    My friend and phenomenal mixing engineer Matthew Weiss (Dizzee Rascal, Juicy J, MURS, Royce Da 5’9 and more) recently moved to L.A. into a very nice studio. I wanted to share this experience with you, so we recorded a complete studio tour and an interview.
    In this tour, we´ll show off and discuss the different uses of some amazing gear (Distressor, SSL G Bus Compressor settings and more). You´ll learn several techniques you can use to get the sound you are looking for.
    During the interview, we´re getting into the philosophy of mixing:
    What´s the right mindset to have when approaching a mix?
    What´s the role of a mixing engineer in the modern age?
    Are you allowed or even supposed to make production decisions during the mixing phase?

    I like how Matt is not afraid to admit he is eager to learn more on the actual instrument side of things. being in a studio like that would be easy to feed your ego and attempt to fake like you know everything.

    Another great interview and tour. I'm glad you guys hung out for a bit at the end and got a little philosophical. In a way, that included a key take away for me to apply right now - a good reminder to trust my instincts and trust the process. Hard to put in words, but I think maybe something like experiment, put in the work, don't get stuck, stay open and stay alert for those feelings that tell you when something works!

      In the arts: you are your brand. You have to do what makes sense and feels right to you, otherwise you're not participating in a creative art, you're waiting tables. The key to it is to do it without ego, which is sometimes easier said than done!

    In regards to the Rupert 5060 Centerpiece,
    Silk reduces the negative feedback on the output transformer, you can use the Texture knob to add more harmonic content. Silk Blue saturates the lows and low mids. Silk Red saturates the high-mids and highs.

    - Interview aside, the hat is quite charming, Warren, and in combination with the sideburns and loose-fitting 'callards' you are cutting quite a figure. How can anyone claim to be in 'the business' without a selection of Cockey hats?
    - Great advice about re-recording stuff for sub-standard mix elements VS faith in the producers recordings - always a fine line and discretion!
    - Amazing gear on show and really colourful insights into how they are used and what they sound like...
    - I would love a Rhodes - a really nice addition to any tracking room!

    • @Storyvilleemcee
      @Storyvilleemcee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start from the default position that the producer did what she/he did intentionally! Experience will dictate if the intention wasn't truly met in the execution, and if that's the case, re-create it. Either way, we cater to the producer's intention.

    Hi Warren, a big thank you for all the great work you do and the truly inspirational people we get to enjoy through your videos. I have a question for you which I have struggled with over these past months. Just over a year ago I began investing in equipment for my own home studio, I wanted to take my passion to the next level and though I have good amps, mic's, monitors, guitars, computer and DAW, my audio interface was a basic Roland Quad Capture USB 2, which was a good entry level interface. However, I now want to make some forward progress and I am struggling to reach a decision on which interface I should now buy to replace the Roland. I want to go with a Firewire device but I'm hesitant and can't make a decision, so when I got in from work and opened my inbox it was good to find this email and video link, how appropriate, just where I am wanting to go with my music and maybe an opportunity to get some valuable advice concerning the choice of interface I should consider. I would very much like your advice Warren, Firewire 400/800, I/o - Brand, Model etc;,. Many thanks. Larry

    That Altec is actually a 1592a solid state mixer. From what I understand it's like a six in one out mono mixer and has a power amp section for like an old PA. They have these individual transformer cans (that look like tubes) that plug into the back. Some have phantom power some don't and some are for line level blah blah blah. The Soundtoys Radiator is a model of a 1567a which is tube. I have a 1599a which is the little brother to the 1592a (same-ish circuit no VU meter) and those little preamp cans (1588a/b/c's) sound kind of cool and can get pretty hairy but definitely not tube-y. I also have a knack for near useless information if you couldn't tell.

  • @Partybob1
    @Partybob1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    He’s wrong about that Altec mixer being the model for the Radiator. The Radiator is modeled on Altec 1567 tube mixer and the one in his rack is solid state. It is I believe a model 1592 and uses 1588 octal socket mic preamps and is noisy but fun.

    Another GREAT interview Warren! Hey I would LOVE to know what you think is the big difference between the Distressor and the Fatso? I've never used either and would love to know what you think is the application for either?

    • @Storyvilleemcee
      @Storyvilleemcee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely different devices with completely different intended purposes. The distressor is meant to be a swiss-army knife compressor, and as a little side bonus there's a saturation circuit. The fatso is meant to be a saturation device, and as a side bonus, there's a little compression circuit.

      Hi Juan, yes I believe he was using it on a mix! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    • @Storyvilleemcee
      @Storyvilleemcee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Juan! Yeah, I use the clariphonic on my mix bus pretty frequently - so if I make any change to the mix I have to have the clariphonic up and running to reprint the new version.
      I commit most of my analog return as I mix so I don't have to recall a million things, but unfortunately, the mix bus will always have to be recalled. But if I'm not using it Warren can certainly borrow it. Before I moved out I ended up doing a tracking session outside on a mountain and desperately needed and SM7b to make it work - Warren rescued me by having his assistant run it out to me!

    Thank you for the video, Warren. I recently came across your videos and I just finished watching all of them lol. I also have somewhat of a loaded question: how big of a difference is there between tracking/mixing with an analog mixing desk (say an SSL or Neve) and using preamps/outboard equipment alone? Of course it depends on the signal line and the transformers used, but is the distinction between the two night and day? Any chance you could compare the two via percentages? Thanks again!

    what do you think about a reflection filter?
    I see them alot but never in a professional studio.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pe ter, I answered your question in a different post. But I don't mind answering again! Firstly I would make sure that behind where the singer is (the direction the mic is facing) is properly baffled. Vocal booths in Studios are built behind the singer. IF you still have bleed coming from the back side of the mic then you could consider a reflection filter, but be aware that's not as big an issue. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      because it's one of those words that's used so much it loses its meaning. it has become a synonym for good but doesn't actually give any kind of quantifiable description.

      @justinf5422 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be abused, but it's also such an accurate description of certain colorings, though. When I hear "warm" I think "warm", not necessarily "good". But I know where y'all are coming from.

    I do that alot myself with clients although I'm primary a Record Producer that comes with a multifacetized skillsets. Mixers are being the new Producers although *Technical Producers* such as Jimmy Douglas or Sylvia Massy is nothing new that wears both the Engineers and Producers hat.

    I guess I will be "that guy" and disagree with Matt's position that he can and should add things to mixes as he sees fit. Seems like a good guy and all but if I wanted him to produce, I would hire him to do so. If hired to mix I expect him to mix, not over rule the decisions I chose and paid my producer to make.

    If they are looking to sell that wooden Fairchild clone look no further that Sylvia Massy is my bet. She loves that stuff.There are so many studios in LA, it's astounding. But then I recently stumbled on a site called SoundBetter dot com (Andrew Scheps is involved somehow) and came across the list of female sing/songwriters for hire... my god, there are droves of them. So, like I asked in another video, what is greater, the supply or the demand?

    Hey Warren, so did Matt try those SSL comp settings for the revisions he was trying right after the shoot? (@19:00-ish) I'd love to know if he dug it on the 2 buss over what he had dialled in previously. As always, love the channel. Cheers old bean. :)

    • @Storyvilleemcee
      @Storyvilleemcee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I honestly don't remember what settings I ended up keeping. I know I did start experimenting with the auto setting more. It has a more "open" sound than the fixed release settings do. In general I've found it to be less conducive to how I tend to use compression, but beautiful if I want to keep the compression sounding transparent.
