    Don’t get the title wrong, Felipe is amazing and makes beautiful watches, but they are now available starting at 12k and the FPSK22 was like 16k, so not really the 900$ from his start anymore. And now that he gets the international attention, his prices probably rise even more. I‘m really happy for him, but sadly his watches are now out of my financial range, still a grail, so maybe one day I get one

      @Auschwitz Soccer Ref. Yes I know that, he improved his finishing and other skills to a degree where its only fair to ask those prices. Its just that he used to be undervalued, which was not fair to him and his work, but it was a bargain to get a Sternenhimmel for 4500€

    • @mruniverse3213
      @mruniverse3213 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He had to buy expensive machines and to hire multiple others to even remotely keep up with the orders. My guess would be that the 900€ were only possible by basically charging the least amount possible to survive, but not to expand or even make profit.

All the best.

    Mr. Pikullik's skelettonizing is very elegant and his finishing 100%.
    Yet I must agree with him that case/plate/bridge design and finish are not yet watch - making if the movement is outhouse. People like mr. Daniels, mr. Pratt and mr. Smith and maybe mr. Raúl Pagès are watchmakers. Mr. Pikullik can rightly sell his redesigned versions for a lot of money and thus enable himself a time slot to create and make his own movement!

    Um, this sounds kinda ... exaggerated. The standard Swiss program handles all of the finishing, micromechanics, and detail stuff in second year. First year is service. I know an acquaintance that's in the program right now, he's said there's talk about splitting the 2 year program into a 1 year service program and a 1 year making, finishing, designing program with the service course as the prerequisite. The idea is that most students of watchmaking don't actually, and according to my acquaintance are actively discouraged to, want to make watches, and just want the service job asap.
    Felipe here kinda screwed himself with his ego as knowing how to service complications like the moon phase he wants to do, as well as the multiple of more complex/smaller movement assemblies they learn is quite valuable in terms of wanting to design his own, as well as access to some of the other ateliers for mentorship. My acquaintance has been to workshops/week-long specialist courses from small Indies like Lundis Bleu, to industry giants like Cartier, to absolutely top tier manufacturers like Greubel Forsey. All through the second year of the program and not being an impatient egomaniac.
    For Felipe here it's a huge jump from modification of a giant Unitas, no matter how nicely done, to a from-scratch in-house movement. He's done no wheel manufacturing work, no pinion manufacturing, depthing, jewel sizing, keyless works development... It isn't impossible to do it this way, but Felipe definitely set himself on the far more difficult path to get there.

    • @only_m5gic782
      @only_m5gic782 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I know he's done the moonphase entirely by hand/from scratch, which includes the points you mentioned like gear manufacturing. But I know what you mean. We'll see when/if the in house movement comes. However I still like the idea that someone uses a normal eta as a base, saves one the trouble to send it directly to him for service (i got one of the 900$s), but I guess this in house movement is a watchmakers thing...

    • @dimman77
      @dimman77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@only_m5gic782 Yeah it seems he traded the formal access to manufacturers the Swiss program offers to a more traditional apprenticeship, particularly with Kudoke, that opens some of the behind the scenes doors to supporting manufacturers. Looking at his IG for as much of his work is superbly hand done there are indications of fully modern laser and CNC processes. Like while he's handsawing a 3/4 plate to skeletonize it, it appears to start from a non-ETA 649x CNC'd piece. Probably the same outside supply chain (Doko...) that provides the bases for Habring2 and Kudoke.

    • @felipepikullik5958
      @felipepikullik5958 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am very pleased that someone looks as detailed as you on the work. As you have already recognized, not the entire watch is handmade but only partially and mostly finished. It is the goal in the future to make more and more parts by hand just like the moon phase where I handmade all parts for the complication. Both the axles and the gears and plates that are responsible for the moon. You can see everything transparently on Instagram.
      Maybe you can understand that I couldn't start directly with a completely handmade watch because I couldn't afford financially to work on such a big project and start directly with something like that. Therefore, I started with the watches as you can currently see them with as much work as I can put in there with full passion and intention to create something high quality and beautiful.

    • @dimman77
      @dimman77 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@felipepikullik5958 The handwork you do is still some of the best I've seen. It seems that a lot of the people buying/patrons of independent and haute horology misunderstand the limitations of time and cost put on by a FULLY "hand made" watch. And the expectations seem extraordinarily high for handwork, but at the same time a lot of automation processes are accepted as hand work by a media that doesn't have a full grasp of the processes.

    What an incredibly odd story as well. A combination of honing raw talent into a genius level of master craft out of sheer passion, and a dogged persistence to acquire the skills through adversity to support curating the raw talent, yet in spite of all that required, an almost stubborn business naivety and resistance to recognising the monetary value of that same talent to painstakingly cultivated. I feel at once envious of those who were Abel to acquire a piece of actual real watchmaking at 900USD as I feel sorry that there weren't people close and strong enough to protect Felipe from his business nativity (more than once, even). I hope he gets through this rough patch, because that is what it must be to spend 30x the time and resources required to make 900USD pieces. Sounds to me he could do with a mecenas.

      Hi there
      I have been following your watfinder for the last few years,
      It is very calming, not rushing too fast into detail
      Good work

    One watch nerd better than rolly Polie.
    More hands-on.
    For the rich people who love watches you need to look on.
    Roly is made by a vending machine compared to this. 4 men allowed there to touch what I hear. Security stuff and all.
    Like grand seiko craftsman.
    You have to have a watch someone touched, got educated and made.
    The name is not a watch like this.
    Good. Fly.
    Great awsome review.
    Now I have to research. 😊

    It MUST BE... I should know, I've built and modded over 100 of them... and love them!!!

    Disgraceful treatment he received if what you say is true.
    The man has been interviewed on Marko’s channel previously. I can understand why his tutors took issue with how he looks. He is clearly 100 times better looking than any of them, more modest, more humble and most importantly far more talented than the lot of them.
    And it’s an amazing story to hear that he worked for a Japanese watchmaker in Berlin who told him he’s too good to work for him.
    Recently he has posted a lot of short videos on his instagram account and the videos themselves are done so elegantly. His watches are so elegant and handsome.
    I think I understand why he’s not happy to call himself a watchmaker. Until he has made everything himself he won’t be satisfied. Typical of an obsessive genius.
    I wish I’d purchased one of his watches before, now the prices are sky high and well out of my budget

    Yes, this is a prototype but there are just too many hanging burrs from the machining process. The laser sintering looks good but some localized polishing would make things Pop....things like the lettering having a mirror finish would greatly raise the appeal without much effort.

    Simple. Build one of the 30 every other month while prioritizing new orders. Those on the 30 will be happy since the value of their watch will keep on climbing. And filipe can manage his cash flow problem using deposits and sales from the new watches.
