Blows my mind how random this channel is. Fantastic job Jonny.

    • @MrBenHaynes
      @MrBenHaynes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The word random has been hijacked by the youth of today and is so overused as to be meaningless.
If you mean that the content of this channel is random, (meaning it occurs without definite aim, reason, or pattern), then I'd have to disagree.
It is rather an eclectic mix however.

My dad was given a harvest gold Allegro as a company car in 1977. He nicknamed it 'Allagro' due to the amount of time it subsequently spent in the garage being repaired. Having said that, I'm really excited to see the outcome of this project. It's a bit bonkers Jonny, but brilliant!

Now when I were a lad, me and my mate Dave dreamed of a project like this, a "Q" car (so-named because during the war, there were things called "Q" ships that were merchant ships with hidden guns and stuff). My Austin A40 Devon was considered, we would use all BMC mechanicals, a Healey 3000 engine and gearbox, suspension etc. for example, but the car had 4 doors so that went nowhere. A Morris Minor with MGB or C running gear, was another idea, but sadly life interfered and none of these happened.... Good luck with this project, it is exactly what I would have done.

What a project - I watch with interest. We've all got Allegro stories. Here's mine. When I was at college (hair ago) one of my mates parents had one. And yes, it was Brown. They weren't car people (obviously) and they didn't bother locking it - though in those days you didn't need much to bypass locks. Anyway., one night the car went missing. The police found it on the other side of town a couple of days later. Completely unmolested. They thought someone had just used it to 'get home' after a night out. The car lasted for years and gave simple trouble free motoring. It eventually met its doom in Germany - after English confusion at a German junction resulted in an accident. Luckily no-one was hurt but it was the end of the Brown Allegro. Fond memories of happy days.

Can't wait! My dad had a '73 mk1 4door in' Harvest gold' (slightly lighter shade of poo)
We had that from about '75 to '80, first thing to go was the Quartic steering wheel, my dad was 6'3" so fitted a 10" momo instead,
I learnt a lot about how cars work in that 5 years, my dad was doing running repairs monthly (if he was lucky!) and had to rig up a dodgy engine hoist from the garage rafters to pull the engine 3 times,
He says the only thing he didn't swap or repair was the Hydra-gas suspension, it was floaty but worked, so he didn't want to touch it,
The Hydra-gas system had a re-birth in the Rover Metro and even the MGF used it and it didn't die until 2002, when the designers of the TF heard of something called 'springs'
It was a shite car but we loved it, my dad later bought a Maestro, so obviously a glutton for punishment!

I also owned a 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and that was an excellent, fast and reliable car for its day as well. It is only the thickos that watched Top Gear that believed all of the DRIVEL about BL cars etc. The dumbest people on the planet are people who watch tv and read newspapers and listen to politicians so much so that they believe that they have to pay taxes and that our government has to borrow money and has massive debt and that their are nasty terrorists all over the place trying to kill us and that viruses are actually real and we can catch them and they cause pandemics - Google Paisley Expressions and the Jesus, Hitler and Wizard of Oz post on there just now exposing how we have always been getting lied to and wait until you see what Part 2 of that is going to expose.

I used to borrow my fathers yellow 1500cc (?) estate to go to college and out with friends in the evening. My classmates would take the piss, about how uncool and slow it was. When I said that it would comfortably do 90 fully loaded no one believed me until one day I was unlucky (stupid) enough to get pulled for speeding, fully loaded, late at night, doing 93mph on the M27. I bet a couple of classmates £5 each that my grandpamobile would do over 90 and I could prove it and they took the bait. I then pulled out my speeding ticket and won the bet and helped pay my £30 fine.

I had a street sleeper Allegro Estate, although mine was still a 1300. But I modified the heck out of the engine. i had skimmed MG metro pistons, custom-made Janspeed exhaust, Rimflow valves, a Kent Cams Megadyne 266 cam, high-ratio rockers, Torque Ram with stub stack, K&N filter, modified SU according to Dave Vizard's recommendations, stage 3 rally head but with enlarged exhaust valves instead of inlet valves (for efficiency) Mini-Sport inlet manifold, compression ratio of 12:1, minispares timing belt kit, electronic ignition, and all the oscillating bits lightened and everything balanced. It went like shit off a shovel. Surprising people who were making an attempt to overtake was a special joy all of its own. The bodywork and wheels were standard so it looked normal. I soooo loved that car.

We had two Allegros in the family at the same time and they were excellent and very reliable cars and nothing ever fell off of them and I know from the way the roof lining was put on on these cars there was no way it could fall off.

@@williamwoods8022 I can't tell if you're being serious or not.
British Leyland, although the actual tech was quite impressive, certainly made some "friday afternoon" cars. The concept of hydrolastic is actually really clever, for example, but there is a reason it didn't catch on - it's not the most reliable. (I've literally just spent a year on my '92 metro GTi fiddling away with it)
On the subject of head linings, I've never owned an allegro but I can only assume by that stage they were put in in a similar fashion to Range Rovers, which, at least in New Zealand, are notorious for dropping.
I'm not saying Leyland cars suck, they don't.... well most. Some did actively try to kill you. But some of them certainly weren't put together quite as well, so saying as a blanket statement that nothing ever falls off is plain old wrong... happens with every older car, not just British. The exhaust fell off an old Swift I used to own one day, completely by itself.

Heh. My first car after I passed my test in 1983 was an Allegro. Blue, S reg but with the round steering wheel. Crashed it into a stone bridge after a night out, yes I was pissed, never done that again since, learned my lesson there. It was, as I recall, quite a solid car. The replacement one (same model) wasn't though, and dropped an exhaust valve half way round the Coventry ring road. Ah, the memories are flooding back 🤣

Great choice of car for a true sleeper! I had a company 1100cc 4door Allegro as a company car back in the late 70's after I had minis of my own, and it was driven in exactly the same way, as the handling was the same! With the radiator moved to the boot floor, and the engine lighter the weight distribution will be even better than before, giving it great handling to match the performance!

When I passed my test back in 88 my uncle who was a coal man found me an 'R' registration Allegro with a 1300 twin carb. It had one owner from new and had 6000 miles on the clock. He got it for £50 and when we had tidied it up and che led all the brakes etc and gave it a service it went straight through the MOT. I kept it for 2 years and it was a great little runner.

It was a vivid green colour and I learnt a lot about cars with that one. I think I ended up swapping the engine 3 or 4 times because I would buy £50 engines from the scrap yard instead of getting a decent used engine 😂
