When it comes to taking the crew ashore, rowing an inflatable is awkward and slow. On the other hand, a heavy outboard hanging on the stern rail is at best a flag of convenience. How about a Torqueedo electric outboard motor, which is smaller, lighter, and comes apart for easy storage belowdecks with no fluids to leak or stain the doilies? The jury will be out for a while on the question of lifespan and battery endurance, but the initial impression is good.

haha $600 for the batteries, I bought my used Prindle 16 including the trailer for $500. Hopefully one day I'll have enough expendable income to be able to afford all these goodies. One step at a time. Love your videos, keep posting them!
We have enjoyed all your videos, especially your trip to Hawaii having
made the same trip. We also like small sailing dinghies and we
manufacturer trim tabs and sail rigs which add performance (for motors
like the Torqueedo) and sailing capability for inflatable boats.
Can also use a small electric trolling motor and $100 marine battery. I've even used that combo for my 21 foot day sailor when I had outboard problems.
That's what I was thinking. Torqueedo is just a very expensive battery/computer combo hooked up to a little trolling motor.
We have a Torquedo T1300 on our 5 person Zodiac dinghy, and we love it

I was thinking the same thing, you almost have to buy the extra battery which makes the 2.3HP Honda 4 stroke for about $900 and a 5 year warranty a good deal

Unsure but true, inflatable use a lot of petrol, donno with electricity, but I assume it's the same.

Wow I have the same inflatable West Marine RU-3, a Torqeedo 1003 travel probably he same Christian is using and if everything goes well I'll have an Ericson 32-3 this weekend like Christians old boat

Any updated thoughts after 3 years with the Torqueedo? Do you still like it? Is it holding up?
My use is pretty light, but the components and battery remain in new condition. I did hit a rock with the plastic propeller, breaking it and the shear pin, and now carry a spare (more than $100 worth of plastic). The original impression remains strong: no gasoline or oil, no smoke, no hard starting after six months in a locker, fairly quiet operation. Easy to store belowdecks, on its side. I continue to think it's a marvelous outboard for small inflatables, especially non-ribs, which don't plane well anyhow (but whose virtue is small storage and light weight). A high-speed larger dinghy would benefit from a 4-stroke, which would be my choice for planing speeds and longer crew transport. Is the Torqueedo worth all the dough? It is if you hate outboards, especially outboards hanging off the stern pulpit 12 months a year.

I think that high-pitched whining sounds much worse than a gas engine, TBH ... have they made any improvements to this sound over the past 5 years?
What model of the Torqeedo is this, and how long is the rubber boat?

One mile to shore is typical for me. If I foresaw 5 or ten mile destinations, the Torqueedo would not be for me.
Christian Williams , Thank you for the update. In regards of battery performance, did it reduced over the years or about the same compare to when it was new? What other expenses?

and battery last for... whoa its already empty.

Been looking at this brand and the Elco models.
Probably only used the Torquedo six weekends, but satisfied. No gas, no oil, no drips--very light, stores flat in the quarterberth. That's what I paid for. But my needs are minimal and maybe personal--i find outboards hung off stern railings as ugly as satellite dishes there.

So...any error messages? Mine has been good for a year so far!
So far, so good. Did break a shear pin hitting a rock. Now have spares and a second propeller in reserve.
Charging this outboard by onboard 12 volts. Do you know what the amp draw is?
Looks like he has the 18Ah battery, someone says it takes 10 hours to charge.. so do the math, add some more for losses, but I would imagine about 2-2.5A should be fine.
...so this can hold 5 to 6 people..???...
I think the rating is 3.5 people, but inflatables can float just about anything you can fit in. Six probably OK for short distance if some are kids.
How long does it take to charge?

Upon further research, apparently about 10 hours. You can also use a solar panel and charge while you use it. I like that idea.
Big question though, how much is one of these? Comparable to a new gas outboard?

About $1500 on line if no ST.
The Torqueedo manufacturer--it's a German product--gives predictions of battery life from eight hours to one hour, depending on throttle. A reasonable speed of about 2-3 knots gives 6-7 hours or maybe 15 miles.
The battery takes a long time to recharge, more than 12 hours when fully discharged. An optional , expensive 12v charger is even slower. An optional, $125 fast-charger cuts the recharge to 6 hours. An optional, roll-up solar panel is $850. An optional spare battery is $650.
However, I have heard that owning a Torqueedo moves you up on the Tesla waiting list.
We'll see how it holds up. First impression is good.

It is not even 2 hp. The Torpedo looks cool, but is way overpriced! Buy a trolling motor and save money!
