The key is getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Like you said, dont let fear stop you. Keep going. My 10 yr old has SM bad and we have started medication because nothing was working. Its like magic. He's slowly trying new things. Things he never ever tried in his life, like writing notes to kids in his class, going on playground equipment, etc. Just this wk he spoke out loud to kids in his school, at recess, just "hi" but that's never ever happened. Thanks for sharing your experience. Its helpful to know theres an end to the isolation.

What medication is your child taking? Just curious. I'm so glad you are getting good results.

I still remember the first time I was put on medication for my selective mutism. I was 8. Around that time there was a holiday and our extended family went to a buffet. At one point I wandered off by myself to get a plate of food and apparently it was a huge deal for me to do something like that without fear/hesitation. Prozac simply took some of my fear/hesitation/overthinking away. Later in college when I tried Prozac again it did the same thing. For me it helped EXTREMELY with my social anxiety. I almost felt like a completely different person. It makes you forget why you're afraid to do certain things or even how it felt to be afraid of them... I made a video on my Prozac experience.
Thank you for your comment. I wish your son the best. Keep being patient and trying to understand him. Living with selective mutism as a child can be so frustrating and so hard. 😔❤️
