One of those songs to sit back and relax to and remember that time if you were around. Such awesome memories for me, mostly carefree. Peaked at #9 on Jan 20, 1979.
I love this song and have since it's release in 1978. Clapton's best in my humble opinion. #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Eric Clapton's third, top ten hit in America.
No need to humble your opinion. As I am just a tad younger than Eric, Ive seen enough to know he's the pick of the crop, in that season. This song actually is a sad song, when you understand what it means
Hadn't heard this song in decades, then heard this song while driving across the beautiful countryside of Ireland solo... was in one of those "at peace" moments life can bring, song always brings me back.... great tune.
Kevin Coyne I hear ya man!....the 1970's in the u.s.a. were so great....cooking shrimp, crabs, oysters etc on the beaches of the gulf of Mexico....bass fishing, drag racing muscle cars, bar hopping....working hard and playing hard and we had THE FREEDOM to do it....it was a simpler and better time....I sure do miss it!

I've used this song for an ended marriage and other not so long lasting relationships. I always know right where to find it when needed. When my daughter asked why we got divorced, I played it for her, he sums it up perfectly. Thanks Eric!
This is one of my favorites by Eric Clapton . I was only 11 or 12 yrs old riding to school on my school van when I first heard it and fell in love with the song.
This song popped into my head for no reason bout 2 weeks ago. Couldn't remember the name of the song or who wrote it. Tried, in vain, to Google it. Then a week later heard it on the radio and shazamed it. Nostalgia was so thick I was back in 1979
Yeah same with me. I looked him up on TH-cam and just kept trying some of his songs till I hit paydirt. I used to hate this song because they played it so much. Then I found myself singing it when it came on the radio. Go figure?
I woke up the other day humming the rhythm. And I was like who sung that ... 48 hours latter it hit me. I even asked a bunch of my music buddies. A lost gem 🙏
One of Clapton’s top 10 songs as far as I am concerned. The only thing I don’t like about it is that whenever I hear it, it gets stuck in my head for the rest of that day. Just love it though.
this song is brilliant in its simplicity. I'm 38, took some living to get to the point where i can now recognize how wonderful it is on so many levels. understated elegance with an edge, all thanks to the beauty of unadorned truth
angelo bianchi life is simple Angelo.... PEOPLE make it hard....I know because I've done it...all the things I ran away from as a young man Ive come back to now.... CLAPTON IS WONDERFUL!
This is my favorite Eric Clapton song. It shows his softer side, a surprise considering his harder rock image. In my opinion, this is Eric at his best.
A true masterpiece. It's disconcerting how such a beautiful song can have such painful lyrics. And that background vocal the slide guitar's synch with the whole thing. Just magic!
"We made a vow that we'd always be friends, How could we know that promises end" Nostalgic about the good times with my ex tonight, came here to cry along with those lyrics. Classic tune, thank you so much for posting.
For all of the extreme ups-and-down's of Eric's life and brilliant career (everyone knows them), he is one of the few mega-successful rockers to retain a refreshing sense of humility. And "Promises" is my all-time favorite of his solo material.
Picking one Eric Clapton song as the very best he ever did, is a hard choice, given how many GREAT songs he has done. But this is not a bad choice, at all.
Saw him at the Hartford Civic Center in 85 doing security. I think I spent most of the night looking at Marcy-couldn’t take my eyes and ears off her- great voice and a total babe…
Country Eric is my favorite Eric. Country Dead is my favorite Dead. Country Skynyrd is my favorite Skynyrd. I just plain like the old-school country, whether by rock/pop singers, or country singers.

Eric Clapton was born to ooze music. He is one of the few musicians whose work you not only hear and feel, but I can actually taste his music. It has a certain flavor to it. There are better players, better singers, better songwriters, but this man was simply born to make a difference in people's lives with his gift of musical talent. Nobody is God except God, but I think Eric has been to heaven and back.
StratFinders I will slightly argue the "better players". There are better technical players, (SRV is my all time fav), but to your point of "feeling", I totally agree. SRV is one who "felt" it. You could see it in his face. Clapton is one of the all time greats.
You can really here Don William's influence on Clapton in this song, same ease in his voice and low tones. He and Don had become very good friends around this time, Don had given him Tulsa Time (which Don also had a hit with) around this time as well. I can almost here Don singing this song as well, just sounds so much like one of his songs. Clapton is amazing and got all of his credit for his career....I wish the same could be said for Don. He passed away earlier this year virtually unknown. HE had so many great songs, such a great voice and a gentle soul. But even with all of that, I would be shocked if I could find 5 people that know who he was....really sad.
