Splitting the Log (ASMR log crackling starts @ ~4:00)
มุมมอง 1764 ปีที่แล้ว
A neighbor had a mulberry tree felled, so I volunteered to take all the lovely yellow-orange wood. This video shows the process of splitting a ~5' length of the mulberry wood. I split the log in half, split a board off of both halves, then split one round down the center. The intact round will become my fleshing beam, for use in my leather tanning processes. I carved the mallet and both wooden ...
Cutting Down the Mulberry Tree

Footage of the tree service removing a problematic mulberry that was overhanging our yard. Tree was infested with caterpillars, which would make a huge mess each summer. Excited to use the gorgeous mulberry wood in future crafts! Soundtrack: Ozric Tentacles - Yum Yum Tree All rights go to the musical artist, thank you for the music.

Sooty Grouse on Mt Whitney
มุมมอง 1516 ปีที่แล้ว
Listen to the low-pitched "wubs" of the Sooty Grouse. Turn up your volume or listen on high quality speakers for full effect. These elusive birds are most likely to be noticed (by sound) in spring/early summer, when males "sing" a series of deep hoots, often hidden high up in a dense evergreen tree. While walking through a thick grove of pine on the way down Whitney, I noticed this thumping noi...
Spike the Hang Glider Man
มุมมอง 776 ปีที่แล้ว
Met this guy Spike on my mad dash to the Ranger station to grab the last overnight Mt Whitney permit. As is normal while travelling, my timing couldn't have been better. Watch as he takes flight from the edge of the Sierras. After this, he rode the thermals - spiralling ever higher to an altitude of 13,000ft or higher. As someone about to embark on the Whitney expedition, this was truly an insp...

Tutlie - With Your Eyes On The Ground (Music Video)
Not sure how the real Vikings made real Viking shields that were actually functional and a work of art. But Nice video beautiful work man.
Alguien puede traducir está canción?
Do you soak the hide in water first and the dye it? If so how long after the hide is out of the water do you have before it shrinks?
Yes I did soak the rawhide in water to soften it completely (several hours), and then dyed it after. I don't know the exact timing of when I dyed it, but it was within a few hours of taking it out of the water, while it was still pliable. There has to be enough water removed from the rawhide for the dye to penetrate, so keep that in mind. Dyeing rawhide is quite a bit different than leather.
Was that a projector you were using to put the image on there?? Also, how did you measure for the stitching? That's where I keep going wrong. My wrap holes don't line up with my stitching holes 😢
Yes, I used a projector and some mapping software to do the geometry correction. For the stitching, I made a jig. I did some math based on the circumference of the shield, the offset of the hole locations from the edge, and getting the hole spacing to be about 1". Used the same jig for the rawhide pieces (undersizing a bit helps since wet rawhide will stretch and you want it to stretch).
@@stingraybob8933 I see...so math and I are going to have to meet on the battlefield once again...🤣 Good stuff, man. Thanks for the reply and the info. Keep rockin it
@@MagicianDisco just remember circumference = pi * diameter and you'll be good to go!
@stingraybob8933 thanks man. I appreciate it!
did you cut into the glass table whyle cutting out the plywood
Nope, just had to reposition the wood when the jigsaw got too close for comfort. Nothing I haven't done in the past though...
Beautiful Artwork
What a cool video. Thanks.
amazing
Nice done real beautyfull
Would be better to title it as germanic round shields since many germanic peoples used them including the anglo-saxons albeit with different designs.
The shield boss is more Germanic too, but as in the modern day there would be a fair amount of crossover between nearby societies, and archaeological evidence is very scant in this time period and location
A very nice design. RAGNAR himself would be pleased to own this shield.
Wonderful, my guy. Wonderful.
I love the historical viking laser shield painting table. Exactly how a Jarl would design his shield 😂
Head over to Home Deep-Fjord for some plywood.
Hahaha, that's the elsinore team yell before launching.
Where did you get the shield boss from?
I bought it from Kult of Athena
excellent in all respects! a work of functional art! imo
Very nicely done!
Nice video, but you should lower the volume of the music. In places it drowns out your voice.
Agreed! I'll improve this for the next video
What a trip! What road did you take for your camp that first night? Does it go through petrified forest?
That road goes south from Meteor Crater and leads to some cool territory, but it is still a 2hr drive or so from Petrified Forest
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Hope to get to that part of the country some day.
Great story!
This was a fantastic video bro! I’m a Southwest native (Southwestern Utah), and I love when people can appreciate the beauty of the desert! The music and scenery where superb brother. I’m glad you got out of Zion safely, monsoon season can be REALLY sketch here in Utah. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video bro! Please keep them coming! Never seen your content before but if there’s any more viking tools of warfare production then I’m subbing and watching more! 🍻
but what a good job, stingray, congrats, nice shield and good music, amazing 😃😃
Useing a projector. Not seen that before. Very clever. Saves on paper and pencils
where did "vikings"get their plywood?
These shields were made from planks originally, I used plywood out of convenience.
Really a awesome job!!
Great work! I like the riveted nails ..top crafted..and the helmet is cool too did you make that ?
Thank you! I did make the helmet, unfortunately did not make a video of that process but it is almost entirely made of foam. I plan on making a metal one in the future.
I was thinking "yeah I could probably do this" up until the mental projector part
Haha the projection mapping is certainly a specialized skill, but it isn't required! It just helps with more complex/symmetrical designs like mine.
How did you utilize the Rawhide Bones? Did you soak them in Water or how did you prepare them?
Yes I soaked the bones in water for about six hours and then trimmed them into roughly 3" wide strips.
Can you tell me which metal do you use for the boss? Thanks
Its an iron boss, one of the few parts I bought off the shelf
Super.
Awesome helmet I have to say
Thank you! I made that as well, sadly did not film the process but perhaps I'll make a second one for another video
This is fantastic
SUPER.
Beautiful shield! What type of software and equipment did you use to project the image on the shield? It came out looking lovely!
Thank you sir! I used Photoshop to clean up my sketch, and then used Resolume (a projection mapping software) to align and warp the image, and to mess with the colors/position. I used a ~3000 lumen projector on a stand to project the image onto the shield.
@@stingraybob8933 that’s genius, it came out great.
@@stingraybob8933 😮😶 amazing
This is amazing I wanna try this out but it will be no where as good as yours!
That is gorgeous!!!! Great job!
Snyggt
Totally bad@$$.... Thanks for sharing this!
hmm after seeing the computer tracing stuff, i think it would be cool if one can put programmable LEDs on the surface of the shield.
Vikings of the future, decked out in LEDs
I am gonna give this a try. I want to create a viking shield and have something to show for it. Just wondering, is there a certain Technic on how to taper the edge of the shield? and whats the 5mm Plywood Underlayment for? for extra thickness?
I used a hand plane and worked from the edge inwards. It takes a long time, but drastically improves the weight and feel of handling the shield. I glued the two pieces of plywood together just for extra thickness, since that was what I had around. I recommend using plywood with the proper thickness, or doing it the historically accurate way and using planks.
You say to us thank you for watching...to you I say thank you for making.
Gramercy!
Did you use the same dye for the wood and the rawhide?
Not the same mixture for both, but the same ingredients
Wow... I think you had a mini silk worm farming going!
Hungarian colors, good choice on my opponion
What software are you using for the heraldry?
I sketched up the design by hand, took a photo, brought it into photoshop, then brought it into resolume to project it onto the shield itself.
That's truely a piece of art, Sir!
Beautiful work
