  • Adam introduces the first project to the FabCo channel. Say hello to Project PrincesS-Type. The Austin Princess is going turbocharged with a full engine and drive train swap from the Jaguar S-Type.
    This project is about creating a fun, fast road car. Using the full engine, gearbox and running gear from the 3.0 V6 AJ30 Jaguar S-Type, engine as used in the Noble M12 & M400.
    We plan to turbocharge it with either twin Garrett GBC turbos, or one large Borg Warner SX300. We'll be documenting the full fabrication process, from suspension geometry to intercooler and exhaust fabrication, along with building the engine with forged pistons & con-rods.
    We plan to use as many of the original Princess parts as possible, along with keeping the exterior of the body shell looking the same too.
    Thanks for watching!

    Great channel. I am quite familiar with the Austin 1800, not so much the Princess. In the 1800 the "cover" over the hydragas is a major structural component. There is a tube that goes across the bulkhead on the end of which is mounted the front suspension. The 1800 was a VERY stiff car for its time. Good luck with the project.

    The AJ30 engine was Ford block & bottom-end but had Jaguar-designed heads, inlet & exhaust manifold, so it made more power than the Mondeo's ST220 engine, as that didn't have variable inlet timing.

    • @EdgyNumber1
      @EdgyNumber1 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original engine was purchased from Porsche after they worked out they had no need for it at that particular time and needed the money. The heads and inlet were reworked by Ford. As you point correctly point out, Ford then past it on to Jaguar for them to tune for their applications.

    A bit of a shame to start with a six and lose the hydro. I've run Princesses and driven plenty of Jags, the Austin is the smoother car when running properly.
    I'm guessing the hydrogas and engine will be on the secondhand market soon enough though.
    Interesting project. Hope it goes well.

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The hydro was great in its day, but it wouldn’t be much of a restomod if we kept it. Same reason the 2200 engine is going, the car needs to have some decent modern day performance if it’s to be enjoyed 😃

    Only just been made aware of this project and it's an interesting one, shall be following along to see how you go with it. Engine and suspension swaps have been discussed quite a few times for Princesses and while it seems the rear end is straight forward enough, the front end has a host of unique challenges, especially when you're going FWD to RWD. The Hydragas is fine for what the car was but I suspect not up to the task of what you're building and if ditching it gets you the extra engine space up front then it seems like the sensible option for this build.

    • @FabCoUK

    Nerdy fact:
    In the UK, these were never known as "Austin Princess"
    They started life as:
    Austin/Morris/Wolseley 1800/2200
    Then, if that wasn't confusing enough, all 3 brands got ditched for:
    Princess 1700/2000/2200 -, HL, HLS.

      Yes the Austin, Morris and Wolseley variants of the 18-22 series as it was initially called were very shortlived due to the Ryder report late in 1975 recommending rationalisation and the subsequent slimming down of brands. From then on Princess became a marque in its own right.

      BL were all over the bloody place back then.
      Why introduce a new marque when they already had too many beforehand ?
      Furthermore, there was already an Austin Princess limousine and then there was a Vanden Plas Princess (Austin 1100 with leather). So who knew what to make of. Princess 1800 ?
      Then the Maxi was a hatchback, making it more versatile than the bigger Princess
      Ford kept it basic and easy to understand.
      All Fords, then Fiesta.Escort, Cortina, Granada with Popular, L, GL & Ghia trim.

    Hydrolastic suspension isn’t crap, I think Alex Moulton if he were still alive would disagree with you. Hydragas, maintains the car level over the bumps and reduces the body shell rolling around corners, whilst providing a comfortable ride. Unlike most other suspension systems which are a compromise.
    You say you are a fan of these 70s BL products but are quite willing to chop them up to fit different running gear etc. Why don’t you just go the whole hog and cut the Princess floor pan out and splice the Jag / Ford Mondeo floor pan in !
