I went to Berea initially before transferring back closer to home. The swim test is something the Berea started doing forever ago because they realized that a vast majority of their student body had minimal swim experience and therefore at higher risk for drowning. They initiated the swim test to gage experience and then promote learning to swim for those who did not know.

I only just finished the first half of the video but I want to thank you so much for making this. I'm extremely interested in going to Berea and I haven't been able to find cons on it until I searched youtube and found you. I only kept hearing how good Berea was and felt kinda uneasy not being able to hear the downsides. This doesn't damper me wanting to go in the slightest and I feel much better being able to hear all sides of Berea. Thank you again for being honest in the downsides of Berea and happy graduation!

Ah I'm so glad my video helped you! Yes I try to be completely honest and transparent in all of my videos for that exact reason. It's super important to see both sides of anything!

Wow! I wish I had known about Berea when I was in college. I went to a college in SW MO called College of the Ozarks. It also has a work program - 15 hours a week unpaid. We also had to work one 40 hour week per semester during a holiday break, like Thanksgiving or Spring break. Room & board want included, so I worked during the summer to cover the cost.
If students wanted money, they had to get a 2nd job on top of the 15 hrs, which is a lot for full-time college students. If you worked at the restaurant, you could keep your tips, which is what I did, but it was the only paying position on campus. It was also very conservative Christian, so opposite genders were only allowed on the dorms once per semester for Open House; otherwise, it was forbidden. Only about 10% of students were racial diverse. You had to go to 15 chapels or convocations per semester. Being LGBTQ+ was completely forbidden. One of my friends was caught leaving a gay bar 3 weeks before graduation & was expelled. They didn’t let any of his credits transfer except for a few Christian theology courses they require. His family spent $30,000 taking the school to court & a conservative Christian judge sided with the school, so he had to start all over. I didn’t even realize I’m queer until after I graduated because I wasn’t free to explore who I am without fear of discrimination or getting expelled. If students are caught having sex or drinking, they’d get kicked out. Berea doesn’t sound nearly as strict. From the website, it looks like students must take religion courses, but they don’t have to be Christian to attend. For my school, it was an absolute requirement.
We also had to take a swim test or a swim class. I think colleges worry about kids drowning & don’t want to be held liable. Overall, if any students are trying to choose between Berea or College of the Ozarks, Berea sounds way better.

Thank you for the well-balanced pros and cons. Couple questions if you've the time: 1) How tolerant do you feel the Berea administration/faculty and student body is of non-Christians? 2) Are freshman required to live on campus?

Sorry for just seeing this! Berea is absolutely fine with other religions, but you will be required to take a Christian theology class eventually (called GSTR 310). At the time I wasn’t necessarily Christian, so I viewed it more as a historical learning experience. Freshman are required to live on campus! :)

Being vegan and gluten-free due to actual sensitivities I'm worried I won't be able to at least have the money to buy what I need online or drive into town to get stuff.
Also, how accepting are they of LGBTQIA+ people? I'm totally open-minded and want to be a philosophy teacher. I want to get my PhD in Philosophy eventually with a minor in classics and due to the later interest, and a general love for liberal arts-based education, I've come to happily accept that the areas tend to be religiously based. I used to be Christian and still believe similar things just not aligned with the church or any faith. That being said, I'm just worried that no matter how accepting I am of them, they might not be so, “God has made of one blood all the peoples of the earth" with me in person. I don't even need people to be accepting of me if they find out about my identity, but I just need to know the students are respectful and won't hurt me or bully me. I fear the swimming thing too, due to my top surgery scars. I could wear a tee but idk if that'd draw more attention.
Also, I might be dyslexic, did you hear of any services or help they offer for those sorts of assistance?

Sorry for the late reply! I’m not for sure the requirements to get accepted now because so much changed with Covid… I do know that while test scores matter, what you believe and the things you’ve persevered through matter more to Berea admissions! They want students who have been through things and came out stronger on the other side. Students who will persevere through Berea’s tough curriculum! ♥️ I hope this helps! :)

hey! so there is something called "eco-village" were non-trads can live during their time at Berea. i'm sure you've already reached and and talked to the college about it, but if not, you should! there's also a daycare close by that I believe is accepting babies if that's any help. :) if you just talk to your professors about your situation, majority are super understanding and considerate! i even know of professors that have let moms/dads bring their babies to class every once in awhile because of unexpected cancellations with babysitters. overall, i would say if you just communicate with staff and your professors, you will be supported.

The amount of international students at Berea is actually really high. From what I remember after taking the tour, international students make up around 5-10% of the student body. I don't know if this applies to where you're from, but Berea wants students to have a GPA of about a 3.5 or higher and an ACT score around 20-30.
