Have followed the reds for 55years and we have had some great centre backs ,Virgil is the best I have ever seen .
The one quality that makes Van Djik ahead of other centre backs around the world is he brings out the best of all the defenders that plays around him. He organised the defence really well. If you want to know how good is he, just watch every time he clears the ball in the air, it will always be a pass to a Liverpool player. Rarely see any other defender does it as frequent as Van Djik

Ikr, I'm a defender, i only defend because of my height, i have tall legs and my body is weak so instead of contending with others using my body, i use my legs. I find defense boring but seeing van dijk totally changed my opinion

@@mrtheonexx8749 I have seen millions of times that mediocre forwards go pass him easily, plus his positioning is awful, PLUS he's probably the worst on offside traps, his ass is on the goalkeepers face all the time allowing the midfielders pass easily to forwards. Van Dijk dominates all of that at perfection, he is one of the most complete CB ever. Either way, you cant compare this two players because they don't have the same role, Ramos is a man-marking defender(though he's bad at it) and Van dijk is a sweeper/positional defender

He's got like the most yellow and red cards in laliga history I think, a big reason enough that shows he is no legendary defender. Compare that to maldini, puyol, baresi, nesta, van dijk, sammer, cannavaro, thuram, ferdinand, ayala, stam, koeman etc they practically dont have red cards, very few. Ramos got thousands. That shows that he has difficulties to defend and therefore he has to tackle the wrong way, the other players i mentioned were incredible at reading the game and tackle at the right moment and position them selves well. Van dijk may have not been a famous player before, but what he has shown in 2 seasons places him as a legendary defender already, Van Dijk is one of the greatest defenders Ive ever seen. Ramos is an overrated player thanks to the spanish media that influences a lot in world football.

He might score goals but that doesn’t makes him a better defender. Well If that’s true that people say that Ramos is better that’s because Ramos has more media support like I said before. Apart from being the best CB in the world right now, he's an absolute master at long cross-field diagonals. Watched the Holland - N Ireland game a few weeks back, I swear he tried about 10 of those in the first half alone, and 8 or 9 of them had pinpoint accuracy. What a gem of a player.

I still had a season pass with my dad at FC Groningen, the year when van Dijk "broke through" in the Dutch league. You could tell he was a great player and amazing defender, furthermore, he only made mistakes because of the fact the game was so easy for him, if that makes sense haha. he only lacked some focus at that time. seeing him be honoured as greatest center back at this moment is awesome :)
Just admire his composure and skill, he rarely needs to make those “runs” or “slide tackles” because of his awareness.

@Niranjan Rajesh nah i don't think so, his long balls and presence probably yes but there's always a chance created but the forwards are wasting alot of them. The thing is, Liverpool's chance creator are from the fullbacks, so if the opposition are giving a hard time for Trent and Robertson, they struggle alot to create as that was their source of chance creating. And that's the reason why we bring in Alcantara, to pull the strings, control the tempo and creating chance from midfield as there's another option to do so if the fullbacks are struggling in a game.
@Niranjan Rajesh we did missed him throughout the season where a game like the madrid away, city and chelsea at home could've been a game changer(or not). Also, we lost our captain in the process it's hard to protect the backline as well but those lads on centre backs are settled in at the back end of the season and put on a proper shift in to secure the top 4 so I'd say it's a good job for them

The thing that makes him the best defender is the way he can made a tackle so accurate. If he would be off by 1/10 of a second or a cm he would get some red cards believe me. You can clearly see most of the opponents accepting they have been humiliated, instead od fouled. They would be 'crying' if someone else would tackle them like that, they know with Virgil that he just outplayed them, with ease. Not mentioning the obvious, his speed, strength, passing and leader ship qualities.
