Not only is foxglove pretty, but it's also highly poisonous. Foxglove contains cardiac glycosides, a compound which increases the intensity of heart muscle contractions but diminishes the rate - and can diminish it to the point of death. Did you hear that? It stops your heart. Don't go munching on it, for heavens sake. This toxic compound is isolated by pharmaceutical producers and used to create modern heart medications like Lanoxin, used to treat congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
The plant was first brought to the attention of allopathic medicine by a Scottish doctor named Dr. William Withering. In 1785 he published a paper named Account of the Foxglove and Some of its Medicinal Uses. Ten years before, he had been unsuccessfully treating a patient with dropsy, an old-fashioned word for edema due to heart failure. After his treatments failed to produce any improvement in the patient, the family decided to try a remedy from a local woman with a knowledge of herbs, and the patient began to recover after a concoction containing foxglove was administered. Dr. Withering was excited about the turn of events and spent several years studying and experimenting with the plant. He found that the therapeutic dose was very close to the toxic dose, and he documented which methods of preparation were most effective (I haven't found out if all of his patients survived or not). Obviously the knowledge of this plant's usefulness existed long before Withering came along, but the person who writes the paper often gets the credit.

wow, sooooo much pharmaceutical knowledge Brit! I'm so impressed, I wasn't expecting all this to be mentioned! :) we still use digitalis in heart failure patients, because some types of heart failure benefit from a slower and more forceful beat, so that was right on. and you are also totally correct to mention that the therapeutic dose is close to the toxic dose... we measure blood levels in our patients when we use this drug for that very reason... and it's also why we have an antidote in case things go wrong lol!

Can the honey made by bees that take their nectar be toxic too, and what is the part of plant with the greatest concentration of the toxin?
with bees the good news is that they usually visit a variety of plants so it's highly unlikely they would be able to build up a high enough concentration to give you any trouble. In terms of what parts of the plant is toxic - flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds. So pretty much everything!

Hi! Foxglove is a biennial plant so it won't bloom the first year, but the second year you should get beautiful blossoms!

I grew these from seed this year! They're in the "rosette" stage. Animals are eating all my other flowers, but they NEVER eat these!

Hi Breanna - Sorry for the late reply on this. I missed this note somehow. They have a two year life cycle, so if you did deadhead them they wouldn't end up producing seed. Hopefully this helps.

Hi Adam! Thanks for reaching out! I've never gotten contact dermatitis from touching it.. BUT yes they are apparently poisonous to the touch and even if you don't get a reaction (like myself) you probably want to wash your hands afterwards so you don't get toxins in your eyes or mouth.

Yes it is safe to plant, smell, and touch - just don't eat it!

My friends pet name for them is dead mens bells. I spread the seeds years ago and now I cant get rid of them. A woman I work for keeps planting them but cant get them to live. Humming birds like them. Damn fairies, I cant get rid of them either. I planted too many flowerz. Thanks for the show!

How do I know when it has finished blooming. It's my first time having one. Do they re-bloom once the petals fall off ?
I didn't see mine re-bloom this year. 1st time foxglove grower here. I was however able to harvest some seeds, so I'm going to try and sow them for more.
Some species are biennial (they have a two year life cycle) and some are perennial (they'll come back year after year). If you happen to have a perennial it will bloom again next year!

oooh good question. Both have their respective poisonous qualities, but I'm going to vote for Monkshood due to all parts of the plants being poisonous and it acts on both the heart and nerves.

Hi Cassandra! In the fall the stalks with the seedpods will dry up and become brittle. At this stage you can put a bag over the stalk and give it a good shake. Hundreds of tiny seeds will fall out into your bag!

Just wanted to comment on your statement about the flowers bloom on one side. I have had a very different situation with mine as they grow all the way around stalk. Just wondering if it has to do with the variety?

I read that you should not touch foxgloves without wearing gloves. How are these poisonous flowers allowed to be sold to people as cut flowers? What if you handle food after touching the flowers or children touch them and put their fingers in their mouths. Gorgeous plants though.

Toxic Plant : Just order the seeds online after watching your video. Hopefully, the plant would save my garden from careless livestock & owners, goodbye to cattles, goats, dogs, chickens, etc.
Poisonous? I have Afib and I eat foxgloves in salad every day. It controls my heart rate!
