One of the greatest battletank that has ever built. That even until now still remain in the active service with some few countries today, its all because of its great reliability, durability and easy handling.
The increased distance between the first and second road wheels is clearly visible. It appeared to compensate for the change in the weight balance (lengthening the supporting surface) after increasing the frontal armor of the hull on the T-44
Great machine for 1955! JK it's a nice vehicle for support purposes, great mobile arty and bunker buster, for the fight with modern MBTs just arm your infantry with modern anti-tank guided rockets and get few modern helicopters.

Nobody has answer but i think the gap is deliberately made in order to maintain the length of the tank..and not install the 6th wheel because the T-54 tank wheel is very big...this is the one reason that comes to my mind else you can have your say

It only requires you to press a button and then gives you distance on a screen while optical rangefinders of the era required some time and a lot of attention.

Designed in 40s, and still in service...
the look that inspiring...still wonder why the first and second road wheel have some distance.

To distribute the weight evenly.
If you notice different vehicles built on the same chassis the wheel spacing and thus suspension differs.
I heard people say it's to accommodate the crew escape hatch between the torsion suspension bars...
