- General’s Layout Pencil 555 is an extra smooth, black, thick graphite pencil used to add intense blacks and shading in detail graphite drawings. Since 1889, General Pencil has been making pencils in the USA with the highest quality sustained yield cedar wood.
In this tutorial, Molly shows you how she uses this fun new pencil to create more depth and darkness in your Zentangle art.
The Zentangle mini layout pencil is available here: zentangle.com/... (only available to Certified Zentangle Teachers at this time. You must be logged into your Zentangle account)

I have this pencil and have used it for some of my tiles! It's wonderful. I agree about the texture of it - smooth and soft. Thank you for this video, Molly!
I’d really really love Maria to revisit that tile and do a class on it step by step because it’s so intricate and fun .. hopefully for the next pp ?!?
Looking forward to trying the 555 layout !
WOW...what a difference! I love the drama of the darker pencil, so beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm so glad you are adding this to your Zentangle tool box. Like you, I enjoy the shading process alot! I yearned to take my art to the next level and wanted to reduce the shine with HB graphite. Some time ago, I ended up with the Pitt Graphite Matt pencils. I am able to get richer tonal values, and the dark tonal values I just couldn't achieve with an HB pencil. Again like you, I darken the outer edges of my shaded areas, and the Pitt Graphite Matt pencils give me the dark tonal values without the shine. We seem to be kindred spirits as I can spend hours shading and fussing on the details. It is my favorite part of the process!
The new pencil adds a lot of depth. Nice.
Love the tutorial! Thank you Molly!
Result is dramatic, indeed!
I’d only recommend using sone fixative spray afterwards to keep the graphite from staining other tiles and fingers.
Already got mine and have been enjoying using it! I love the drama!
Wow, Molly! Amazing possibilities with this new pencil! Beautiful presentation! Any chance of a quick session on that lovely Betweed tile? Love it!!
Thank you for naming the pattern Nancy! Yes, I’d love to do that one as well
Wow! The transformation of Maria's tile is amazing. Very Steampunk. Very....what word can i use?...sculpted? That is the best word I can find. Thanks for sharing this with us Molly.
I need to add this to my “toolkit”! 😂❤
Curious @Molly have you ever tried liquid graphite? I had it on my wish list of art supplies for a future project and my husband bought it as a gift for me. I haven't used it yet but I wonder how it would work on tangles.
What is the omega puzzle tangle that makes the “snake body” called on the 2nd tile that you’re shading?
This is something I've been longing for! Just one question: does the new pencil still have the silver sheen that the standard graphite has? Sometimes, I've been longing for a matte black. But most of all, something black enough not to make my black penstrokes (the drama) grey, when it's not something I've planned.
Also, I really wish we could see how the tile actually look. The same goes for when you are using the white charcoal - the camera adds drama and makes the black blacker and the white whiter. That makes it hard for us to see what it really looks like when you blend. I love shading, but sometimes I make a grey mess out of my beautiful tile! (Luckily, there is this little cheat called an eraser, with a really good eraser you can rescue your tile and make another try. Or, you can clean the edges a bit, if needed, with one of those kneadable erasers)
Faber-Castell do a series of pencils called Pitt Graphite Matt. I have one in 12B. I really like those pencils if you wanted to try one of those for yourself. I’m about to buy a layout pencil now as well 😂
I've ordered five, and a bunch of project packs and some other things. 😂 The shipping to Sweden is ridiculous, even if it takes forever to get your order, so when I order, I order a lot! 😂 I mean, I can't order one layout pencil and spend over $50 on shipping.
@@Petra-Lassen So true. That would be a bit excessive 😂
