@@conlanding I wasn't aware of that. I remember thinking how much better to have a broadcaster who can diagram the play being called. Dan Dierdorf was surprisingly adept at reading it. He was an OL. They must be smart. I hate it when all they do is say who has the football. It's so much more complicated than that. I wish they could outline the offense.
I was there and was my first and only game at Arrowhead! To this day all I hear in my mind is TOUCHDOWN CHRISTIAN OKOYE!!! Man it was soooo fricken loud and was easily my best sports experience ever! GO CHIEFS!!!!
GOCheifs, just want to say Thank you for that bit of info. I did not know Okoye scored in this game, nor did I know it was his last as a Chief. Loved the Nigerian Nightmare!
Dan Reeves' last game as the Broncos head coach which ended in disaster and the boldest move Pat Bowlen ever made as the Broncos owner is that he fired Dan Reeves after this disastrous season finale in Kansas City.
Dan Reeves accomplished a lot during his time as head coach and basically GM of the Broncos, but man did he ever earn his demise after this season. They went 12-4 in 1991, losing 10-7 in the AFC Championship at Buffalo. Their defense under Wade Phillips was solid, but it was very obvious that Elway needed help on offense, specifically at wide receiver and offensive line. Did Reeves try to address that in the offseason? Not at all. Also, veteran backup QB Gary Kubiak retired and you would think the logical thing to do would be to find another veteran backup to replace him with. But no, instead he gave a big middle finger to Elway and drafted Tommy Maddox in the 1st round with a solid OT in John Fina and a playmaking WR in Carl Pickens still on the board. Even if Maddox was the best player available (which he wasn't), why on earth would you draft a QB in the 1st round when you have already have your franchise QB in his prime with plenty of years left in him? Apparently Reeves was ready to run a future Hall of Famer out of town. Imagine if Twitter and other social media had existed back then. So the season started out well going 7-3, but Elway got hurt in that 10th game playing behind a bad offensive line. Maddox starts the following week in LA against a dysfunctional Raiders team, but he was absolutely lost and the Broncos got shutout 23-0. They go on to lose the next 3 games that Elway was inactive, which made the last 2 games of the season must wins and Elway had to come back and play while still banged up, which led to this disaster of a game. Realistically with a decent, experienced backup QB like Steve DeBerg, who was available that offseason, they could have gone 2-2 in that 4 game stretch, keeping them in good playoff position and they wouldn't have had to rush Elway back. Good thing Pat Bowlen realized that Reeves had lost his grip on how to run a football team and canned him after this game. I realize that very few people (if any) out there care about this, but I wanted to get this rant off my chest because every time I'm reminded of this season it pisses me off. I know it's pretty unlikely that they would have won the Super Bowl, but they could have made a decent playoff run, similar to what happened in 2006 when inexplicably bad coaching/GM moves derailed that team's chances as well.
Indeed, Ryan. I was only ten at the time, and even I was smart enough to see that Reeves should have gone with O-Line or receiver help. He and Elway never did see eye-to-eye, and the '91-'92 offseason was the last straw.
Yeah, I'm with you on that. In general, ownership shouldn't meddle, but when you have a pretty bad conflict between your franchise QB and the head coach, who also essentially holds the title of GM, you have to get involved at some point.
It's part of why I hate when people say that Brady and Montana are the best because of rings. Not to take anything away from Brady or Montana (who are both amazing) but neither one of them would have won a super bowl playing for Reeves with this Broncos team in the 80s and I highly doubt either of them would have got to 3 super bowls. Yeah I can't even imagine the social media reaction to drafting a QB in the first round when you have a franchise QB in the prime of his career. Could you imagine if the Packers drafted a QB in round one with Rodgers in his prime? People would lose their minds.
Ryan Kliewer I was 13. I remember this season so well. First season I wad old enough to watch all the games, and follow the sportspage myself. I was so happy Elway and Co. got to get a sort of redemption in '98.
They first had replay from 1986 to 1991, and then the owners voted not to continue it before the 1992 season. It was not brought back until 1999. So no, there was no replay review at the time.
Was he filling in for the injured place kicker? Quite often, the backup kicker is the punter and vice versa. I remember Nick Lowery punting a few times when the KC punter got injured; I don't remember the results as being very auspicious.
@@UlricSchnellock The Broncos kicker during this time was David Treadwell. He was a great kicker, but notorious for having a weak leg (despite his accuracy, I believe his career long FG was only 49 yards). The Broncos opted to carry TWO kickers during this season by also keeping Brad Daluiso as well, the reason being that Treadwell could NEVER generate any touchbacks on his kickoffs. Thus Daluiso was the kickoff "guy" (wanna say all but about 10 or so of his kickoffs were for touchbacks during this season), and he also was the "long field goal guy" (even though he only was brought on to try one "long" field goal of over 50 yards--but he made it). Don't know if it was worth the roster spot being filled by the extra kicker or not. There's your silly Broncos history lesson LOL.
From the get go with Schottenheimer I noticed even that first season he'd turned things around to where the Chiefs weren't just getting blown out but staying competitive the entire game. I really liked Marty but the poor man had a black cloud constantly over him during post-season, some of it very fluky, some of it his own fault. My Dad and I would tune in the game on tv and then listen in to my favorite two Chiefs hosts at this time on the radio-a young Kevin Harlon and Len Dawson. It was a great time in high school for me.
As a Browns fan it’s heartwarming to see your love for Marty. Also as a Browns fan I feel the need to tell you to thank the late and wretched owner of the Browns, Art Model. He was the moron who ran Marty out of Cleveland after he worked miracles to get the Browns to the playoffs for the 4th straight season in 1988. He did it with 4 QB’s after Bernie was injured. I’ve always felt that Model firing Marty was the first domino to fall that lead to the move of the Browns to Baltimore. Ravens fans have Modell to thank for that.
What the hell is up with all the dropped balls/fumbles? Bad ball possession on the goal line fumble by KC, but all day there were drops by both sides. Were the balls slippery or did “possession” receivers not exist yet lol
Enberg seemed to lose his grip on reality in this game 'The league will have to address the issue of crowd noise because it's unfair to the opposing offense' Like, that's the whole point Dick....

Christian Okoye's Last rush as a Chief, it was a touchdown and it broke Abner Haynes rushing TD record with his 40th.
I just finished watching it because of the blow out they cut away from Okoye's TD.

That was quite a thumping! Defense produced 21 of the Chiefs 42 points.

That was a very athletic interception return.

1:58:49 the ball was out before knee hit ground. enberg says good call wtf? was replay not around back then?
