Killin brother. The breadth of your skill and knowledge is really something. Ernest ranglin! I remember being at a resort in Jamaica, a million years ago and the dude in the function band every night which was really just a quartet was absolutely burning and I asked the bartender “who is that guitar player” and he was like, “oh mon- dat’s Ernie Ranglin! he’s the best guitar player on dee whole island, mon.” His words-said in exactly that way. He was a super sweet dude too. I was a fan ever since and scarfed up any ernest ranglin recordings i could find.
oh man, that's amazing!! What a great way to discover that man's amazing style! I was lucky to see him playing a jazz festival way back in the early 2000's and his whole relaxed vibe was just something to behold! Thanks for the kind words man, I really appreciate it 🍻
This is the best video outlining this soul/blues funk style. Double stops, triads, chromatic approach, the cage system. I use prob half these ideas and processes, but this has sort of filled the gaps! A few years ago I wouldn’t have been able to follow and process it so fast. Cause I know neck and these triads I can add it in. Can’t thank you enough!!
Hey, Alex. Another great lesson, in yet another great guitar "sub-genre" -- the "Motown Sound". Appreciate your emphasizing how those genre boundaries are highly porous, and the basic functional harmonies of Western music can make the classic licks from one genre, sound nice and fresh in another. (And Santa, if you're listening, all I want for Christmas is a nice old telecaster.) Rock on!

I'm an old bassist, trying to improve my guitar skills. This video is very helpful and appreciated, but I need to correct the terminology. So, technically, what you're calling "II major", is actually the secondary dominant: "V of V". I may be pedantic, but you're a teacher.😊
That’s right Gary, and that’s what I do call it also, and the way I’m always thinking about it.. hence my use of dominant chord tonality over that chord. And in fact if you go to the 22 minute mark of the video I talk about that very thing.. the V of V etc 👍🏻
Never stop learning it's like soulful good for food for you know like a rhyme for a song and melody with pretty additional notes to pretty it up but not to busy but correct thankyou

Yes indeed!.. I usually make my own backing tracks but loved this one so much I just had to use it! Funnily enough they played my hometown last Friday night and invited me up on stage to play a song with them.. was a fantastic night!

You’re correct. Alex makes the JazzMaster sing! So many guys will tell you the JazzMaster sounds “thin & weak”, but Alex shows us that it has a rich, beautiful tone when played properly. Further removing any doubt, that TONE comes directly from the fingers! Yes, the guitar has a little to do with it, but the majority of tone comes from the players fingers and touch. No doubt about it! I only wish I could get that across to newbies just learning to play! Kids coming in with $3,000 guitars, wondering why they don’t sound like the artist the guitar is named after! 🙄. PS*. Very well done Alex!

I love this kind of stuff and what it evolved into in the 70's with guitarists like Teenie Hodges of Hi Records or Curtis Mayfield. Another big name from the 60's is Bobby Womack

You’re correct. Alex makes the JazzMaster sing!
So many guys will tell you the JazzMaster sounds “thin & weak”, but Alex shows us that it has a rich, beautiful tone when played properly.
Further removing any doubt, that TONE comes directly from the fingers! Yes, the guitar has a little to do with it, but the majority of tone comes from the players fingers and touch. No doubt about it!
I only wish I could get that across to newbies just learning to play! Kids coming in with $3,000 guitars, wondering why they don’t sound like the artist the guitar is named after! 🙄.

I love this kind of stuff and what it evolved into in the 70's with guitarists like Teenie Hodges of Hi Records or Curtis Mayfield. Another big name from the 60's is Bobby Womack
