  • Barrett undertook very little musical activity between 1968 and 1972 outside the studio. On 24 February 1970, he appeared on John Peel's BBC radio programme Top Gear playing five songs-only one of which had been previously released. Three would be re-recorded for the Barrett album, while the song "Two of a Kind" was a one-off performance (the song appears on the 2001 compilation

    Just so sad, tragic really he was such a giant both as a musician and lyricist. His guitar always sounded a quarter off key but that was his genius in how he incorporated that into the songs that he created and achieved brilliance. He really had a way of blowing your mind as in effervescent elephant with tuba as the main instrument; I thought i would fall out of the chair when i first heard that. I really don't listen to that much Pink Floyd anymore but can't get enough of Syd Barrett. Shine on you Crazy Diamond.

      I find it fascinating how his songs seem to purposely avoid tunefulness, and almost evade any particular key signature. The chord progressions are unique and quite unsettling, and just as you think you know how the tune goes, he will suddenly shoot off in another direction. I've heard it said that he would drive producers mad as they could never get him to play a bar or section the same way twice. Whether that was a conscious decision by him or just a product of his state of mind I don't know. Syd really was a creature of raw, untameable creativity - I always feel like he was saying "You're welcome to enjoy what I'm playing, but I'm not playing it for you".

    The world owes David Gilmour a massive thank you for being the man who made Syd Barrett’s two genius solo albums, along with additional tracks comprising basically a third album, a reality. Yes others, including Roger Waters, were involved early on. And they all deserve credit for their patience working with Syd, and for adding much-needed structure to Syd’s songwriting; which by 1969 could best be described as a sort of haphazard genius.
    I know that Jimmy Page was interested in producing Syd as well at this time. But I’m not sure anybody other than David Gilmour could’ve pulled it off. Considering how long he had been friends with Syd, he would have known better than anyone how to pull the most out of him. And also I’m sure there was a little bit of guilt involved in being his replacement in Pink Floyd, which would have given him the patience and fortitude required to do the right thing and to see the albums through. Without l doubt there must have been times he wanted to throw in the towel, but Gilmour has always been a class act, and he stuck with his mate, Syd.
    But, even so, who could have guessed just how poignant these albums stand, even to this day; not as anomalous footnotes to Syd’s career, but as something completely unlike anything the world had heard at that point, and even to today. His solo work, just as with Pink Floyd, has a timelessness to it. And of course there is the vibe of a “mad genius” at work, which was punctuated moments of levity and even hilarity, as if to remind us that on some level the great artist was still very present, working his craft. Thus it is appropriate that his first album is entitled “The Madcap Laughs”, serving almost as acknowledgement of these two seemingly juxtapositional elements (mad genius and levity).
    Comparing his solo work with his work with Pink Floyd, however, is a dead-end in my opinion, because the two are really very different. I feel his solo work instead stands well-enough on its own merits, and offers a final yet most interesting, and even satisfying, coda to his career as a recording artist, and overall crazy diamond.

    I thought the new Pink Floyd compilation would have been priced moderately...too expensive...I wanted to hear the remastered takes of Scream Thy Last Scream, Vegetable Man and Apples & Oranges. David Gilmour or someone changed the lyrics to Matilda Mother which sound lame. Pink Floyd struggled after Barrett until Dark Side of the Moon. Arnold Layne and See Emily Play were the only big hits until '72/'73 !!

    • @vsmicer
      @vsmicer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's not exactly accurate or fair, not long after Barrett was out, the rest of the band stopped trying to have hit singles as they knew it wasn't their forté and went for the album market, doing increasingly well and culminating in 'Dark side of the moon'. However, some of their best loved tracks come from that 68-72 period, including 'Set the controls for the heart of the sun', 'If', 'Remember a day', Fat old sun', 'Careful with that axe Eugene', 'One of these days' and 'Echoes'. Two albums were notably successful - 'Atom Heart Mother' and 'Meddle', if not in the stratospheric sales of 'Dark side' - but then, few albums in history have been that successful. They also - in an effort to find their own voice - recorded three film soundtrack albums, 'More', 'Obscured by Clouds' and 'Zabriskie Point'.

    • @kravenraven3986
      @kravenraven3986 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aquatichighs I would say Atom Heart Mother & Meddle are really good, but they didn't break through the way that Dark Side did. Meddle was almost at that point though, you could tell from listening to Echoes that they were on the cusp of hitting it big.
