making pig iron that was processed in Cumbria and cannonballs for the Royal Navy using charcoal made from the local oak and birch forests that were carefully managed. Haematite was brought in by ship to the Lorn Quay from Cumbria and limestone flux was quarried locally.
