    Excellent tips. I am a life long spelunker myself. On the topic of flashlights. Make sure if you only take 2 lights that they are quality and proven dependable. Today's led lights dollar store or harbor freight lights are not a good choice. I always carry a quality headlamp, a bright flashlight and a cheapy backup and carry replacement batteries for all of them. Its also a good idea to practice changing your flashlights batteries in the dark.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283

      Excellent advice. I am usually with one or more companions and all should have several lights. Underground it is impossible to see without them.

    Bring more than one backup light. 3 or 4.

      Yep. In addition, if more than one person has more than one light, the number goes up quickly. I almost never go underground alone.

      Old comment but someone might read it and my reply and it might help, I know nothing about mines but in my safety training for confined spaces and carried lighting suggest to also carry a final backup chemical light. They dont weight much or take up much room and might be just enough to get out or help rescue find you.

    The most dangerous snakes in all the world live in a big den on Capitol Hill, DC. There you will find hundreds of them writhing in a ball. I have more respect for the ones in your mine.
    Great video. I tend to stay out of old mines due to my inexperience. I thought MSHA would nail a person caught underground without certification?

      New Zealand is such a beautiful country. I have always wanted to visit, but never had the money. Someday...
      BTW, have you ever read Robert Heinlein's book 'Tramp Royale'? It is about the round the world trip he and his wife took in the 1950's. I was quite surprised at his terrible experience there, especially as it is so well reported on now.
      I agree with the DC snake pit.

    Great advise and tips! I think I would invest in a self rescuer (SCSR) in addition to the other equipment.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283
      @hardrockuniversity7283  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 'self rescuer' in mining terms is a belt mounted catalytic converter that keeps CO from your lungs during a fire. It has no supply of oxygen. A self contained breathing apparatus would be different. Probably different industries have the same nickname for different products.

It is especially disorienting because the angles are never 90 degrees and things go up and down also. If it is big, you sure need to take pracautions to avoid getting lost.

    Excellent video as are all that you have made. I commend you for taking the time, and cost to produce these for all of us. New and old.I can appreciate the dangers of the southwest. I have hunted there several times for javelina and bear. In 1986 I hunted the high plains desert. The hunt which I wrote a story about, and called "The Great Bear Hunt of 1986", ended up being known to my partner and I as the "Desert Death March of 1986", as and error in judgement put my friend and I a mile into the wilds, dehydrated without water. To the point that our tongues were swollen, and we had to pull them away from the roof of our mouth. We could only walk about 20-30 feet without resting. This came about from a night of vomiting and diarrhea after using a coral snake for a fly swatter, and my friend loosing his canteen after tripping and injuring his knee. I had drank all my water within 100 yards of the cabin because of the dehydration. Other notable points on the hunt were when I killed a Mohave Green Rattlesnake with a pocket knife, being stung by a small translucent scorpion on my big toe when I stepped outside to brush my teeth, tarantulas in our truck, a black widow nest under my bunk, and my buddy having his hair stand on end when lightening struck a scrub tree about a 100 yards away. A fantastic story I know. But true it is. I even have the rattlesnake mounted and sitting on my bookcase.

      I think it turned out well, but the editing took 10 hours! First I had to write the script, then dictate it, then break it up into the timeline with headers, and THEN go through all my library of videos and photos and stitch them together. You know what was really frustrating? In all the video I have taken, I couldn't find any good shots of unstable rock or major 'slough' like we saw in the Gertie Riddle. I guess I just never focused on that. Had a great spot from the mine south of here, but it was just out of view in the video. DRAT!
      Keith

    • @jdeluisa
      @jdeluisa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few bat issues. About 50% of all bats carry rabies and you can catch it from breathing aerosolized urine in areas where there are large numbers of bats. Getting rabies vaccine is a good idea if you are around them often. It is a 3 shot series that is quite expensive. I received my vaccinations when I was about 20 and would have to draw a titer to see if I am still immune. I was vaccinated at the time because I was caving a lot at the time.
      Next is histoplasmosis which is a fungal type pneumonia from an organism that lives in quano, pigeon shit, etc.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283

      Thanks Jason,
      I know your expertise on health matters and would recommend that everyone take your advice seriously. I'll see about modifying the video when I get the chance. Too bad TH-cam doesn't have a way to update a video, you apparently have to take it down and replace it with a new one and lose all the views and comments.
      DRAT!

The precise taste and psychogenic effects of such beverages are highly idiosyncratic and I suspect extensive research by each individual would be necessary to properly calibrate the correct blend to maximize the positive effects.

    Found an abandoned mineshaft a couple thousand feet above Ophir Utah. Entrance was visually eroding as we slipped in, and was just wide enough to fit through. Tunnel had what looked like very old dynamite with long fuses, kart tracks, collapsed supports, gigantic icicles, and many different pathways to different tunnels. Walked out for about 10 minutes and saw no sign of the tunnel coming to an end.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283

      Man! I could have filmed the whole video there. STAY AWAY FROM THE DYNAMITE. One touch could be your last. You should report it to local law enforcement so they can dispose of it properly before someone else touches it.

    We have two mines with bad air. It's near the ends of both haul tunnels a little over 1,700 ft. back.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283
      @hardrockuniversity7283  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ventilation is the only answer. 1700 feet is a long way to pump air over time, but can they be connected and one used as an exhaust tunnel while the other is intake? If so, a simple bulkhead and a fan at the portal to the exhaust tunnel would be the final solution. During construction, you might rent appropriate equipment to provide safe air. Exhaust raises are a common alternative.

      No, they are not Mojaves. I think they are called black tailed rattlesnakes. They are more social and not as aggressive. They are apparently relatively common. The diamond pattern is not as precise as many rattlesnakes and the tails are all black from the cloaca to the rattle.

    Although I certainlty can see how those 10 things you mentioned in theory could be a fatal risk, I wonder how much of them are practical risks, as in, do you know of them actually having caused fatalities? Like whats the chance of someone encountering ancient sticks of dynamite or blasting caps and accidentally setting them off?

    • @hardrockuniversity7283
      @hardrockuniversity7283  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have encountered explosives in old mines. It was degraded and I called the authorities and we destroyed it safely. One person contacted me and said he knew a really good mine, but that there was a full powder magazine inside so he would not tell anyone or try it himself. In a case like that the only reasonably safe thing to do would be to set charges without disturbing the 1-2 tons of unstable explosives and blow everything to bits and probably seal the mine. He never told me what he did.
      Rattlesnakes are common in the old mines near Arivaca where many of my videos are made. Look up the "Arivaca King Mine, AZ" on google earth and the middle opening probably has a five or six foot rattlesnake sunning himself, if a bit small to see from space. The recent video about "Bud's Mine" was filmed in a mine reputed to have bad air when the barometric pressure would change.
      Hard to give relative probabilities, but the dangers are quite real. Luckily most are easily avoided if you know what to look for.

    Thanks for the information , personally I would not kill a snake if it was no where it could harm me, yet he said if it was not in your way then leave it alone(if you are planning on mining gold or silver from a mine it would be dangerous to let 3 rattle snakes live) he did not promote killing for no reason.

    Actually, the most dangerous snake in the U.S. Southwest is not the Rattlesnake or the Coral Snake, but is actually the Mojave Green whose venom is BOTH Neurotoxic & Hemotoxic - in other words, it has the venom of both the Rattlesnake AND the Coral Snake.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283
      @hardrockuniversity7283  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But the Mojave Green is a sub-species of rattle snake, just as the sidewinder is. And BOTH are darned aggressive. The sidewinder is also the FASTEST snake in America. They can only move about 7.5 MPH, but I can tell you from personal experience that is damned fast when you are back pedaling!

      As a herpetologist, a biologist who studies reptiles, it is obvious you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to snakes. Stick to your supposed area of expertise and stop killing these beautiful animals. Oh yeah. I'm calling you out on your bullshit! I seriously doubt you were "chased" by a sidewinder as they are one of the shyest rattlesnakes and not even close to the fastest snakes. Just look at their body shape and you can tell they aren't built for speed.

    • @hardrockuniversity7283
      @hardrockuniversity7283  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Perhaps you are correct on their speed sir. I assume you are being honest about the herpetologist. I did read that they traveled at about 7.5 MPH max, which is up there with the racers. This video from the Smithsonian Channel
      th-cam.com/video/B3NbPUTD5qA/w-d-xo.html
      says that an African sidewinder can do 18 MPH! Far faster than Google's answer of 10MPH for the Eastern Coachwhip as the fastest snake in North America. I guarantee you, 7.5 is fast enough when you are trying to back away.
      However, I can tell you with assurance, and from personal experience, that they will come TOWARDS you when disturbed, at least some times. I lived in Yuma AZ as a teenager and it was so hot in the summer that we would spend all night outside or in the water during the summers. When hunting for scorpions on the mesa east of town around Araby road South of 32nd st we used to run into sidewinders from time to time at night.
      Just what is your personal experience with American Sidewinders in the wild sir?

    • @hardrockuniversity7283

      In an old coal mine you sure could get gas. In metals mines the usual danger is lack of oxygen. I did mention old explosives at one point didn't I? It was about three years ago I made this. If I didn't, I should re-make it with them in it.

      @doctormcgoveran2194 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardrockuniversity7283 thanks for the response the video was excellent, you did mention the old explosives.I think you have a couple bad underlying assumptions. those mines were profitable and some of the money was spent to maintain them.yet they killed a lot of good people working there with plans and a safety budget and a lot of people around 24/7/365.Your video suggests it is possible to come in the mine, asses the structural integrity of the various supports and jury rig something safe, on one mans hobby budget, and dig around a bit for some samples.On the gases, in a metal mine with wet sulfur compounds you can form sulfuric acid and release a hydrogen gas, it would be a slow formation of the gases they would pocket in a high spot.If you were moving around and got it mixed in a little it could go off from a fire arm. Hydrogen has lower explosive limit of 5% and upper at 95% roughly.I am not saying don't go in a mine, I am saying that is a very high risk behavior. I have a friend named Keith Bull.
