  • Bruce's first solo album in 19 years ultimately feels like a less interesting and competent version of modern day Iron Maiden.

I'm genuinely surprised by the unfavorable review.
Bruce's voice has changed for sure - but not for the worse. There's a touch of the No Prayer for the Dying "rasp" coming back in, which is a colour we haven't heard for a while. The last ten years of Maiden albums have seen him up, up, UP in the stratosphere - which I love, but I'm enjoying those classic rock influences (AC/DC, old Sabbath, etc) creeping in.
Musically, there's a ton of ideas to dissect. Bruce on bongos?! Love it!
I've really enjoyed The Mandrake Project and it's getting better with each play!

Thank God Bruce Dickinson didn't make an album for "headbangers."
Bruce Dickinson made an album with influences from KISS (Many Doors to Hell), Johnny Cash (Ressurection Men), Bee Gees (Face in the Mirror), Nick Cave (Sonata) and also Iron Maiden.
The more the channels dedicated to Heavy Metal talk bad about the album, the more I like it and the more I'm sure Bruce got it right, just as Ghost has been getting it right, being a band that is both recognized by the old guard and hated by average public of Heavy Metal.
I respect your opinion, the only thing I agree with is that Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding are better, but this new Bruce album is fantastic.

My girlfriend brought me this CD cause we are seeing Dickinson and Priest at a summer festival in Greece. I put it in the car and I was like wtf is this. I am a fan of Bruce Dickinson solo albums but this one sounded underwhelming. However, I listened to it a couple times more and the more I did the more I liked it. Still think it's his worst solo album with Roy Z though.
p.s. Eternity has failed was written by Bruce for his solo album and Harris imsisted to steal it for Maiden. I like the Maiden version more too, but Gus G who is the guest guitar player on this track is nailing the solo

  • @MrA5htaroth

Very high production value, and Bruce's vocals sound great. So far so good.
I'm on my second listen and hope that this is a "grower". At least it isn't a 100 minute bore like Senjutsu turned into after the great A side of the title track, Stratego, and TWotW.
There are problems with TMP sounding quite similar to to his best stuff from 20 years ago but perhaps not as inspired. Still, living up to TCW is a tall order. A few more spins might clarify which tracks are great and which are not and whether as a whole this works.

As I found that my opinion is continuing to change with every listen which is why it’s an interesting experience for me.
I kinda feel like this review was an example of “Ooooo new major release! Gotta be one of the first to properly review it whilst the hype for it is still at its peak! I’m gonna listen to it once, form an opinion, film the video, upload it and watch the viewer count go up!”
I’m not saying your opinion is wrong by any means I’m just saying that some of the statements made in this video seem somewhat flimsy and uneducated, especially the Eternity has Failed segment. Anyone who knows anything about that track is that originally it was written for this album, then Steve Harris claimed it hence why it’s on both this and The Book of Souls under a slightly different name.

Totally disagree on your opinions with his voice, BUT I agree with the album review. It's like a collection of B Sides from his career, except nowhere near as good as things like No Way Out... Continued. Face in the Mirror is not only disingenuous, but it's beyond pallid to the point I can't believe he recorded it. Nowhere near the standard of B sides like Accoustic Song. Combine that with the Maiden cover and the terrible production (is this really Roy??) and this was the most disappointing release of the year for me. I urge you to listen to Blaze's Cricle of Stone, which is the exact opposite - a man at his peak with amazing songs and sound and delivery.

THIS is the original version of Eternity Fails. It's Bruce's song recorded before Book Of Souls but Harris wanted it so it got reworked for Maiden. Its inclusion here is for good reason. Far from Bruce's best solo work but Mandrake is exactly as expected. And his age and the effect beating cancer had on his vocals aside, some of these vocal recordings probably pre-date that period and the recording of Senjutsu. Mandrake is far from his best work (IMO) and wouldn't expect it to be to everyone's liking, but thankfully like Maiden, not an album that jumps on trends (DadRock indeed). Whatever, not perfect but for many this has been a long time coming and will serve us well enough.

So, listening to this album has been very disappointing.
Boring and underwhelming. It lacks punch, guitar is missing, Bruce high notes are annoying sometimes and some songs are unnecessary long and with any part interesting. I almost fall sleep with Sonata and Shadows of the gods is weird and with a lot wasted potencial.

Honestly, for me, it isn’t Bruce’s vocals per’se that are the main problem.
I can live with slightly diminished vocal abilities. I think it’s more the WAY he sings. It’s like he’s completely forgotten how to properly PHRASE the lyrics to “fit” the music the way they should.
He sounds pitchy, off time…goes high when he should go low (and vice versa) ..stuff like that. It messes up the flow and cohesion of the songs. Of course, this is just MY opinion. It’s HIS art and music. He can do what he likes.
And the music is just too eclectic (forcing too many different styles together) and…well…just boring. There’s nothing catchy, infectious, exciting about the riffs. Way too many slow parts for a supposed “rock / metal” album.
I get this isn’t a Maiden record…so it can be a little self indulgent and a departure from the usual. But describing it that way is an understatement….especially when you compare to his earlier solo work.
Interesting…I’ll give him that. Different? Definitely.
GOOD? That’s a descriptive I can’t bring myself to use, unfortunately.

I like the album, but what Bruce is doing here is def not for those who are longing for a pure heavy metal sledgehammer like Chemical Wedding. There's a lot of that dark esoteric evil subject matter that Bruce is great at here, but this is something that goes back into his 70s influences a lot and Bruce is doing things a lot differently here & many aren't going to like it and many others will get it & love it. I def don't hear a major issue with his vocals which seems to be a major point of contention here. Yeah he sounds different, but he's not having any trouble hitting any notes. In fact, he sounds fckn great on this album. Part of it may be how the album is produced. I think this sounds way better than the production on Senjutsu tho. Anyway, here's the thing, when I'm in my car listening to music it doesn't matter what I want to hear because you don't have to listen to it and vice-versa. In the meantime, I'll try out this Striker Ultrapower album you recommended to see what's up with that.

The salt in the comment section is real, I can taste it. People out here acting like you murdered Bruce in the comments lol. I love Bruce but yeah he is getting older and his voice is slowly getting weaker. It’s almost impossible physically to be able to hit the high notes Bruce has been able to do for Decades even if you are in good shape . Especially when you reach your 60s From what I’ve heard on this album it sounds like a bunch of Senjutsu (which I already didn’t like) B sides that are even more bland and uninspired. Bruce, much like Ozzy, you have nothing else to prove. You are an icon, you were the frontman for one of the greatest and most influential rock/metal bands of all time. But hearing you struggle to hit high notes and barely sing that well in general now just makes me sad. Might be time to retire.

Eternity Has Failed is not a sequel. it in fact, a song that Bruce had in mind for this album that he was originally going to make a comcept album. Steve Harris like it and wanted the song for book of souls. so this is basiclly his original vision for the track.
I don't know what kind of mind trip people are in when it come to chemical wedding but I find that album a bit boring. Tyranny of Souls, Accident of birth, Balls To Picasso, and Tattooed Millionaire are far better. heck despite is shortcomings. Skunkwork was a decent album. now as for this. I've listen to the whole album on spotify. let me just say, the track order could have been better. Afterglow is a killer track, Rain on the grave kicks ass, Resurrect man is fine. many doors to hell is pretty decent. the last track Sonata sounds like a reworked version of Eternal that only appears on the album "scream for me sarajevo" album. it not a bad album but it I believe it grower.

As someone who loves Bruce's solo material and thinks Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding are as good or better than any Maiden records, I do think that this new album is disappointing. Needs to be more focused and heavy. Feels like a bunch of leftover tracks from the last 25 years, and I think that's what it actually is anyway. Hopefully Bruce and Roy Z take more time to write an album from scratch next time.

  • @LadaHusakLH
    @LadaHusakLH 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think the issue is not his voice, but his state of mind. And not just his. Most older metal and rock bands grew up into know-it-alls with no outside help, no one dares to critique their work during recording and they rush it beating themselves in the chests with phrases like "I did it all in one take" or "we due it all in 2 weeks"... There are some great ideas there, good riffs, even some proper singing (in the finger in the wounds Bruce sounds honestly incredible) but because they rushed the recordings, it suuuuucks. At this age you will make mistakes, so you have to try again, work on it, repair it. It's the same thing what happened to KISS last two albums. Great ideas, terrible executions. Sometimes you luck out and write an instant classic in 5 minutes, but most of the times, quality needs time.
And then you have Judas Priest, who are releasing a banger. And you know what? Rob Halford in one of the recent interviews said that it's harder now he's older and the producer sometimes came and made him redo a part again and again, until it sounds great. There you go.
