In aircraft construction a rule of thumb is all electrical lines are routed above fluid lines. Also use rubber cushion clams to secure the lines to prevent chafing. Use heat guards around exhaust or hot components. Allow proper slack for flexing and labeling of lines for ease of identification and servicing. The wrecker is definitely ONE OF A KIND. It’s a beast!
- also, Aircraft usally restrict hot components to a single enclosure - no piping of the hot gases to the aft end..
At least it does not have potentiometers and is not going into outer space. Then your shafts would need double jam nuts and a drop of thread locker, plus a mark of paint pen signifying it was tightened per procedure.

Why would anyone use a 3spd transmission when you could get an allicin and then have an indestructible 6spd put that on a 2 SPD transfer and get 12 speeds
@@darronshirley7886 I can't argue or disagree with this logic, and the Allison 1000 is exactly what I would have used in this build.
In the late '60s, I was riding with my dad in his custom built oil field auger rig. Very similar construction with 4 wheel drive and steering. We were returning from a job, rolling off the tehachapi mountains when the transfer case exploded painting the back window with hot oil. I could see chunks of the gear bouncing down the road. We coasted for 3 miles to a farm house and used their phone to call for a tow. Back in the shop there was nothing but the shifting fork left. We spent 2 days installing another gearbox. You're shop videos bring back fond memories of working with my father.

I think you need a rear transmission mount, before the tcase. Will take all the load off that center section between the tcase.

Yeah,and the main trasmission is misaligned with the T-case. You could see how the whole engine dropped when they separated them.

I am always impressed by the diagnosis and repair by Matt and his crew.
At the same time, I await the windscreen replacement and the roof/ceiling repair.

Hello Matt (and crew). I had the pleasure of making my first trip to AZ/UT from my home in northern Idaho last week. We stopped by your shop on our way home. It is absolutely beautiful in Hurricane! Camera does not do a justice. They let us tour the yard but said we couldn't check out the wrecker as you guys were fixing the transmission. Glad I got to see the Morrvair and banana in person, thanks for the T-shirt!
Recoveries are great to watch, but seeing you guys improving and building things is just as good.
I watch old videos and feel anxiety because the upgrades, that I KNOW about, aren't there yet :) I believe the upgrades are more than 11% better and well deserved.

I have custom built several items from simple trailers to off-road machines. No matter how much you conceive and design, there is always room for improvement. Your whole team does an awesome job! Keep up the good work.

I watched the whole process of building the wrecker and I always wondered about the reliability. It has surprised me, no, amazed me, how reliable it's been. With everything you've engineered on this, I can only call it a HUGE success! Great work, all of you!
I've watched the build of the wrecker from the beginning and it has been fun to watch. Sometimes we don't know we have put to much on till we have put it through its paces. I look forward to seeing how the modifications have helped the the performance of the wrecker.
After having watched all of the videos, I think that, for the first time, at 21.43 minutes,, I saw Matt finally used a ballpien hammer, and not his usual choice of claw hammer.

I feel like you should have a shear coupler or reset able torque limiting coupling in the drive train for 100% reliability. Well designed heavy machinery have them - never seen it in the automotive world.

But, it just dawned on me why your videos and team are probably some of the most important content available on TH-cam- Impeccable Positivity!! In all honesty, when it comes to the app, I pay for TH-cam, so I seek out TH-cam channels/videos to watch. I'm not much for chasing brands. I'm happy for you, I've been glad to see the channel grow over the years, but I'm not even sure I need another app on my phone. But, I wish you all the best of luck with it.👍

I have an idea to improve your removal and replacement of your cab for your wrecker. Write up a checklist that covers the removal and then make another checklist for the replacement of the cab. Then you guys won't forget anything when you take it off. I know that means Matt would have to get really organized. But it really would help quicken up the process.. And like matt just said... "We've taken the cab on and off a lot But not enough to remember how". Writing down your process Well improve your time by one 100% 😎😁 Tom seems to be the one that would really like a written down process!!!!

Tom engineered breaking points for job security. The best thing after exposure to poison ivy or oak is to use gojo hand scrub.
Fun fact: the procedure of designing, building, testing and approving a regular button/knob for turning on the lights in a normal car can take a year
Designing the machine that tests the button by pushing it over and over' can take another year... and millions in R&D and trial and error... if it's for the military.
Funny fact about this fun fact: the procedure nowadays is purely in regards of utilizing the cheapest possible materials, to mass produce.
This fact used to mean quality at one point of time in cars, now it just means to increase profits
What pisses me off, is that in over 100 years of design and execution, the perfect button has already been developed and implemented.
They only keep redesigning the button to justify engineers.

The evolution of the big off road wrecker continues, and there is always room for improvements on any vehicle or project. I'm glad Tom is becoming the right hand man for the shop, but that is not to say less about Jefe or the rest of the crew. And Rhett is really turning into a top hand too! Some of us still miss Lizzy and Trevor, but we realize why they left.🥲
I love everything about this wrecker. I love watching you work on this thing more than I do the recoveries tbh. I wish you guys would dedicate an entire series to nothing but the wrecker. Fix the holes in the roof. Work on the interior. I would even watch Robbie Layton’s channel again if they were to work on the body and paint. This thing deserves your full attention. Nothing else could touch it if you would just really concentrate on what it needs . So quit with the temporary fixes you know you’ll never get to until you have to… 😁

Pro Tip for poison oak, ivy, mosquito bites, etc.
A lot (or all of) the itching sensation comes from a specific subdermal protein buildup that can be denatured with heat. Easiest thing to do is to run hot (but not scalding) water over it for a minute or two which should give 6-8 hours of total relief.
Your heavy wrecker is an amazing machine!! Don’t forget that K.I.T.T had a mobile workshop following him around for the trail repairs! I'm pretty sure Knight Industries had a bigger budget too. M.O.R.R. for the win!
The wrecker is the most complicated and custom build in your fleet. Things will take time to refine, update and find the bugs in your system. It’s great to watch the process of thing breaking and finding the fix. In due time, the wrecker will be 100% and be a beast!

Since you are fixing the beast, I have a suggestion on the airlines one the firewall: Use nickel plated brass push-to-connect fittings instead of plastic. Also be sure to use ferrules on the inside of the air lines/tubing to make sure it holds its shape. I use to buy metal fitting from a company called Norgren. I suspect SMC also has these. Great machine!

Never seen more idiots in a group there's a forklift sitting there and these idiots push or pull that junk pile absolutely NOT the biggest off-road wrecker in the USA in and out of the shop by hand FYI the US military has what is made by Oshkosh and it's actually made to tow broke down TANKS and has 2 60 ton winches and has pulled over 100 tons out of the mud they have Spud's on hydraulic rams that can go 5 feet deep in the ground and it's 8 wheel drive at 1200 HP

Dear morr if I remember correctly those wheel planetary’s are what’s breaking your transfer cases, they gear you down at the wheels but not on the drive train, you’ll probably have to go military 5 ton transfer, like I said I think I’m right, but can’t fully guarantee my memory, please research this, I’m not a critic, but an old guy trying to help

Gearing down at the wheels is also gearing down the drivetrain. The idea of the planetary hubs is that it takes the load off the drivetrain because it’s geared down at the hubs. That way the drivetrain doesn’t have to put out as much torque.
With how that broke it’s likely flexing and stressing the adaptor. The chassis may not be as stiff as it seems so it’s likely they need more flex in the drivetrain mounts.

Watching your inspection of the shift sequence of the doubler, If it were mine (IF😊) I would make the control lever longer for more accurate fork positions. I realize it complicates linkage back in the cab, but you guys seem to be about solutions not problems. Love your channel! Everyone there is awesome ✌❤

We truly stand the on the shoulders of giants! I'm super impressed with Matt and crew's knowledge of the equipment they work on, and think of the engineering, design, and manufacturing of so many that we have equipment like this fairly easily attainable. Amazing, just amazing.

Matt I'm absolutely loving the videos! When I was just a lil shrub puppy we used to have a couple off road recovery units early 60's International Scouts! Based on experience I would have kept one air tank and plumbed a quick connect to it for use in airing up tires or possibly even using air tools.

Matt, you did exactly what the engineers I work with do every time they design and implement something. So don't feel bad 😂. Simplicity is king when it comes to durability!
To hear this rig fire up was a relief . I was not really worried about the engine but to see it move I did let out a deep sigh of relief . Gear heads may understand a little better than most " that was a lot of metal shavings that came out of the bearing . I hope you got all of it I feel pretty good that you did . While addressing some of the rigs issues " The fuel lines " make sure you don't let any issues slip your mind .... this time . :D Knowing this rig is a work in progress I'd like to say to the whole of the Ethernet this rig is pretty damn solid and as it's used issues will come up and get fixed as they do it will only get better .

As a suggestion, get all your bearings and gears CRYOGENCIALLY SURFACE-HARDENED where they dip the metal parts in liquid nitrogen to ensure ONLY SURFACE-HARDENING which improves wear and tear by 2x to 3x over unhardened metals!
Look up up "Cyrogenic Surface Hardening" on Google for machine shops that do this OR you could learn how to do it yourself using internal shop-built liquid nitrogen baths for your own parts that can so surface-hardening only OR do full-cryo-immersion inorder to super-harden/super-strengthen an entire part through-out. Depending on the stainless steel or tool steel alloy blend, you don't always get a more hard but BRITTLE part, you can ensure you get a properly super-strengthened part!
PLEASE ALSO use something like X1R oil additives to ensure slipperiness of metal-to-metal contact in your gears and bearings --- You'll save money in the long-run! (Make your oil additive does NOT use Teflon as part of the additive!) Look up X1Rcorp to find out more about their oil and transmission additives!

When you removed the broken piece, in front of the doubler. Your transmission dropped down a fair amount. If possible, I would add some mounts to the rear of the engine. So that there isn't so much unsupported weight between the engine front mounts and the transfer case.
I love your wrecker! Maybe that will help it a little. Also there is tubing called fire hose for wiring on crawlers that work on forest fires. Maybe that would help shield your wiring better.
The way that dropped I thoughts the same thing....seems like a lot of unsupported and unbraced weight.
I would guess it's the combination of flexible enginemounts in front, and fixed rear mounting point... gotta choose one kind of mounting, can't do both...
I have turned a wrench or two on certain vehicles in my lifetime. And I’ve been considered not half bad, but my hats off to these fella’s! they’ve been doing some things in this video that are simply flat out over top of my head!! BRAVO To you Matt! Bravo! BRAVO TO YOU TOM! Bravo!

Love the videos guys, keep up the good work, when I saw that transmission tail broken on the wrecker I remembered there's company's like PPE that make transmission braces for the Allison transmission, perhaps a custom brace for your transmission could help keep that from breaking again.

I would say as long as it’s the parts themselves that are breaking, not bad workmanship (bad welds for example) I wouldn’t worry too much. Crazy machine that has a lot of kinks to work through. You know this in the race car world, you replace a weak part with a stronger part just to find out the next weak part down the line.

Does Don Quixote (Matt) tilt at windmills with a roofer's claw hammer? Good to see Tom's use of an engineer's ball pein hammer. I'm with Ray, everything's a hammer.
Great story - very satisfying to see problems resolved. One bit of frustration: Tom says "Is that a blind hole? How do we get that (bearing) out?" Next shot, Matt is holding and inspecting the bearing. Oh well, every expert needs to have some trade secrets - that is what makes the expertise marketable. No worries about the beefy throne tipping over in the wind. Is Peanut still in it? (Left the yard with Peanut astride the throne, Peanut not seen upon return from Sand Hollow.) And were those MattStraps lifting the doubler and transmission?
That adapter plate broke because the Engine is on rubber mounts and the transfer case is mounted solid to the frame. When you are on the trail the torque is loading the housing not the motor mounts like its supposed to. Mount the t-case on rubber mounts so the torque load stays inside the trans and is transmitted to the motor mounts. Its also possible that the engine bouncing on the trail is creating a leverage on that adapter plate. Either way changing to a steel one will only move the load to the next weak spot. Keep up the great work guys!
I have been a fan of the TowMORR wrecker since the first frame channels were cut. It is just the right size, and weight, and I always put the biggest tires that will fit on every vehicle I have. Although the boom is still a couple of feet too short. Add 3 feet to the bottom.
Einstein, a relatively smart guy said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
Anyone that has made their own vehicle from scratch also says, make it easily maintainable.
To deal with the continual heat problem, consider some T-bucket headers and side pipes ;)
On a serious note, I'd spend some time figuring out why that adaptor broke, besides dismissing it as "just aluminum." Next time it will be the tail of the transmission which is also "just aluminum." Somehow a bending force is being applied. Maybe hits on the belly pan, transmitted up through the mount, or maybe something else. In other vehicles, there would be a transmission mount and a transfer case mount.

That wrecker kept going despite a bunch of failing parts that would have put anything else out of service. Kudos to the designer, builders and mechanics. Looking forward to seeing how the re-manufactured version deals with what's thrown at it in the months to come. Maybe it could get a proper roll cage one day?
It didn't last a year until all of the engineering/fabrication defects started showing up. It's almost like they do it for content.

I mean ofcours I miss Rudy n then Trevor and on top of all, Lizzy, they were great people and so fun to watch them work, but the core is still Mat himself, he is a kind, forgiving and very fun sole! and his developing friendship with TomTom is so heartwarming to watch.

Hey matts.. I think that if that part that join the gearbox with the reducction box broke out is for some reason. So, if you put steel in that join maybe will break the aluminum gearbox instead. maybe you have to improve the reduction box fix point, and add some rubber on it. Just a thought. thanks.

Wow, nicely done. I sure hope you charge clients enough for the wrecker service. It's a beast and I'm sure it requires a lot of maintenance. Fun to watch this episode.
Im sure you guys know this already but yeah um... dont go solid mount front to back. When you bind under hard load its going to NEED to flex and twist or something is going to break. Regardless how much strength you built into this frame it will still never be absolutely rigid enough. Isolate the drive assembly front to back and anywhere it mounts to the frame you need bushings, rubber or poly dont matter.
Matt, I’m pretty sure that before you put the cab back on you need a center support for the doubler.. Now that it’s made of steel it’ll need some support… it’ll break again in the same fashion… 😢
WRECKMORR is what I call the wrecker. I know they don't it just popped into my head one day and and it stuck lol.
I've watched from the beginning till now in a month. It helped distract me from tooth infection and followed by the pain caused after the extraction (which took over an hour) then followed by 2 weeks of infected socket. I love these guys. I even shed a tear when Lizzie left!!!

Along with cab removal gear, you need a cable moving gear, or a conveyor apparatus to move the chassis in and out of the shop.
