Genesis/mega drive version was around 90~120 USD when it was released. The extra cost was due to a chip inside the cartridge that was able to render the game in 3D. Like Star Fox on Snes.
@TrueSinister Not really. The games main calculations still run on the 32x. The most that the Mega Drive's CPU would be doing is directing player input to the 32x and receiving calls to the soundchip (ie like what was done with DOOM)
The Genesis/Megadrive version kind of cheated though since that version had an extra chip called the "Sega Virtua Processor" in the game cartridge itself. It wasn't running on just the Genesis/Megadrive hardware alone. That takes away some of the merit.

Sure it did. But that's not a big surprise since SEGA used a chip as expensive as the SVP. Nintendo had the edge either way since they made games with Super FX chip affordable. Having Virtua Racing in my collection today is - of course - a nice asset, but back then I didn't want to spend 100 bucks (actually it was even more in europe) for a racing game with 3 tracks, impressive graphics or not.
@HONOR Of course is superior. It was made AFTER the Super FX chip in order to make 3D games on the Genesis. Nintendo was ahead of SEGA this time, and even was more successful with this early 3D games than SEGA was.
@HONOR lol sega fanboys are delusional. What did Nintendo in the 90's? Well, at least it got into the 2000's in the console market, unlike Sega hahahaha
Both were jaw dropping for their time. The Genesis version is nothing short of a technical marvel for many differing reasons. First, it showed what a Genesis could do with a GPU addon of its own. Virtua Racing ran at a much higher frame rate than any FX powered game. Secondly, it also showed the Genesis was capable of displaying more colors than the 64 once thought. It blows past that limitation all throughout gameplay. Finally, it proves Sega should have committed to this sweet GPU addon. Personally as much as I love Virtua Racing I think Sega made a huge mistake selling this game first. The price was far too high for a small racing game; However, had they led with Virtua Fighter instead In believe it would have sold like a wildfire...even at a $100 per game. This would have opened the proverbial floodgates for more games that would have invariably brought the price down. I believe the SVP chip could have ran a decent port of Doom with a little TLC. In 1993, 1994...I would have easily paid $200 for the chance to play a Doom on a console...oh wait I did. I got a Jaguar in 1994 just for that purpose.
@purwantiallan5089 What?! PS5 games (are on Blu-ray disc and digital not cart) cost anywhere from $30.00 for a budget title to $70.00 for normal releases. Atari Jaguar games at times were well over the $60.00 price range (which was high) as it used carts. Cartridges from the time they were introduced (1976- Fairchild Channel F) all the way to present cost more money to make than any other format ever conceived. Laserdisc was a close second as that was incredibly niche. Addendum- I know all of this because I started gaming in 1986 with the Nes and Master System. I am still a gamer today that plays everything across all platforms, genres, and generations of gaming. We (fiancee and I) also happen to have the Xbox Series X, PS5, Switch, and a Steam Deck.
Funny to see people still fighting 25 years later over which console is better. I say both consoles compliment each other well. And surely we can all agree that the two together marked what was a golden age in home console gaming.
increible hasta donde pudo llegar el sega genesis, obviamente la version de 32x se ve mejor pero la de genesis normal lleva la consola hasta los limites gracias a la ayuda del sega virtua chip :)
WOW!! I was sitting here with my jaw on the floor watching the regular Sega version. I never heard of the SVP chip until after I read through the comments.
If Sega used arcade ports like this the primary focus of the 32X cartridge line the add-on would've done better commercially as well as critically. With how good Virtua Racing Deluxe looked and played, it would've been entirely plausible to have a respectable 32X port of Daytona USA. The problem was Sega didn't learn from their mistakes regarding the Sega CD, and it's mainly about what made the Genesis so good....it's all about the games.
I LOVE the Genesis version of this game ... I played the shit out of it. The moment I booted the game the very first time and say the SEGA logo come into view, I was like, "Fuck yeah!" I even like the little clips of music throughout the race. It was like getting a little boost of adrenaline to get you to the next check point.
Yes it is, but thats not the impressive part. The impressive thing is that the Genesis can run this game at ALL. and the fact it looks how it does is a tech marvel to this day.
@@nicholastobolski1106 it still doesn't make it all that impressive. It's lower fps and checkerboard textures make it a tough sell when you decide which version to play. x32 is pretty much the arcade perfect considering the limitations and plays just fine while the Genesis one is kind of meh. Never liked it.
In my opinion they added more chips in Genesis version compared to the 32X this is why back in those days the Genesis version was so pricey than the 32x when it was released.
All i can imagine is rhe svc chip being a lock and cart and many games being released. Like daytona usa, virtua cop, street fighter alpha, virtua fighter 2, doom

If you can't afford a 32X then the Genesis port is a good way to enjoy this game but of course the 32X version is better overall and also has a lot of exclusive content! On a side note, in terms of "merit", I'd say it's kinda on par: the 32X might have more horse power and all but it still partly works with the Genesis while on other hand the Genesis port resorts to the powerful SVP chip so, all things considered, both versions are equally impressive.
TIME BONUS! ahh Feels. Really good comparison. Genesis did great with how smooth it was. When you get the birds eye view, it's struggling so much. Feel for ya 16bit genesis
They should have produced VR Racing, the Genesis Version, on a two part cartridge. So the 3d Chip cartridge could support future games. After VR Racing sellings they could had offer the the 3D Part Cartridge as add on without game for a good price. Imagine the games posible with this.
I have thought about this myself, and while it's a good idea .. the 32x literally was that but the issues there were ... twice the price of say vr on megadrive for the hardware alone at around £150 An extra psu to deal with and more cables 32x games still around £10 more expensive than megadrive games, megadrive £40 - 32x £50-£55 And most importantly, the games didn't sound good and the graphics jump wasn't worth the cost,it was an expensive upgrade I bought one way back, owned 3 games for it and I loved it but even i knew that most wouldn't pay silly money for it when the saturn was already known about and the talk on the street was all about Sony new console and the next gen .. lol 32bit consoles coming But going back to your idea, yeh .. I agree, imagine if sega had done a kind of sonic knuckles style cart with the vdp built in there to save money !! Then you buy virtua racing cart to play on it With such a cool cart that sega had already produced, you would think the logic would have just clicked but somehow sadly no one thought about it
Genesis alone: Heavy dithering, low poly cars, no shading based on face direction. 32X Upgrade: No dithering(?) Higher polygon count per-car, Polygons shaded based on face direction, sound quality enhanced.
This game is one of the reasons why I think the creation of the 32X was useless, and one of the mistakes of SEGA before the Saturn, despite it being just an add-on. The Genesis had enough horse power to generate games such as Virtua Racing, and many more that had 3D aspects in a 16-bit system.
The 32x was a nice piece of hardware, but my goodness what an entirely useless thing to come out with right before the Saturn came out. Either release a 32x or release a Saturn, but not both.
I reference often the 32x could have been a NeoGeo contender with arcade ports at a cheaper pricepoint for the system and possibly games unless they needed to plug in more memory. The arcade ports held up well and could have been near perfect if they utilized the hardware to the max.
The 32x definitely looks better, but the mega drive is way more impressive, and let’s not forget it wasn’t on a stillborn platform. Also the music is better on the mega drive in my opinion.
Stunning game. I've always had very little patience for games which aren't immediately playable and intuitive when you first pick up a controller and have a bash, so this is absolutely perfect for people like me who are more in to casual gaming. I love the fact that the pace is constantly fast and furious, nothing hinders your thrill too much. It doesn't punish you too much when you make a mistake, you take a hit but you don't have to wait until a boring, elaborate, time consuming crash sequence has played out to get back in the action. Okay, so it's not realistic in that sense, but I'm happy with that because I think some games overdo it and it ruins your fun. The game is tough to master, but very easy to play. Just the way I like it. I've got both these versions, because I'm a big romset collector (sshhh!!!), and I'd say that they're both excellent. The differences between the two are actually not major. The only real compromise in the Mega Drive version is the drop in graphics resolution, which isn't massive, I don't think you'd be at all disappointed if that's the version you owned as a kid. It's a massive achievement on the 16-bit. But the 32x version is really the obvious choice if you're able to pick between the two.
32X easily. As cool as it might seem to have VR running on the Genesis, think about the fact that it cost $100. Yes, $100, almost as much as the 32X unit for one game. I loved Virtua Racing in the arcade but both this and the 32X unit were huge mistakes. It was a very ambitious move by Sega but Nintendo decided to go with a chip that wasn't so expensive to make the games unaffordable to the masses, which is why Starfox, Yoshi's Island, and other games with add-on chips were successful.
$100 quite justified by the SVP inside the cartridge and the overall good result as a port of one of the most advanced arcade games at that point. Quite the opposite to the SuperGrafx which not only was very expansive as a console but its games too and for hardly any reasons overall since it's just a PC Engine with a few video modifications and its games barely differ to regular PC Engine games other than a few parallax and less flickering (but still quite a lot of flickering as seen in Aldynes), NOW that's lame, as usual with NEC stuff.
Oh and yeah, I know that you talked about the SNES, but it was worth mentioning about the SuperGrafx. And, anyway, the SNES too was a bit of a scam since the system + its games were more expansive than Genesis counterpart while not being any better, just different. Then sure if you add a Sega CD and a 32X cost becomes higher on Genesis side but for good reasons (even if, sadly enough, the 32X had a short commercial lifespan but it still has a competent library, but damn if only it stayed longer and therefore we could have see stuff such as the planned Castlevania on it...)
Well, the SNES was technically superior in many ways. More colors (64 x the color palette and 4 x more colors on screen at once), more backgrounds (max 4 instead of just 2... well, most SNES games used 3 BGs in Mode 1), hardware scaling through mode 7, more sprites available on screen (80 on Genesis / Mega Drive vs 128 on SNES, though technically hard to master due to the CPU), bigger sprites possible (max 64 pixels = double the size in comparison to the mega drive / genesis), a way more advanced soundchip , 8 DMA channels instead of only 1 and so on. It's impressive what Sega got out of the machine due to pure computation with the CPU, but after all, the SNES was technically more advanced. And it wasn't much more expensive either. The price tag was 50 USD higher, but it also came with a second controller and a AAA game. I had both systems back in the days and still play them today.
Tbh the 32x version just has slightly sharper graphics I know theres 2 stages added but why not enchance the graphics a little more as the 32x/genesis can handle it
WRONG... Mega was not like that.. in fact it was like the 32x you showed here.. there is a problem on your video causing the Mega version to distorts with black pixels that arent on the original...
That's a pity they did not distributed the SVP chip separatly from the game, like à game genie. It would have been reusable. Oh wait ! That's some kind of 32X. SEGA's strategy was not consistent.
The 32X version is better but i consider the 32X as cheating in terms of upgrading because it uses it's own a/v out csble. I still wish sega opted for a svp device instead,no misleading,no high price like the 32X system.
Sega thought about making a SVP cart at first, so you'd only have to pay once for the chip to use it with different games. You'd put the game cartridge on top of it like one of those converters for playing Japanese MD games on a Genesis. If they did that, I guess it would have been maybe $60, with games for the module being $50 each. It may well have been better to bring that out than a 32X- with the 32-bit consoles coming up, $60 would have been easier to take than $159.
32x is objectively superior, but Megadrive version has much more merit... running something like this in a 16 bit machine is just incredible. My vote to the Megadrive version! xD

I bought one way back, owned 3 games for it and I loved it but even i knew that most wouldn't pay silly money for it when the saturn was already known about and the talk on the street was all about Sony new console and the next gen .. lol 32bit consoles coming
But going back to your idea, yeh .. I agree, imagine if sega had done a kind of sonic knuckles style cart with the vdp built in there to save money !! Then you buy virtua racing cart to play on it
With such a cool cart that sega had already produced, you would think the logic would have just clicked but somehow sadly no one thought about it
Genesis alone: Heavy dithering, low poly cars, no shading based on face direction. 32X Upgrade: No dithering(?) Higher polygon count per-car, Polygons shaded based on face direction, sound quality enhanced.
Nobody told me the 32X could do THIS.
Nos anos 90 sonhei em ter o cartucho pra Mega Drive.
Sega Genesis Has Nice 3d Polygon How About Vf2 For Sega Genesis its 2d can it run 3d
The right channel is the Genesis and the left is the 32X. I know I'm not being helpful but someone might not have realised.
This game is one of the reasons why I think the creation of the 32X was useless, and one of the mistakes of SEGA before the Saturn, despite it being just an add-on. The Genesis had enough horse power to generate games such as Virtua Racing, and many more that had 3D aspects in a 16-bit system.
Remember this cost £65-70 on the Megadrive (Genesis)
The 32x was a nice piece of hardware, but my goodness what an entirely useless thing to come out with right before the Saturn came out. Either release a 32x or release a Saturn, but not both.
I reference often the 32x could have been a NeoGeo contender with arcade ports at a cheaper pricepoint for the system and possibly games unless they needed to plug in more memory. The arcade ports held up well and could have been near perfect if they utilized the hardware to the max.
Amazing video! can you xbox one vs Android Phone in minecraft?
音声が左右逆…
For those unaware, this game costed $100.
The 32x definitely looks better, but the mega drive is way more impressive, and let’s not forget it wasn’t on a stillborn platform. Also the music is better on the mega drive in my opinion.
Bro the genisis is doing things that give Starfox a run for its money!
Señor Snipey well in both cases extra hardware chips is doing the work.
As far as graphics for Virtua Racing go,
PS2 version > Arcade version > Sega Saturn version > 32X version > Sega Genesis version
Paul Davis you are fucked in the head.
@@magnumforcemopar402 hes right btw
Switch now hands down best version.
Virtua Racing on Genesis WINS.
Wrong.
Williams + McLaren = Senna 😢
If sega did the same as nintendo throwing add chips into their cartriges
that was Rad!😁
Didn't think the machine was so great in terms of graphics and the two console versions look really bad.
Benchmark for Sega Mega Drive? yes
Should you show a Sega Saturn running this? Definetely not!!!
There were far better examples of racing games like this on the saturn. Daytona USA springs to mind
Got the MD version but I still think its over rated.
yikes … rather play mario kart
The 32X version is better but i consider the 32X as cheating in terms of upgrading because it uses it's own a/v out csble.
I still wish sega opted for a svp device instead,no misleading,no high price like the 32X system.
You do realize the vr cart was 100 bucks while the 32x was 159.
SNES is better than genesis
GENESIS is better than Snes.
