Everyone who is black are not african american espeacially in louisiana and gulf coast states. Many people of color were already in america before the slave trade and are native to america. Christopher columbus wrote in his journal that there were a mix of dark skinned people when he arrived, from some with tattoos in their faces and even wearing gold. We been wearing gold teeth and jewelry, plus having tattoos even in our face
Uptown Rob facts
agreed, i will like to add that Columbus was given a drawn map to America from a village in Africa, and sent someone to guide him there.
Really doesn't matter who was or wasn't here, we must get rid of liberalism it doesn't please GOD!!
Uptown Rob Absolutely. “Black is too vague” that’s like calling white people “Caucasian” a lot of them aren’t. There’s Serbian, Nordic, etc. I think our history is so diluted. (American)

Thank you for taking care of me and my family. Im a latino and you guys welcomed me as one of your own. Thank you for the humbleness. Thank you for making such an educational video! I wanted to learn more about Mardi Gras and New Orleans before I come to visit the week of Mardi Gras, and you gave me so many different things to do more research into! Can’t wait to see your city and enjoy all that I can!
I was raised in Mardi Gras parades and balls and here are a couple facts that can go deeper into it. 1. beads = symbolic Catholic rosary beads for counting prayers 2. raising hands saying throw me something to masked float riders = asking one of the gods for a blessing. 3. Raising Shirts= sacrifice of morality for a blessing
The parade float custom part is straight up wickedness especially in Brazil as they go deeper with Hedonism(angel wings/demons/nakedness). I stopped celebrating and going to Mardi Gras bc that is a whole celebration to mock the one true God of the Israelites which most of New Orleans ppl are. Peep how many of our ppl make it bigtime from that lil city and got ppl like Beyonce and Drake jocking our style. No coincidence.

I live in Louisiana, and I didnt know about this Indian thing. Excellent doc!
Dam brother I gotta salute u big time I'm just a Mexican from El Paso Texas but I'ma huge fan of y'all music n cultures ..this video really explains alot.. Us Hispanics also celebrate similar festivities like the cake wit the baby in it we call it la rosca
Just learned something reading your comment. Never knew Mexicans shared that close of similarities to us. Guess that explains why I gravitate towards Mexicans. Aye if you are ever in the Gulf Coast area take your time to checkout the history and background, as well as our good food to ta heard me!
That's what I noticed too! The baby in the cake. That's so cool.
Et ils sont où les Barcelonnettes de Mexico ???
I'm creole a noticed ricans have la rosca too. Also the Zydeco music we invented uses Accordions like polka music.
I really regret that I didnt get to explore all of this when I lived there a few years ago. That bad relationship robbed me of the experience that time around. I visit when I take my daughter to see her dad in the summer. 💜💚💛

Thank you for giving me clear & precise understanding of Mardi Gras. Beautiful!!
I’m 39 years old and this will be my first time going. Will you be there this year?
Serves as a reminder “We are still here” I understand why WE as Black people say that. Bc we can relate to a common struggle. But how is it that we celebrate through a culture/event that was not ours to begin with? I mean Katrina for instance. Look at what happened to Black People. Displacement. Lack of response. Lack of Restoration leading to Gentrification etc. So are WE here physically or spiritually or symbolically? I mean, where we celebrate is not OURS anymore. I’m glad this brother took tome to brake the history down. Y’all remember it was explained due to racism WE had to form OUR own Krews/social clubs for US bc the way the white folks in the same “culture/event, treated Black people. It was started by a white French Canadian at a time when Black people were enslaved, right. I find it hard to believe anything (event) created in those time intended and or included Black people. I know it’s huge right now and Black people are in the mix, but, we are in the mix of a lot of created holidays etc. that we shouldn’t be a part of or at least research it. Finally, there are many many many traditions that African/Black/indigenous people created for THEMSELVES that are powerful and worth while and OURS. And it’s ok to embrace them.
Thank you. The celebration always look fun but I always had questions. Tennessee native born and raised and I still haven't been to Mardi Gras.
Considering this information , is it black face for the white people to wear the Zulu makeup considering that they could wear masks at the time or would you say it isn’t blackface ?
I loved this video! Very informative. I just started working at a Mardi Gras themed restaurant so I’ve been interested in the culture & food!
Please stop watching non historically accurate presentations on history. Mardi Gras is a pagen holiday later adopted by the Christian church for their own purposes. It had nothing to do with the French. Francia didn't exist yet. You can't take one tiny part of its history in N.O. and try to paint the entire celebration as that. A more appropriate video here would be Mardi Gras as adapted in early America and specifically New Orleans. But it has nothing to do with the real history.
@@tylermauk8561 Yes france wasn't unified until later, this is a video about how we do it
@@tylermauk8561 Every major holiday basically has pagen roots except Hanukkah, days to honor civil rights leaders and each countries respective independence days.
cool vid thanks for making it and sharing
The Presbytere has a great Mardi Gras exhibit. The Zulu Ball is defintley a highlight for black folk. Rex and Comas and the Meeting of the Courts is an event I want to attend one day.
People always get Carnival and Mardi Gras mixed up. It is Carnival season starting at twelfth night, which is Janvier 6th and runs all the way until the last day of carnival which is called Mardi Gras! No it’s not Mardi Gras day or Mardi Gras season. If you think about it, it’s like saying Fat Tuesday day or Fat Tuesday season which sounds stupid and grammatically incorrect.
Thank you for having common sense! This common mistake got me looking up the difference between the two and there isn't any, mardi gras is apart of carnival.
Mardi Gras season also starts on 12th night January 6th its literally called 12th night.
@@roybabineaux5353 you mean Carnival season, mardi-gras is a day.
@@nathanlumiere3775 no I mean Mardi Gras season we don't call it carnival season yes Mardi Gras is one day, but the balls and Mardi Gras krewes put the parades on until Mardi Gras this includes MLK parades and the chicken run parades. I never really heard it called carnival season, but then again I'm not from New Orleans I'm from the east part of Louisiana Lake Charles to be exact.
Mardi Gras day has a few parades. But the weekend before MG is the biggest parade weekend. My favorite is Krewe of Tucks. Because I’m a member of the Krewe.

Awesome Presentation. Some Stuff I Didn't know. Well done.
As someone who grew up celebrating mardi gras in Louisiana, I would suggest that if you plan to go to a parade, while the ones in New Orleans are by far the most extravagant, you're more likely to get trampled because of the huge crowds. New Orleans is an amazing place culturally but the crime rate is pretty high. Its not the safest place. If you still want to get a fun parade experience, try going to a parade in downtown baton rouge or in nearby areas. Its much safer and still really fun
The TV-Show "Treme" brought me here, because I got curious about the New Orleans culture. Regards from Germany!

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT FAT TUESDAY/ MARDI GRAS!!!

Correction: New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration is is the largest in the USA, not the largest in the world. That honor goes to Rio de Janeiro. I believe New Orleans comes in third.
Good man telling tourists to go a few days before it starts or stay a few days after to get the real experience....trying to get into one of the balls would be the beads on top 😂🖤

Great history of Mardi Gras ,but Mardi Gras Indians name was given by white people and the original name for us was stripped from our culture during slavery so we Indians now call our selves Black Masking Injuns the real name for the “ Mardi Gras Indians “ which doesn’t show the way people have been thought of by whites and the way they thought our tradition was replicated from Native Americans here in New Orleans
YAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSS!! EXCELLENT!!!!

I never knew about the "Flag Boy" thank you for educating us! There is so much history that is not taught in public schools. :(
Thank you for going into black culture intertwined with Mardi Gras. Bro stop saying Native American. Aboriginal, Indigenous, and Native are 3 different terms that have 3 different significant meanings.
Aboriginal and indigenous are synonymous words.
Mardi Gras... Last day where you can eat meat... Then you will have to eat only vegetables, fish, fruits until Easter.... (french religious tradition)
I remember I used to start sayn to myself when I was like 12 yrs old "ima stop wyldin for cups", only to come home with like a hunnid" lol.-Wild tchoupotulis- good ole days
4:40 I was dating a Princess for the Endymion parade in 2003ish. They threw a huge party in the Superdome where the parade ended up. Earth, Wind, and Fire played I think. I was so out of my league.
So.....wait. Are the masked Indians saying that they were native people like in the same capacity as the original Native Americans were (Aztecs, Iriquois, Cherokee, etc) or are they saying that they lived in Louisiana like pre-Louisiana Purchase before it was technically part of America? My ancestors are French Acadian and lived in Louisianna (Lafayette & Iberia Parish) and were there long before the Americans took over and owned that territory and I also know there were a lot of Haitian's that were also living there at the same time due to the Haitian Revolution. Being that the French controlled Canada and also Haiti, when the British took over Canada a lot of the French Acadians were sent to France's new territory in Louisiana, also around that same time periord the Haitian Revolution took place and a lot of the captured soldiers were also sent to the Louisiana territory during the same time period. So are the masked Indians saying that they were "Indiginous" in the sense that they lived in that land prior to the Americans taking over or are they saying that they were actually living there even before the Spanish or the French claimed the land?
Dylan Cummings yes some of us are native and some of us are Africans who were already here! I dunno why we think just white folks had boats
The so-called Cherokee were from the east coast. They wore turbans and look similar to Muslims. The name Cherokee itself didn't exist until late 1700s
Some were Native but, many escaped slavery with the help of Natives who embraced them as family... masking is also a way to pay homage to those who helped us!
@@dannyashby5663 Your confused the Hollywood fame "Native Americans" were mostly out west. The first people Europeans seen in America were black and look similar to people in Africa
@@BattleTruth I simply mean natives of this area. I didn't say Native Americans... just Natives. Like in the true sense of the word native. But, you are absolutely correct most civilizations (including the ones "out west") have their origins in Africa. Because Africans had already explored the world. Some staying here, i.e. the Toltecs. I am a Native of New Orleans because it's where I'm from not because I picked up Hollywoood's version of the word.

The soul of n America
I know not related to the video, but it is unknown how many wise men there were, all we know is that they brought 3 gifts. There could have been 50 of them but they only brought three gifts
You're right, there's NOTHING written in ANY "records" saying there were THREE wise men, only WISE men bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and mryyh which doesn't necessarily mean that there was THREE MEN bringing one of each gift!
They should do a video about partners n crime that rap duo from new Orleans
Truth is in fact..Its a very clever way to get people to worship and praise the Greek gods. Taunting people with trinkets or food to get them screaming and waving there hands in the air in front of statues on floats depicting Greek gods. False idols .
Another way to get thousands of people to praise and worship false idols. So sad. I pray my people wake up. Repent now its never too late

It’s true that the Saturnalia theory hasn’t been accepted as fact, yet, but it makes a lot of sense. Most catholic holidays are appropriated from pre-Christian European religions. They simply copied them a means of wiping out the existing culture and drawing followers under their wing.
I noticed that you mentioned New Orleans and Brazil for Mardi Gras but you didn't mention Trinidad even before Brazil you forgot Trinidad Carnival Trinidad was one of the original of this Festival put on Parade
