  • Connecting, joining paths in Illustrator on the iPad. To make a true join without the extra segment Illustrator will add, make sure to align your anchor points perfectly. This video will show you how using paths drawn with the Pen tool. Works with any path, Pencil paths too.
    One extra, not demonstrated in video: You can align 2 endpoints using the align panel - select 2 endpoints using the Direct Selection tool first, then align horizontally and then vertically before joining them as shown in video.

    Thanks so much for the video, just wanted to let you know that if you select 2 anchor points and then click on the align tool and center them up vertically and horizontally it does the same thing only way quicker

      That's a great tip, thanks for adding that! You might use my smart guides alignment when you don't want the path to change by moving its endpoint.

    Thanks for this, your instructions are so clear and concise. I was able to join the paths on my ipad illustrator. But for some reason, when I try to do the same after using mirror of an image and try to join the paths at the lower center point, it joins the paths but it also joins from that center to the first starting point. But this doesn’t happen when I join 2 paths that aren’t mirrored. What am I doing wrong?

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it helped! "but it also joins from that center to the first starting point" - are you selecting only the 2 end points you want to join first (with direct selection)? If it is joining points you don't intend, they might be part of the current selection.

    Super great video! One issue I’m running in to is it’s not allowing me to join lines when i mirror the first half of the cad on to the other. Any tips? iPad btw

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using a mirror repeat?(rather than just flipping) That creates a repeat object and you have to expand it in order to edit the paths from one side to the other. Object Menu > Expand

    Great tutorial. Can I join two vectors into a “T”? As in joining one to the middle of the other vector. Or can I only join two end points?

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't do the "T" thing. Only join endpoints. One anchor point can't have multiple paths. Thanks for commenting!

  • @dfynt4life
    @dfynt4life 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can you show how to connect the end of a line to the center of another. To make like a T shape. I’m trying to trace objects and have lines within the drawing that are part of the “outline” if that makes sense lol

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can’t connect the endpoint of a path to the middle of another path (like a T) that’s not how paths and points work in illustrator. You can make a T but the paths won’t be connected, if that makes sense. But, you can connect a single endpoint to another endpoint. I hope that helps!

    Hiya
    This video is great!
    I’m wondering if you could help
    I’m having a lot of trouble deselecting the path tool, it just keeps adding new paths whenever I try to click off it. I’ve tried double tapping the barrel and it doesn’t work, maybe my apple pen is too old. Do you have any idea of how else I can deselect, it’s doing my head in.
    Would be very grateful for your help
    Thanks
    Bethany

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you have the preferences set for double-tapping, but yes, it only works with the new version of the Pencil (with the flat edge). Otherwise, you need to switch to a Selection tool and deselect the path you are currently drawing with the Pen or Pencil tool by clicking in an empty space with a Selection tool. You can choose a selection tool from the tool panel, or if you have a keyboard paired, you can use the keyboard shortcuts: V=Selection, A=Direct Selection, Command/Ctrl=Toggle to last-used selection tool temporarily.

    HELLO! I'm stuck on drawing from a completed pen path. AKA I thought I finished the design but need to continue drawing using the pen tool from an anchor point in the middle of it. How is this done?
    Secondly, How do I join an anchor point from a closed shape to a separate line? The join end paths button will only do this with open paths from what I've gathered.
    Thank you!

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like, in both cases, you want to join on or continue drawing from an anchor point that is not an endpoint. Illustrator doesn't work this way - you can only add on or join to endpoints, not the points running along a path. I hope that helps! You can position multiple paths and shapes and give them the same stroke weight or fill, so they look like they are a whole, and then group them.

    Is there a way you can snap to points on the iPad app?

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not like on the desktop, but if you go to the precision menu and turn on snapping, then it's like smart guides, so points can have that magnetic snap too.

    I’m struggling to do this with the blob brush!!

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is for Pen tool or Pencil tool paths. Blob brush paths are outlined shapes, not a single line with an anchor point on either end. For blob brush shapes, you can move them to where they overlap and use the shapebuilder tool to merge them together. Hope that helps!

    • @jorgilusty

      @@LauraCoyle thanks. do you have there a tutorial for filling surfaces that are NOT surrounded by a closed object (for AI iPad)? is it possible anyway on the iPad?
      I'd like to learn to draw like this: th-cam.com/video/671fvu96fGw/w-d-xo.html
      without using the 3d function because later on it would be rather complicated organic shape (object design)

    • @LauraCoyle
      @LauraCoyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@createinside4613 In Illustrator (iPad or desktop) the way to create something like this glue gun is to treat every surface as a shape. Each change in surface is a shape with a fill (gradient or solid) with the stroke of the path set to none. Then treat your lines separately by duplicating shapes and changing the fill setting to none and the stroke to a line weight. This way, one path can be the outline of the whole glue gun, another non-closed path can be a detail line on the handle etc., and the surfaces are shapes without lines around them.
