    Really liking this design! I am making a shield myself, but I was curious what you used to dye the rawhide? Linseed oil or something else?

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I didn't write down my exact mixture, but I diluted fiebings pro dye with a solvent... I'm fairly certain it was a mixture of linseed oil with fiebings pro dye. This is worth testing on some scrap pieces of rawhide to see how the color turns out.

    Beautiful shield! What type of software and equipment did you use to project the image on the shield? It came out looking lovely!

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you sir! I used Photoshop to clean up my sketch, and then used Resolume (a projection mapping software) to align and warp the image, and to mess with the colors/position. I used a ~3000 lumen projector on a stand to project the image onto the shield.

    Was that a projector you were using to put the image on there?? Also, how did you measure for the stitching? That's where I keep going wrong. My wrap holes don't line up with my stitching holes 😢

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I used a projector and some mapping software to do the geometry correction.
      For the stitching, I made a jig. I did some math based on the circumference of the shield, the offset of the hole locations from the edge, and getting the hole spacing to be about 1". Used the same jig for the rawhide pieces (undersizing a bit helps since wet rawhide will stretch and you want it to stretch).

    Do you soak the hide in water first and the dye it? If so how long after the hide is out of the water do you have before it shrinks?

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I did soak the rawhide in water to soften it completely (several hours), and then dyed it after. I don't know the exact timing of when I dyed it, but it was within a few hours of taking it out of the water, while it was still pliable. There has to be enough water removed from the rawhide for the dye to penetrate, so keep that in mind. Dyeing rawhide is quite a bit different than leather.

    I am gonna give this a try. I want to create a viking shield and have something to show for it. Just wondering, is there a certain Technic on how to taper the edge of the shield? and whats the 5mm Plywood Underlayment for? for extra thickness?

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used a hand plane and worked from the edge inwards. It takes a long time, but drastically improves the weight and feel of handling the shield.
      I glued the two pieces of plywood together just for extra thickness, since that was what I had around. I recommend using plywood with the proper thickness, or doing it the historically accurate way and using planks.

    What projector did you use and can it work with a smartphone? Im an artist and this would come in useful when I do murals. I store my drawings on a sd card so I can always have access to designs when away from my studio. Love your shield, and I am enthused with the viking history, my ancestory is linked to Scandinavia, Germany and Essex England. 😍

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an old Epson projector, about 3500lumens. I'm sure there may be some smartphones capable of sending a video output to the projector, but for this method I recommend using a laptop at the least. You will need to warp the image to match the geometry of the surface, that calibration shows in my video here. I used a software called resolume, although there are other projection mapping softwares out there too.
      Thanks for watching! I have a very similar ancestry to you, and am also fascinated by the history of the era. Reading the Havamal now.

    Would be better to title it as germanic round shields since many germanic peoples used them including the anglo-saxons albeit with different designs.

    • @stingraybob8933
      @stingraybob8933  ปีที่แล้ว

      The shield boss is more Germanic too, but as in the modern day there would be a fair amount of crossover between nearby societies, and archaeological evidence is very scant in this time period and location

      Thanks! I drew up the design with pencil on paper, it was about 3" tall originally. Took a photo and used a projector and projection mapping software (Resolume) to create a "flat" image on the shield. Then I projected the sketch onto the shield, messed with some colors to see what I liked best, and drew the pattern on by following the image.

      I found them at a big pet store, might have been Petco or one of those. Get the bleached white ones with no flavoring added. The jumbo sized ones were $10-15 if I recall correctly. Alternately, there are places online you can order ~3" wide rolls of rawhide.
