That comment brings back so many memories. I also remember the ads for that Bruce Willis game that had the tagline "Praise the lord and pass the ammunition" It was an Activision game. Think it was called Apocalypse.
Such a usable game... A friends computer tended crash when he played Forsaken. He wasn't really the most technically inclined person, so he called on his friends to help him. So we were a couple of guys who pulled his machine appart and checked it out. Turned out it overheated because he was breeding dust bunnies in the CPU heatsink. Once we've euthanised the dust bunnies I installed a heat monitoring utility and configured it to warn by playing some audio files. These were files we pulled from the Forsaken CD. The first warning was just something about the heat being on or something like that. When it got seriously hot it played a file used when one of the opponents dies. As I remember he screamed "I hate you!" as his thingus went up in flames, and the CPU monitor would play this over and over until either the CPU hit critical heat or it cooled down. To make sure my friend wouldn't miss it I ran that through an audio editor, raising the volume as high as possible without clipping. Finally when the CPU temperature got to critical levels it screamed "Game over man. Game over..." and I think it shut down the machine, though I'm not entirely sure about that. Naturally we didn't tell him about this monitor program, or what it would do. I mean, what would be the fun in that? So task completed I just had to sit back and wait for the call... Some time later, weeks or months, I don't really remember, he called and the first thing he said was "My computer hates me..."
Man, some of those early 3D games in the 90s had such a cool aesthetic. Maybe they aren't particularly pretty to modern eyes but they just had so much charme.
YES. Very techno and dark hallways, not grey, brown, black and sad, just the illuminated hidden rooms and buildings is such an atmosphere. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, though from 2000, nails this exquisitely.
I'll now use this game now to benchmark my retro machines. Phil could you perhaps do a video or list here games from the 90's and early 2000's that feature a benchmark option.
I remember playing this on the N64 a lot when I was a child, I'm very tempted to get the remaster on PC now given Nightdive has been making a lot of amazing work with their remasters.
This video was a joy to watch! The game usually wouldn't be my genre, but your enthusiasm for it is just plain refreshing. I wish more review videos were like this!
I LOVED this game! Total random purchase back in the day (I was bored waiting for Half-life to finally get released) and the only one (of very many regrettable purchases - HMV was on my way home from work) but absolutely loved it! I had a full surround system and sub plugged into my 400mhz dell and the thump of the weapons was just amazing - even more so than the rail gun in Quake 2. With this for the action and effects, Podracer for the speed and (when it eventually came out) Half-life for the brains and narrative, I had everything I could want from 90's gaming. Oh and Combat flight sim, and outcast, and jediknight and mysteries of the sith, and quake 2-3, and.... you know I think I kept HMV in business in 98-2000.
This game was my childhood! I spent most of my days playing PS games with my cousin. But this is by far the one we most played! The gameplay is fantastic, the music a masterpiece and our active imagination crafted the most beautiful storylines and challenges! I didn't even watch the video yet, but I'm so excited! I fricking L O V E this game!
Ah, memories. I remember my family and I playing the N64 port. My dad always picked "Low-kay-Sah-nah!" And yeah, killer soundtrack. Underrated music from an underrated time.
I couldn't get away from the ads either, but they just didn't work on me. I enjoyed the review though the PC version does look slick. PSX, which I would have bought/rented not so much.
A local tech enthusiasts club made an arcade cabinet from spare PC parts and arcade joysticks/buttons, and it had Forsaken on it. It's... pretty hard to control, but hey, playing this game on a standup cabinet was wierd in a good way.
I have the Amiga version of Shogo. :-) One of the rarer titles in my collection. Was only a few hundred made (which is a coincidence 'cos there's probably only a few hundred Amigas upgraded enough to run it).
Check out Overload. It was released more recently and was developed by the same team who did the original games. It's way way better than Descent: Underground and stays true to what made Descent great in the first place.
I didn't know the remaster came out, I was so confused on why several people I follow were putting up retro reviews of this game. Still have no clue what the cover has to do with the game itself. It reminds of the late 90's horror movie craze post scream when all horror movie posters and cover boxes looked like G.Q. Photo shoots and had nothing to do with the content of the movie.
In their defense, there is almost no good way to advertise this game. A picture of a ship shooting bullets would look identical to the covers of 500 other games. Each of them forgettable.
"in a world where science has stepped beyond the realms of humanity", well, that happened ... smartphones took over and replaced everything. Just waiting for sentient robots to rise and Earth to be destroyed. I remember playing the demo of this game on Playstation back in the day, and playing it quite a lot. Nowadays I play the N64 version on an emulator.
Just wanted to say that I have Forsaken: The Music playing on Spotify right now, thanks to you. Good stuff to groove along to in the background while I work.
Thanks for covering this game. Man I had almost forgotten playing this back in the day. I absolutely loved this game. Played it soooo much. Totally going to pick up the remastered version from your link. Thanks!
2:17 Holy shit, Spaceorb 360. Speaking of "I forgot that was a thing." That would be SUCH great Oddware material, although I have a suspicion they're probably rare and expensive these days.
Heh, I have one of these in one of my gaming junk drawers, waiting for me to try out (found it at a local thrift for 90 cents awhile ago). And just looked on Ebay, and you weren't kidding: I saw three on there, and the two singles were going for $49.99 and $59.99 used with no driver!
I've been binging this so hard since it came out on GOG. I still love this box art... It's so weird and dumb and wonderful. I'd kill for a big box version of it.
There's something that really freaks me out about late 90's stuff, anything really from films to games to tv. I was old enough at the time (aged about 5-9) to remember this stuff fairly well yet young enough that it all seems kind of alien to me. The fact that I was around to remember this stuff just makes me feel super old!
That happened to me with a sealed copy of Resident Evil Nemesis for the PSX. The Wal-Mart wouldn't even refund my money because I could've removed the CD at home and tried to get a refund on the empty CD case. They told me I should have looked before I left the checkout line. So the next time I bought groceries there, I held up the checkout line for a half hour while I opened every box at the counter to make sure I was getting 28 ounces of Cheerios, 30 Gorton fish fillets, etc. "No, you wouldn't refund my game because I didn't check it at the counter, so I am going to check EVERYTHING at the counter before I leave." (They finally got the point and gave me a refund for the game.)
It happened to me when I bought 'the orange box' way back when - it contained the disk, but not the steam key. Thankfully the shop wasn't difficult about it, and I guess this was happening to them a lot since the person at the desk didn't seem surprised.
How does that even happen? Could someone crafty slip the CD out without breaking the seal? Did less-advanced factories sometimes fail to get the CD in?
I forgot this game existed until the released the remastered version but I immediately remembered it once I saw the box art, even though I never actually played the game.
Thanks for reviewing this. I was one of the artists working on the PC version. The only game I worked on where the whole team spent their lunch hour 'testing' the LAN multiplayer. We didn't really want the singleplayer mode. The multiplayer mode was more or less complete but management were adamant that that nobody would buy a multiplayer only game so the dev team was expanded and we bolted on a single player campaign which made the whole development period longer than it should have been. Then just before Forsaken was released, multiplayer-only Quake 3 come out and cleaned up.
Indeed I remember when it came out....wan't impressed with the cover art, if I only knew....I loved Decent I would have picked forsaken in a heart beat.
Had so much fun with this game on the N64! I remember this game was often used to showcase the Voodoo 2 graphics card aswel. Would sometimes be bundled with it too.
Thanks for the video! The one thing you missed out on testing (or, at least, mentioning) is the Aureal A3D support. I remember playing this in college dorms with another guy across the hall, and he was frustrated in MP because I'd always be able to find him so quickly thanks to the spectacular 3D audio support.
Yeah, Shadowman was pretty cool at that time. And I love how their incorporated him into that calendar - keeping the theme of shirtless people with orange hue all along:)
Unfortunately, unlike Deus Ex, Forsaken, P.O.D., Unreal, and other games of that era, Shadowman has not aged well. Not the PC version, anyway. Like Khanemis says, it was cool *at the time* but the last time I tried to play it, I played maybe 15 minutes and haven't touched it again.
Man seeing that box art instantly took me back 20 years... and did anyone else get an unreal vibe from this? Maybe its the sound score, or the cool lighting and industrial setting.
I have never played because i used to think that was a very hardcore violent game, not for my age (back in 98). But i had ExtremeG, XG2, Re-Volt, Primal Rage and other Acclai\Probe games so now i feel a responsability to complete the list!
"The game begins, there is carnage ahead. In for the victor there is honor and the spoils of battle. For the vanquished, there is pain and humiliation. Failure is not an option for the Forsaken."
Clint, you've done it again. First was the 3D graphics demo that you control a fly in (of course I forgot the name again), and now Re-Volt. Another game I played the crap out of when I was a kid but could never find any info on years later.
1997 E3 in Atlanta, I'll never forget the look on Mike Kulas' (Original Co Dev of Descent) face at when we walked in and saw Forsaken being played ... "THAT'S OUR GAME!"
LGR I would personally like to THANK YOU for showing me a game that I could never remember for the life of me as a teen to adult now. I got this game today because of you. Gotta love the classics!
Man, I love this. Extreme G was and continues to be one of my favorite games for the N64 because of it's visual style, fast pace and music. The fact that this looks and feel so similar by the same developer, I wish I knew about this before. I'll definitely give it a try.
That was such an awesome game back then . I played it daily and never got tired of it . The action was so fast and constant and yet not overwhelming or repetitive . Thank LGR for the memories .
I loved this game back in the day, but never finished it. I think I played it more to just show off the hardware capabilities and pretty visuals. Certainly the most colorful game I owned at the time.
Thank you for making this video. I was actually thinking about this game a while back but couldn't remember the name. Thank you for reminding me of this gem
you should totally do an episode on Descent and its sequels, as well as the spiritual successors in recent times! Descent was on of my favorites growing up.
Well this is strange. Just 3 days ago I remembered the sexy magazine ads this game used back in the 90s and looked it up again. I loved those days. Then I see this video in my watch stuff and think its because I looked all that old stuff up. But nope its a new LGR video! How weird . 1998 was an AMAZING year both in pc gaming and in my life. Ill always cherish it. Nice video Clint with a lot of info. I never got past the sexy cool ads and never knew what the game was or looked like. Im actually surprised its a Decent type game and that is looks pretty sweet. In those days it would have been amazing. Its like they threw all the 3D VooDoo lights at it.
I played this game for so many hours when I was 11. My dad built a really nice computer at the time and this was the first game he bought for it. When he was at work I'd play it basically all day long. One of my fave childhood memories was joining him and his friends for LAN parties where we'd play Forsaken all night - the first time they weren't going to let me join but I was able to convince them after a test round where I completely owned them!
I remember playing this at a FLGS where the owner had a TV set up to play games. I can't remember the name of the guy, but his quote upon selecting him in the character select menu was "Okay people, Ugly's back in town." Something about that quote just seemed amusing to me, and I've carried it with me all my life.
Great stuff, man! Having only played the N64 version, it's definitely a different experience. I don't remember any sort of cutscene, so you had like no context as to what happened and what to do when the game started. The music was different too. Far more processed, since the N64 had very limited music options compared to other platforms.
For a couple months in 1998, you couldn't turn on Cartoon Network or Comedy Central without hearing "The Future is Forsaken." That ad was everywhere.
That comment brings back so many memories. I also remember the ads for that Bruce Willis game that had the tagline "Praise the lord and pass the ammunition" It was an Activision game. Think it was called Apocalypse.
@@12ealDealOfficial wow. Activision was pretty much making and publishing cod games before cod was even a thing, huh?

That is in a single word "Hilarious". You gave me my laugh for the day for sure!
I used to crash when playing this game, my brain
Can’t wait to try that trick of writing a game name on CD :-)
me too but it might make your cd reader spit out ink
Wonder if it works with unreleased games too
Careful I hear it creates shitty creepy pastas
Man, some of those early 3D games in the 90s had such a cool aesthetic. Maybe they aren't particularly pretty to modern eyes but they just had so much charme.
Triple M maybe it's nostalgy, but I love the slightly blurry textures and colored dynamic lighting
Ndlanding Ah oui, charme et nostalgie sont comme de l'eau tiède pour les jambes 😄
Triple M Right! I just recently discovered Slave Zero, and it reminds me of that same, cool aesthetic.
YES. Very techno and dark hallways, not grey, brown, black and sad, just the illuminated hidden rooms and buildings is such an atmosphere. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, though from 2000, nails this exquisitely.

This is insane. I felt the urge to bust out forsaken 64 this morning and so I did. An hour later this video gets uploaded. WHAT IS HAPPENING
Your old school game reviews are always spot on. Usually my favorite selection. Great stuff!
I played this game in the late 90s, bit the only fps that caught my attention back in 98 was Shogo, I still remember that game 20 years later.
I have the Amiga version of Shogo. :-)
One of the rarer titles in my collection. Was only a few hundred made (which is a coincidence 'cos there's probably only a few hundred Amigas upgraded enough to run it).

I agree Overload is way better than D:U.

You may wish the cover had something to do with the game, but when you mix boobs, heart tattoos, and the late 1990s, you get Trespasser.
SimonCallahan that cover always confused the shit out of me.

I saw it and thought to myself, "If LGR hasn't done a video on this yet, he needs to."
Apparently there was a PLAYSTATION version of that controller. (Obviously, this game was one of like five things it was compatible with.)
Spaceorb 360s are valuable? Damn, I need to dig mine out...
I had the N64 version so did not get the full FMV intro. Now with the remaster I now know Richard Ridings is the voice of Dungeon Keeper and Forsaken.
I've been binging this so hard since it came out on GOG. I still love this box art... It's so weird and dumb and wonderful. I'd kill for a big box version of it.

Sucks about getting ripped on the sealed copy. I hate when that happens
"No, you wouldn't refund my game because I didn't check it at the counter, so I am going to check EVERYTHING at the counter before I leave."

"The Future is Forsaken"
I remember hearing that at the Acclaim booth at the 1998 E3. They even had the lady from those ads appear at the show.
I played the PS1 version to death, The ps1 disk had a light printing on the surface that said 'Abandon All Hope'.
Had so much fun with this game on the N64! I remember this game was often used to showcase the Voodoo 2 graphics card aswel. Would sometimes be bundled with it too.
For some reason I always thought Forsaken was a survival horror game based on the cover lol
For those that love the genre, Overload (from makers of original Descent series) is now released on Steam and it supports VR.
The Rear-View screen is a nice touch to the game. I'm only familiar with Descent for these types of games, but for 1998 looks pretty cool.
There is just something about low poly 3d at high framerates. Bet it's even prettier at 75hz.
I barely play videogames and these reviews are fascinating and entertaining. You, sir, have a gift for this!
I can’t believe someone resealed an empty game box and sold it to you! I HATE scammers!

yes but even so bad its fun to play with friends now funny how any game on the 64 had bad controls with 80 buttons :)

I see Forsaken.... I click
Hell yeah I remember this one, and it was awesome with multiplayer over LAN with friends in the high school computer lab.
Do a Shadow Man video... urm man
That was such an awesome game back then . I played it daily and never got tired of it . The action was so fast and constant and yet not overwhelming or repetitive . Thank LGR for the memories .
Descent or nothing!
I loved this game back in the day, but never finished it. I think I played it more to just show off the hardware capabilities and pretty visuals. Certainly the most colorful game I owned at the time.
PC version really does look weird. I've only played the N64 version
better, the word you're looking for is "better" ;)
I remember playing this game at LAN parties in deathmatch mode, was great fun.
I miss the "Greetings!" In the beginning. If this happens again, I might have to unsubscribe!
Thank you for making this video. I was actually thinking about this game a while back but couldn't remember the name. Thank you for reminding me of this gem
I totally forgot about the early LGR Viking beard!
You could organize a Forsaken-Quake- or whatever 90's shooter on-line tournament. The winner would get one of your amazing sandwiches.
Haven't seen the name Andy Hughes in a long time. I brought his labelmate DJ Sandy to Anderson back in '98.
you should totally do an episode on Descent and its sequels, as well as the spiritual successors in recent times!
Mate you are very articulate. I just love your commentary. Good up the good work 👍
I played this game for so many hours when I was 11.
God damn, I was getting confused navigating the vent ducts on the facehugger level in AvP2, this thing would melt my head.
I remember playing this at a FLGS where the owner had a TV set up to play games. I can't remember the name of the guy, but his quote upon selecting him in the character select menu was "Okay people, Ugly's back in town." Something about that quote just seemed amusing to me, and I've carried it with me all my life.
Anyone notice that the drum and bass were spot on for Toonami back in the 90's and early 2000's? Also this makes me want to play decent 2 again.
Man i still remember playing Forsaken on my playstation one with my friends in deathmatch mode. Good times indeed.
I loved this game! Awesome to see a review on it.
This is exactly how I envisioned LGR presenting this game.
Great stuff, man! Having only played the N64 version, it's definitely a different experience. I don't remember any sort of cutscene, so you had like no context as to what happened and what to do when the game started. The music was different too. Far more processed, since the N64 had very limited music options compared to other platforms.
