tbh, my first thought when I watched this movie was how badly Nick prepared Rachel I feel angry at him
Yes he grated on me, he seemed so dismissive and "oh everything is sunshine and rainbows dear". In reality bad blood between Rachel and Eleanor would get worse and Nick's blindness would cause major issue in their marriage
I know right?! He should have said, "hun , I love you lots and there's something I should tell you. My mom is old money and doesn't like hugs and she's a tiger mom...
A perfect example of that is the scene where the girls that are getting massages with Rachel, start bullying her hard core and gutted a fish on her bed. Meanwhile, he’s peacefully sitting on a chair, chatting with the other guy about his fantasies with Rachel.
This happened to my friend when he introduced his Canadian girlfriend to his family in Hong Kong. The first meeting was awkward but things eventually worked out.The cultural gap is huge even between Asian Chinese and emigrated Chinese and we are not aware of that. Something we know as common sense in Asia is not necessarily known by second generation Chinese.
@@misssmisssymaria Welll if you know its rachel that didn't want to tell anyone about it in the first place
My advice to non asian. If you date with asian guy and meet his family never hug them especially his mother. In asian way we introduce ourself with sweet smile and very polite and then shaking hand.
...u mean bow?
@@christinechon2464 its for japanese and muslim consorvertive (if opposite gender). Lot of asian they shaking hand or like this 🙏 (for indian, pakistani, bangladesh, and also malaysian and indonesian conservative muslim), turkey they put their hand on their chest.
For eleanor young perspective rachel is a rude girl. She shouldnt hug her. She should shaking hand not hug. But i dont blame her because she was raise in western cultural while elanor is chinese woman who hold chinise cultural and values highly. In this movie rachel get cultural shock.
@@sitikhadijah-co4fd Exactly; All Asia's parts have these similarities. My wife is Javanese and every time I meet my dad/mother in law, I need to slightly bow down doing the hand-kissing gestures. And even I have to speak with a much lower tone whenever her dad/mom is in the discussion.
@@sitikhadijah-co4fd yea exactly, in thai culture, greetings are different than Muslim cultures and chinese cultures, I'm saying because shes chinese, the proper greeting would be a bow
@@doko980629 we malay also bow and kissing elders hand. If the younger not do this they will consider as rude or ungratefull child
everything eleanor says here sounds sarcastic - if i were rachel i would have cried right after LMAO
she knows it. That's why she said "she hates me" in the end. And her responses are polite responses to sarcasms.
You’ll be surprised at how strong you can be when this happens

Pursuing one's passion is what Nick's grandfather did, how American !
Everything good seems American to everyone, just American hangover...
... are Americans the only one that do this lol
@@jdoubleM_1019 yes! In the East. You always listen to your family and if you don’t it’s consider disrespectful. So if you wanna be a singer but they want you to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or take over the family business then you’re doomed. You can still your passion on the side but pursuing it full time? Good luck. I mean, they’re are people who don’t really care but generally the culture is like that
@@modernretro10 Unfortunately, All of this is true. 😞
Maybe the bad idea of following ones passion is applied only to women.
She ain't shy at all. She just gave her a hug.
Everyone else was introducing her with a hug, I’m pretty sure she thought that’s what they do because she literally just said she’s still learning lol
The cousins like astrid were probably studied in Europe or America and less conservative, thats why they hug Rachel cuz they knew she is from the western, meanwhile nick’s mom is an old conservative Chinese mom and in some asian countries, we don’t usually hug people that we just met, especially our future mother in law
I’m kinda pissed that Nick didn’t really take the time to teach her the proper customs and how to behave accordingly, so she could fit in. He was so out of touch.
I’m also pissed that Rachel was supposed to be an economics professor, yet they dressed her like a little girl.
I guess the team wanted to show how fearless Rachel was compared to everyone else who too afraid to do anything. Still mad that he didn’t tell her how mean the girls were though, especially his ex!
Are professors supposed to dress a certain way? I think you forgot the dichotomy they’re trying to create between the two upbringings: one who grew up poor and relies on much more functional and cost-efficient wear and another who was likely styled in the most expensive, trendy fashion and is aware of keeping up social appearances. Especially when you grow up in a lifestyle, people are not aware that their way of life is different than others, which is likely why Nick does not think to explain to Rachel the inner workings of the rich. He seemed pretty oblivious to her feelings for most of the movie and did not stop to think that his unspoken customs would be burdensome to someone not in that circle.
@@butterflybird46 Yeah, professors are supposed to dress a certain way. Her character was supposed to be fearless, independent, and strong, yet her wardrobe said the complete oposite.
This is a common lazy movie plot -- Joe comes from a finicky culture with lots of cultural rules, but he doesn't teach his gf any of them and is shocked. . SHOCKED that the gf messes up. Same thing happened in the Joy Luck Club with the genders switched -- when the white dude met the Asian lady's family and made huge gaffes because the gf never bothered to tell him the basics of what is rude vs polite!
I was going to agree with your comment until you criticized her outfit. She's a woman in a beautiful dress, how is that being dressed like a little girl? Was she supposed to go meet her man's mother in a pair of slacks and a white button-down shirt?
It’s a bit of culture shock for me
in my Mexican culture we HAVE to hug and kiss(in the cheek) to even friends who are meeting the family for the first time
lol yup. Always hugging.
Ugh being mexican as a little kid who doesn't speak or understand proper Spanish was crazy because all your family does is hug and point at you and your like hsjjdjdjej ig?
No they don’t.
@@anonymoushuman8443 ?. I don't get what you are saying, mexican culture is very different in different states. It might be different for you like Yucatan culture is different than Oaxaca, don't be a jerk. Its Christmas Eve!!!
Almost all Latin America has the same culture of hugging and kissing in one cheek (mejilla) or in 2 depending on the country,
Michelle Yeoh was perfectly cast.
she is Malaysian .proud of her.
She's just great, anyways.
Michelle Yeoh is perfectly cast for everything she was and will ever be in. She commands everything she's in.
I'm African-American in my husband is Puerto Rican. When I first met his mother I shook her hand. I feel a hug is a bit much for someone you just met.
If she was Puerto Rican you probably could have hugged her and did a cheek kiss and she’d still be nice, especially if her son wants her too!
@Dolores Medina It depends, it depends......
Michelle is still so gorgeous 😍💘
Yes she is! 😍

Ah. Do people in the US hug people whom they're meeting for the first time? As an Indian, I couldn't help feeling a bit awkward at the scene. We hug people whom we actually know. Hugging a complete stranger simply as a greeting feels very strange (giving a grand hug to someone as a way of sharing happiness, to make someone feel loved, even if they are a stranger, will be taken positively in India. But hugging as a way of greeting someone when you only just met them is an alien concept to us).
Yeah, down in South Texas Hispanics kiss each other on the cheek and hug when meeting.
@@annagarcia1527
Do they do that even when they're meeting for the first time? In India, hugging and kissing signify very close bonds (not necessarily romantic) which is possible only when you know the other person. It is interesting how different cultures have very different attitudes about these things.
@@shivampatnaik2000 Yup, meeting for the first time and everything. Handshakes seem to formal. Even then my 90 year old Mexican grandma would probably invite you to eat and make homemade flour tortillas , rice and beans. I went to visit a friend in Arkansas and her white( no offense) were surprised i was hugging every relative.
@@annagarcia1527
Your grandma sounds like a lovely person. Many people in India are exactly the same. They'd invite you to their home and offer you home cooked food at the very first meeting. It's just that this entire process takes place without the involvement of hugs and kisses the very moment you meet them. But no one would find it odd if you hugged them while leaving. The elderly may plant a kiss on your forehead as well (kisses aren't exchanged between two people of the same generation or from a person from a younger generation to a person from an older generation).
@@shivampatnaik2000 texas is awsome to visit if you ever get a chance to go! Have a great day!
I love this scene, all conservative parents are like Nick's mom, my grandparents were very strict and quiet very reserved. They expected a hand-shake (mano) and a small head bow. They only hugged and kissed at their grandchildren. Awe my heart so much nostalgia
There is something about Michelle yeoh that just ooze grace what ever role she takes
Lol you dont just go and hug someone in Asia.
Bruh I havent hugged my mom and dad in like 20 years (i'm 25)... and if some chick walks in and tries to do that its going to be very awkward. A smile and "hi" is enough. And ease into the whole "Auntie" thing. Dont just start calling them that from get go.

@Zeke Yaeger You don't hug your parents? That's sad bruh.... where's the love and affection
My heart and my mouth drop to the floor every time she hugs the mom. Never, ever, EVER hug the mom on the first meeting unless she initiates and brings you in herself, especially if she tends to be far more traditional Eastern.

for those who are wondering what Michelle Yeoh says to the chefs at the beginning:
"Put chili in; just for a minute."
"Simmer herbal chicken soup for 'Young Master'."
Eleanor seemed so cold and distant. I get that Rachel overstepped when she hugged her, and Eleanor saw that as a rude thing to do. But Rachel didn't know any better, and she was only being friendly. Personally, I thought Eleanor was being rude when she walked away from her to check on the food while Rachel was talking about her job as an Economic Professor. Eleanor seemed smug when she talked about her "passion" as if she was looking down on women pursuing their dreams, and she was insinuating that the perfect Chinese woman should be traditional and dutiful to her family.
It's always so interesting to see the clash of cultures. In my case, in Spain, it's common to give a small hug and kiss each cheek to someone on the first meeting and sometimes it might even be seen as a bit impolite if you don't do it. However I can definitely see the reasons for the handshake, you still don't know the person, so I guess it makes sense to protect the personal space
Latin culture is very hands-on. I'm half Puerto Rican, so I sort of know the drill, LOL.

First hand embarrassment
Michelle Yeoh is so elegant!
It's interesting to see other customs and cultures, I am a Mexican and we tend to greet each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek (more common from woman to woman)
I might be the one who thinks this would be a good idea but if this film series ever decides to introduce/show Nick's father I think they should cast Chow Yun Fat. And yes put off it is the Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon aspect. But I also think Chow could play a great father.

@@link2442 Oh hell nah
As my mother said to my sister during her wedding no matter how much friendly and loving your mil acts towards you, she must always remember that she is her mother by law and law needs to be obeyed and respected.
But that’s not just someone you met a few seconds ago - this is your significant other’s mom, your mother-in-law to be. I know a lot of cultures are different but I don’t get why most of the people commenting make hugs seem like something embarrassing. I wouldn’t mind hugging my mother-in-law when I meet her in person, but that’s because I was brought up like this(a middle Asian country btw). I know we’re all different but that doesn’t really sit right with me , it’s like y’all are kinda insulting people who tend to hug strangers 🤨

What a place to meet for 1st time introduction --- the Kitchen!!!
I found this scene incredibly smart, because they chose the kitchen for their first encounter. Firstly, it's like a character introduction for Elenore. Since she is the host of the party, she has to work behind the scenes and make everything look perfect and effortless. She is a perfectionist, almost to the level of control freak because she doesn't trust the chef to do it to her standard and nothing ever escapes her eye. So we learn immediately that she is very much in charge of everything. Secondly, the sterile kitchen is an interesting contrast to the warm light of the party. As if they want to say that behind the polite smiles and the glamour, there is fierceness and that keeping up the beautiful exterior requires a lot of work (common knowledge that we sometimes forget). Finally you have the association that the kitchen is the heart of the home (not sure if it's true in Asia, but for a westerner this is the message here) and the mother is in the heart of the home. Rachel was still intoxicated by the glamour of the party, while Elenore was directing the whole operation. When they met it was such a clash.
@@florist7743 You're right. Well analyzed. And it's also a smart idea to have them in the kitchen, so that they are separated from the crowds and can talk without being interfered by un-important characters.
@@kwoo24 so true. If this meeting took place among the guests everyone would try to listen in and spy for gossip. I even more awkward for everybody omg

I agree though. Hugging is a VERY PERSONAL thing. It's an invitation to a very intimate space. So yes - I wouldn't go for a hug. A sweet smile, and a slight nod would be the best here.

People talking about the hug:
It's a freaking movie. The extreme hugging of Rachel is intentional. If writers don't make this scene prominent we wouldn't see a good comedy movie.
even if nick didn't want rachel to see him for his money, the hugging thing wasn't even about his wealth, it's his culture & she shld have taught her about it beforehand
loved Michele Yeoh acting
I come and watch this scene sometimes because it's brilliant. Rachel is emotionally intelligent. You saw how she caught the mother's coldness toward the Ice-breaking at 0:58, so she adapted quickly.
I rarely ever see movie characters like this. 95% of movies (A&B) I saw, the characters are always emotionally-dumb.
I guess Miss young never had someone close to her die. She's judging Racheal's mom for being a single mother, probably very little money and working hard to raise Racheal.
Old money, they most likely haven't had to struggle for generations.
0:40 If they bring in a actor for Nick’s father in a possible sequel I hope it Randall Duk Kim .

In Germany we do hug people when meeting them the first time if they are considered family or are oartners of family. I hugged my bf's mom when meeting her, I hugged all of my siblings new partners when meeting them. You come off as cold and distant if you don't offer a hug in this situation.
They buff Eleanor so hard in the movie. In the book she just a piece of peanut to the whole family

In the Philippines, there's a proper way of greeting called lamano (kissing hands of your elders-- you don't actually kiss the hands... You just tap your forehead with the back of their hand).
Persuing ones passion is a human thing.
Not an American thing.
If your mom or dad think they need to control your life after 18, cut them off. Hands down. Most toxic type of relationships out there.
Not in Asian countries. it's a cultural thing.
cutting off one's family is a Western thing?
I'm Asian and I'm 19 .Theyre controlling me and will still be in the next 4-8 years. And I cant do anything about it.
Pursuing one's passion is reserved for the wealthy (enough) and educated citizens of peaceful countries. Eleanor comes from a culture that has long history of filial piety, shaming as a growth tactic - think like super super tough love, and the idea that life is suffering. It's a cultural privilege to pursue one's passion and still expect to eat.
It is an American thing or a West thing. In other countries, you hardly see people studying things like Art or creative writing like some of you do. In lost countries, with people of color we settle for things that’ll guarantee us a job
