Mitch is a rare counter tenor which means he can sing up to soprano. They have the widest vocal range I believe and is considered rarest of all vocal types. Add to that mitch already having a unique voice that's so pure and angelic and his love absolute mastery of that voice and knowledge of music and you have a powerhouse. If they all sang at full power at same time rather than at lower levels to allow each members solos i think mitch would blow them all put of the water. Yes, hes my fave.

Scott does the bass notes when Matt (or Avi) is singing. Pretty amazing. He can go falsetto, too! And Kevin, the beat-boxer ----have you heard him sing yet? Or play the cello? An amazing group of talent.
To hear kevin do some cello ( and beatboxing at the same time) check out Radioactive ( feat Lindsey Sterling) or Shallow. There's also Papaoutai ( Strome cover) with Lindsey Sterling and Kevin on his cello Beyonce. Kevin aslo has his own channel (KO) where he plays cello, beatboxes, does keyboard and sings all looped.

@@catherinetodd5163, yes Scott is technically a barritone, but he can do bass as well...not as low as Avi or Matt can, but he does take over the bass when either Avi or Matt are singing a verse.

I have watched almost 1,000 PTX reactions...of those, I'd guess 150, have been to The Sound of Silence. You are the ONLY person I have seen that mentioned Kirsten's background vocals when Scott starts to sing his ending solo. She is absolutely incredible when she's doing that. So pleased to see someone else caught it.

I will always miss Avi but Matt just kills it on this one. He is really talented and had the extremely unfair task of taking over for one of, if not the most popular members of the group but he really has done an amazing job.

5 people 1 wall of sound, it's what they do better than anyone! All I can do is shake my head in wonder and joy most of the time. I want to thank Paul Simon for writing one of the greatest songs ever!! Every version is just stunning. This has so much emotion. I always looked at it as Simon and Garfunkle were the alarm, Pentatonix is the warning and Disturbed is the tolling of the arrival. Just amazing.

I love seeing how you get all excited by greatness. I hesitate to say which artist or performers are best, but I’m pretty comfortable saying that this is the best cover of this song ever. It’s their song now, turn out the lights, party over, time to go go home.

What you said about zeroing in on one person and enjoying their part is true. Being a Pentaholic, I've listened to this and every one of their songs hundreds of times, and I still enjoy filtering out the sound to understand what each exceptional talent is doing. If you're thinking about reacting to Christmas songs, you should include the Pentatonix covers of "Mary Did You Know" and "O Come All Ye Faithful". I don't know (or care) whether you are religious or not, but we'll hear Christmas songs anyway so we might as well listen to some really good ones. For Kevin playing cello, try "Say Something" (remember tissues), and I'll second the vote for "Can't Hold Us". For one of their grammy awards, try "Daft Punk (Medley)". For more acappela, don't miss Home Free (more country) and/or VoicePlay (more roleplaying). But beware, all three are big (but excellent) rabbit holes to fall down.

A few others have mentioned a bit, but just so you are aware of their ranges: Scott is a baritone that fills in on bass when the bass singer is taking lead, but he can also do high tenor (falsetto); Mitch is a counter-tenor (male equivalent to a female soprano, basically). They say he's a once in a generation talent. His range is RIDICULOUS! Nearly 7 octaves; Kirstie is a soprano who has a 6+ octave range...insane!; Matt is their bass (replacing Avi in 2017), but can reach the tenor range. His tone is so clear! Then, of course, there's Kevin. He's a prodigy. He's the only member who has 'perfect pitch', and he's a tenor. His vocal range isn't as wide as the others, but man when he sings...he also plays the cello in some of their songs, while he beatboxes, and plays the saxophone and many other instruments. You really should check out his cover of Down. It's sick!

Once again, such a fun reaction! I just got back from a Carnival cruise, so we had to switch our phones to Airplane mode the whole time. As a result, I couldn’t access my beloved PTX for an entire week. Once we got into port and I switched back, however, yours was the first lovely face on my YT feed! It was such a nice little “Welcome Home” video for me to watch. Thank you!

Great reaction. Suggest you listen to Pentatonix "The Prayer "next. One of the best PTX performances. Then you will be ready for some of their original songs leading to a near endless supply of Christmas songs. Have fun! The Pentaholics will be right there with you.
In all honesty, it's almost impossible to pick a best voice among them...in.my opinion, when they came together, they found a way of doing Acapella unlike any other Acapella group l've ever heard! I mean even when they started on the singoff, the boyz-2-men judge even said he was taking notes! They blew out everyong else on that show by more than a mile! You could even tell all the other groups were visibly helpless coz they ALL new Pentatonix was gonna win! Their arrangements and attention to detail is what sets they completely apart from every other Acaplle group l've ever heard! It's almost like they do Aca-magic & the results are always 100% eargasm!!!

When I listen, I hear Kirsten supporting Mitch up high and vice versa. Also Scott supports those highs with almost Tenor range. Their wonderful arrangements are augmented by their wonderful precision.

Disturbed.... David Draimans voice is phenomenal. It is by far my favorite cover tune of all time. It has some grit and grime to it.

Not many recommend the hauntingly beautiful original 'Run to you'. No beat boxing, just beautiful harmonies. To get you bouncing in your seat there is always '90's medley' or 'Sing'. Then 'Carol of the bells' to highlight Mitches clear bell tones, 'Say Something' to highlight Kirsten's abilities. 'Mr.Grinch' to show off Matts abilities. Avi is on a pedestal of his own and his solo work, especially 'Change on the rise' is a testament to his talent. Scott features heavily in most of what they do, but doesn't get as much mention as the others, despite his amazing range, because I'd voice seems to be more 'normal', as if.

You should check out The Prayer and their newest song (released about a month ago) called Praywrs for this world. Their tour starts November 17th in Oakland, you should see if they have any dates near you.
If you like Scotts bass you should check out Voiceplay and Home free. Scott is an amazing singer cause he does have that large singing range. I have noticed the best bass singers have huge ranges and can sing both lead and back up.
Mello , great review. The backdrop played a bit part in this cover too. PTX is very deft at slipping in side comments, wild wardrobe, an African beat here and there. It adds to the fun of listening to their songs. Here, because this is a dire, drastic future type song, that lone light in the background, to me, is saying “there’s still hope”. Looking forward to your next choice.

You may notice that Kirsten's vibrato is different from her earlier singing. It seems a bit more developed. I believe they did "Sounds of Silence" after they did their "Jolene" colab with Dolly Parton. I think Dolly may have given her some ideas. Eventually when you get into the depths of Music and learn about Vocalizing you learn the different Vocal Types for both Men and Women. Scott is a Bass-Baritone, meaning he's a Baritone that has the Range to sing down to Bass, but his Range is big. Matt and Avi are Bass, meaning they can sing even Lower, but usually Bass Singers have a massive Range, that's usually how it is the Lower a person's Voice is because the Vocal Cords are so thick, it can stretch more. Kevin, the Beatboxer is a Tenor, in my own words I would say that Tenor is one of the most balanced Voices as some Tenors can either sing really High, some can sing a little deeper down into Baritone and some are more smack dab in the middle. Kirstin is a Mezzo-Soprano, Mezzos are similar to Sopranos, but their Voice has more Weight and Darkness to it allowing them to sing deeper compared to a Soprano. Lastly, Mitch is what you would refer to as a Countertenor, or a Male Alto or Male Soprano, most Countertenors are actually Baritones or Tenors at their core, this would be Trained Countertenors, people who Trained in Singing the roles of Women, this is a bit more common in Operatic Music rather than Contemporary Music, Mitch is a Natural Countertenor, his Voice is just Naturally that high. The Countertenor Vocal Type is the Rarest Vocal Type for Men to have.

Don't go to one of their concerts unless you are capable of standing for the entire concert, even though there are seats provided. Their PR person tells the audience that Pentatonix likes it when the fans stand and engage (whatever the hell that means). I was at one of their concerts in Hollywood years back and I have a problem with standing for long periods of time which causes lower back, knee, and ankle pain. I ended up watching the entire concert thru the cracks between the people standing in front of me while I had to sit (the entire concert). I would not do that again.
