The all-new Nissan Sentra is back. Sentra is the best selling nameplate for Nissan in Canada and the US. The Nissan Sentra used to be in the same conversation as the Civic and Corolla but has become almost forgotten. This new Sentra changes all of that. The all-new 2020 Nissan Sentra compact sedan is about two inches lower and two inches wider than the previous generation. The exterior also incorporates Nissan's latest design language found on its other dramatic sedans, including its signature V-motion grille, thin LED headlamps and floating roof. Inside is either a 7-inch or 8-inch display audio screens. However the buyer needs to buy the SV trim and higher to get the larger screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the base auto gets heated seats but the manual does not. LED lights start on SR trim and the SR premium gets unique LED headlamps. The 2020 Sentra also features a new, fuel-efficient 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine rated at 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque - increases of 20 per cent and 16 per cent respectively over the previous generation's 1.8-litre engine. The Sentra is available in either a 6-speed manual transmission (base S model only), or with the latest generation Xtronic transmission. The big news is the addition of independent rear suspension. Advanced safety now available across the entire family of Nissan sedans, include standard Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six advanced driver-assist systems that includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Intelligent Emergency Braking, and High Beam Assist. The new Sentra also offers standard 10 airbags, Rear Door Alert, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Intelligent Driver Alertness.

I like the higher mounted screens, they keep your attention up closer to the road. While it may not seem like much, a few inches up or down impacts peripheral vision significantly, and allows you to switch between road and screen faster.

Give Nissan credit for putting effort in redesigning a car in a shrinking segment related to sales compared to CUVs and SUVs. As a gen Xer I appreciate the better ride and sportiness of a sedan over a SUV along with usually better pricing/discounts at dealership. A sedan has a lower roof so you can more easily load bikes and kayaks using an aftermarket roof rack system like Yakima or Thule.
Nice car but with the new Hyundai Elantra coming out along with possibly an new redesigned Civic the Sentra faces an uphill battle.
The compact car segment gives the best value for money.

When I met my Wife, she was driving a brand new Nissan “Classic” (body Nissan ‘Sunny’) in 1992. It was plainer than plain. Worse, it was an automatic gray...on gray. I’m quite impressed with this new Nissan Sentra...It certainly has come far, indeed. It ‘looks’ expensive. I love it’s uniquely stylish good looks (as well their latest Maxima). Best looking sub-$20k manual, by far! Way better looking than Honda these days. Let’s see if they can make a dent this time around. They have the style, they just need to nail their quality/reliability issues. Thanks for the video.

I am currently looking for a good, stylish, well equipped commuter to drive to and from work about 20 miles both back and forth. One that is budget friendly but doesn't scream cheap. Everyday I'm teetering with this, the Jetta, the Civic, the Corrolla, etc. but every dam time I see this Sentra on the road I'm drawn back into it. It just has more of that it factor then the others. All of the video reviews I've seen including this one don't really do it justice. In person it really does look better than in the videos both inside and out. When I see one parked I look into the window like a creeper to check out the interior as well. Like it was mentioned it does look like a baby Altima or Maxima but once you get close to it you can tell it's something different. My decision is made and I will be purchasing one of these.

Over the last 10-15 years, Nissan has had a RELIABILITY disaster on their hands. Garbage CVT transmissions. If Nissan want to come back, they should match the Hyundai/KIA's 10-year/100K mile warranty on their power trains. The trust is gone. That said, Nissan did a great job on this redesign. Looks really good inside and out.

I am blown away... at the looks and the design... as the current owner of a 2017 Sentra.... I think that also will look really good on the back of a wrecker when the JATCO transmission goes at 50,000KM... despite not being driven recklessly and being regularly serviced.. ( go with a Corolla or a Honda Civic ) you won't be broken down on a roadside swearing 3 years from now.

I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 198,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.

Here in the US we are running out of sedans and manual shift sedans because there's a crossover/SUV/pickup truck craze that I just can comprehend. Good for any country/region that still maintain sedan sales levels. This Sentra seems like a good daily driver even though I'm not sure how it's rated safety-wise because I'd be more comfortable with a car that has a solid body structure/crumple zones driving alongside 18 wheelers on the highway. I feel old, I can't believe I missed out on being a 'Millenial' where being undecided is totally acceptable.

Imo, the suv craze would not be so strong if car makers did not make the seat hip point so damn low. It is difficult to get in and out of a new civic, for example, but civics of 10 years ago were much easier. This goes for many compact cars. People buy suvs cuz they are sick of sitting on the ground. Car makers need to go back to making passenger cars with normal seat heights from the road surface.

Will be going for test drive since dealerships are open now here in GTA

It looks ALMOST like the Toyota Camry XSE trim with the black roof. Most of the new compact economy cars are pretty good looking now. It will be interesting to see if the CVT holds up in the long run

I have a 2008 which I love because of the low end torque...155K miles. Would like to drive until 200K. Right now the toss up is between Mazda 3 Sedan and the Toyota Corolla. Reliability is a huge concern especially with the first year of a refresh

I think the Sentra looks great. I am really not a fan of the stick on tablet For the infotainment screen. It always, in every car, looks like an afterthought. I understand the heads up principal where you are not lowering your eyes from the road however I reheated looks much more finished and thought out.

I heard Nissan in the 80s-90s were more reliable.. And the SX and Z cars could be daily-driven with a sportier edge.

I really hope sedans make a comeback. Even sporty hatchbacks have a soccer mom look. People who value utility can already find crossovers that offer everything a hatchback does for a smililar price.
I think it's a big mistake that manufacturers are abandoning the sporty small to mid-size sedan market. A lot of us value style, function and fun factor and don't want to pay Audi prices to get that. The Civic and the Mazda 3 are nice rides but still a bit on the slow side.

I see plenty of comments about CVT transmissions. Bottom line is manufacturers are going CVT to be competitive because they deliver superior MPG numbers that standard transmissions can't match. That's why the Honda Civic, Insight, Fit, CR-V and Toyota Corollas and Camrys all come with CVT transmissions. And don't think for a moment that the others don't have CVT transmission issues. Corollas for example have plenty of issues with CVTs but you don't hear as much about it because of how Toyota is reporting it. th-cam.com/video/mJB8LdMrM-w/w-d-xo.html
I owned a 2015 Sentra and now own a 2018 Altima and never had an issue with the transmissions. By the way my Altima (as did the Sentra) completely crushes my wife's 2013 Corolla on the MPG rating which doesn't have a CVT. I routinely get 38 to 40 MPG with the Altima on the highway (cruising at 80 mph) and 32 in the city for a combined 35.2 MPG according to my car's computer. That puts it right on par with the new 2020 Sentra MPG rating which is also spot on with the MPG I achieved with my 2015 Sentra. On my wife's Corolla the combined MPG is barely 30 MPG and the most ever achieved was 35 on the highway cruising at the speed limit (well below the 80 mph I routinely drive with my Altima). The Corolla, which is far less powerful and considerably lighter than my Altima, doesn't even come close to competing on the MPGs which is abysmal for a dinky little 1.8 liter 4.
The Sentra also now has what Nissan calls their zero gravity seats, which my Altima has, making the Sentra hands much better in comfort to any other vehicle in it's segment . Nissan has put the competition on notice and rightfully so.

With the all new Nissan Rogue 2022, small 1.5 Turbo engine, at 201 hp
    and with an improved CVT,
it would possibly give the Nissan Sentra the necessary upgrade needed
to compete, at last, with Civics / Corollas !

Aggressive nice looking but power is underrated! What's up with the HIGH RPM? Nissan should have place a 2.2L/2.3L engine inside the new Sentra.

Roads here in Newfoundland are too bad a shape in various places limiting where you can go in a car like this. Years ago there were more cars when the roads were better so you don't usually get a car here unless you can't afford an suv/pickup or it's a short run in a town with decent roads.

Gen X, yes Andrea and Zack.
The reason I think Nissan lost the plot with the Sentra was. The 80's and 90's Sentra's looked better and had a youthful look to it. Then they tried to make it for the same people as they ages, but forgot with age and a certain style, you still want it to look good. The timeless look, went to Uber me around looks, and who wants to be seen in an Uber me car, unless they being Uber'd.
Doing the go backwards and checking what I haven't watched.
Hope this ABS isn't like the Nissan NP300 we have in South Africa. The first time I drove it in the rain, I needed to do an emergency stop, and lucky for me I pumped the brakes and ABS came into play after a few pumps, or I would've had to old fashion manual ABS that vehicle. I do like testing how the ABS feels and interacts on different vehicles.
The space on the inside is claustrophobic in the back for me to say the least on some of the vehicles. The new shape here, just looks too much like an Uber or Rental, no appeal at all.
If the choice is there, Sentra or Kicks, I'd go with the Kicks as it doesn't have that now stigma of Uber or Rental.

The seats have to be better than previous versions. I had a Sentra as a rental while my Civic was at the body shop after an accident and the Sentra seats killed my back.
The have about 18 months to work with before a new redesigned Civic hits the market.

  • @k20z3keith7

Do not buy new Nissans. After 2005 the quality plummeted. Mostly because of the Renault partnership. Sure, you can make to 100k but get ready... A lot of ppl are commenting "my nissan is at 50k 60k blah blah blah no problems blah blah." That's good, for NOW. Just wait until the CVT goes at 100k and everything else a long with it. One comment said "blah blah Nissan CVTs are better than Honda's according to Car and Driver blah blah blah." That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Honda and Toyota CVTs are far more reliable and designed better. That "survey" was only based on ONE YEAR. Good luck getting 10 years... My point is Nissan used to be right next to Honda and Toyota. Now, I don't even mention them in conversation.
