I’m currently re-watching every episode of Cheers and even when I’m watching 3 or 4 episodes in a row, I can’t bring myself to skip the intro even once. One of the all time TV theme classics. I look forward to learning to play it in the AM with the help of this video.

Gave me shivers. Your voice is beautiful man. I too loved this song as a kid. I used to beg my parents to stay up late enough to hear the opening song. I even recorded it on a mini cassette recorder I got from a garage sale, just so I could replay it to myself. Just a song I have always loved. My daughter is now learning clarinet. I play piano, and I told her I will learn this if she learns the clarinet part. Would be the joy of my life. 🙂 Thank you for this. I subscribed. I need you to teach me more. Elton John please!!! 😉

You are such a great teacher! I have been loving all your posts on Patreon (they so often make me laugh, give me company in sadness or cheer me up). And now I'm so thrilled to learn this song (that nails what we all feel in even the most banal day to day interactions with each other--interactions we are currently robbed of...). And you have taught it the way it really sounds in my ear. People are always posting or playing "fake book" kinds of chords to familiar songs that kind of sound like the original but they dumb it down--not because it's too hard to teach but because they don't take the time to really listen to the original and catch a few touches of complexity. It helps me as a composer and performer to learn the little nuances of what the songs I love are really doing musically. I learn a ton. So I really appreciated your taking the time to figure this song out and sharing it with us. AND going through the music theory at the end of the song. Thank you so much! I'm already annoying my family by playing it over and over again. :-)

I literally LOL’d at “we’re not there yet”… this song is so full of moments that bring joy, which sums up Cheers overall. As an occasional hacker of the ivories thank you so much; I can’t wait to give this a go!
sidebar: I introduced my wife to the show recently (she knew - and loved - Frasier, so that was my “way in”). Some of the fashion is of its time, but the show itself has aged beautifully and is still both funny and relevant. And, thanks to the prescient decision to record on film, the HD presentation looks great even in 2024.

This is the best, fantastic player and singer, but a great teacher too. Really happy ive found this, im 43, and bought a piano when we were forced into a second lockdown(UK), to stop me going insane.
This video has taught me loads. Really appreciate you naming the keys of each chords because i have those funny letter stickers on my keys, and it really helps.
If i was aloud to get lessons i would, but we're not aloud to do anything, so i loving these videos.
Ive subscribed and im thinking of songs i would love you to do.

I do a weekly livestream here on this channel - playing songs on a couple different instruments every Wednesday at 9p central time (-6 gmt) which is a little late where you are but I do archive the shows. Gonna start doing a once a month on Sunday mornings for the Europe contigency. Best wishes and continued success and thanks again for taking the time to write!

I randomly discovered you while looking for piano tutorials and I must say, this video is amazing! You're such a fun and engaging teacher. Breaking the song down, talking through it and even offering some of your own reflections on the tricks and intent of the songwriter. And the follow up video where you play the whole thing is just *chef's kiss*. This lesson has given me the confidence that I can learn this song and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future!

@@KorbyLenker by way of a little update... last night, and after returning from a fairly emotional two week trip to see old friends, I decided to finally sit down and learn this. I see I've reached the "crying at the piano while playing 80s sitcom theme tunes" stage of my life, haha. And thanks for your part in that, it's not at all unpleasant. Honestly, I think this is the fastest I've ever picked up a song... I'm less than 24 hours in and I feel like I'm playing some parts quite convincingly already. Transitioning perfectly between sections is still an issue, but I just have to get the muscle memory down.
I know it's not true to the original, but I've added a grace into G in that E-flat chord on "...knows your NAME... and they're always glad you..." and also on the F chord at the beginning of the walk up to A. I like it though, I think the bluesy light-heartedness it adds changes the tone very slightly and reminds me a lot of spending time with old friends: like you're feeling the years rushing by, but you're putting that to the back of your mind for a while; for now, you're having a good time and letting your hair down a bit (what's left of it).
Anyway, I'm having an absolute blast learning this and would like to echo everything I said a year ago...

At one point I had learned the entire song using basic chord shapes, and mostly by ear. I had stopped playing this song for many years and had forgotten it. The other day, while fooling around on the keyboard I stumbled on the the opening chord(That iconic Bb). Thank you so much for making the fun of relearning this tune so easy! This was an awesome supplement that I needed, and I love the in-depth music theory lesson at the end! "Cheers!"(Bad pun)

Man, you're the best guy for this Cheers tutorial! You fit the mold. And you get it! For example what you said at 6:17. That the chord change makes you feel "sad for a second". Wow, genius way to describe it. And I totally agree with the memories too.
In fact, I have a special memory of the song. Back in '92 when my wife and I were on our honeymoon at Epcot, I'll never forget us walking through a mezzanine and a nice gentleman was playing Cheers on piano. What an impression that made on me then! I was like wow, he's playing Cheers! I think about that every time I hear the song.
So anyway, thanks for your tutorial. I'm gonna surprise my family by learning it in the coming days.
And now you'll be the second nice gentleman I think about when, this time, I PLAY the song. 😄
