The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy this holiday season helping a local man gift $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho. Secret Santa is a real person who wants to remain anonymous and hopes to bless as many individuals in our community as he can.
Melissa is one of the most selfless, caring and giving people you will ever meet. She was born with Muscular Dystrophy and has been in a wheelchair since she was 3 years old. She has never known a day without pain.
When Melissa was in grade school, a doctor told her she would not live to see the age of 15. He told her parents to take her home and love her for whatever time they had left. Forever defiant, she just celebrated her 40th birthday.
Melissa has been employed and making her own way as a licensed social worker since graduating college in 2005. She has faced many challenges and illnesses throughout her life but has never asked anyone for help, even if she needs it. She does not expect to get anything from anyone without earning it first but she never hesitates to help others no matter what it takes.
During the pandemic, she continued to work full-time at the hospital in Montpelier. As a social worker, she has dedicated her life to serving others including volunteer work in several capacities and organizations related to her profession.
Melissa was recognized by the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce as Distinguished Under 40 in 2012. Upon receiving the honor, Melissa told an interviewer that her disability grants her increased empathy and compassion to those she serves.
Melissa does not let her condition define her but instead channels her own experiences and disability as a means to understand the challenges others might face. She never feels sorry for herself no matter how ill she is and never expects or wants sympathy from anyone.
Scott, Melissa's husband, drives her to and from work every day in a wheelchair accessible van. They have owned the van for nine years and it has over 250,000 miles on it. The van needs major repairs but they still owe $9,000 on it and the repairs would cost more than the van itself.
Scott and Melissa have started a small flower shop next to their house so they can earn money for a new van.

I'm disabled. This one ripped me apart in the best possible way. The husband reminds me so strongly of my own - he clearly doesn't see his wife as just her disability, knows she's not a burden but a gift. One of the first things he thought of was removing the front seat so she could sit alongside him. Bless the both of them and thank you to the Secret Santa. 🎅

Absolutely love this story. As a wheelchair user myself and van owner, this hit home, these vans last about 10 yrs and are expensive to replace especially if you are able to drive. My van with electronics for me to drive is ruffly 100,000 grand. 1 accident you're F'ed and this happened to me. Independence isn't cheap, and Secret Santa thanks for realizing this couples needs. All the best.
Does your government not provide these for those who need them? In total shock the US don’t do this or have a mobility scheme for anyone with mobility issues!

First off, she is amazing and an inspiration, its a no brainer why someone wouldnt nominate her and rightly so. Her husband though is also an amazing person, he clearly loves and supports Melissa, and these gifts really are game changers for them. Not only removing monthly payments, but the stress of having to buy another van. SS, Nate and Team you all really do pick the right people and the right gifts to make such a difference. As someone who works with people with differing abilities, this is beyond generous! Her chair alone is probably $10,000, seriously, power chairs are VERY expensive. These families have very different expenses than the average family. Thank you Secret Santa for thinking of this well deserving family. Also, thank you for inspiring me every Christmas (in IL) to give, give, give! It fills my heart so much more to give than to get presents! At 19 my best friend lost his battle with MD . Was diagnosed at 8 , in a wheelchair at 9 . He was so full of life and so positive . She Reminds me of my boy Eddie ... 😭😭😭😭 39 and I’m literally balling like a flipping baby . 20 years this year and I think about him everyday .

It's truly beautiful to watch stress disappear in an instant. Obviously that doesn't solve everything but it fixes the biggest point of stress in their lives. It's a real image of Christmas, God blessing people through his very Secret Santa.
Such a tear jerker, and such a deserving couple. Just seeing the cheque the first thing hubby says “oh, we can pay off the van” the first thought to enter his mind. The relief and shock seeing the key in the box was such a joy and tearful to watch. Secret Santa has given away many cars, but this has to be the most deserving and emotional one of all. Because it’s such a specialised van it’s not like you can just get one at the drop of a hat, plus the expense of these vans. I’m sure this will be a massive relief for them having the loan paid plus a new van, no more transportation worries. Being wheelchair accessible is a whole lot different to the usual cars. ❤️

For someone who has been dealt quite a difficult hand in life, she chose a career to serve. To serve others in spite of what personal hardships she may have... What an amazing woman. And the husband... The incredible and overwhelming love the husband has for his wife is so palpable. It makes you believe that true unconditional love exists. He didn't have to do much but his actions show it. The way he said Merry Christmas to his wife showed how much he wanted her to be happy and cared for. May they continue to be blessed.
