Protect the right to take risks

It is a bit inaccurate to say this is a matter of not being prepared. There is a correlation, but if only highly experienced people were climbing the mountain people would still die. It needs to be acknowledged that there are uncontrollable risks involved with a climb like that.

Do not close anything! If you climb a mountain, you are risking death every time. That is what makes it so exciting. Be prepared or stay home!

If the risk of death is what draws you to the sport, that is a problem.

People can make their own decisions. We don't need the "sheriff" to make our decisions for us.

People need to have the right to take their own risks. That is part of being a responsible adult. It's sad when people die, but it is their responsibility to be prepared before hiking/climbing any mountain, especially this one.

Being in England where our highest peak is just over 3000ft, I have no comprehension of what a 14er is like but people die over here on hikes in the mountains all the time too. I think it’s insane to even think about closing these climbs off though - people just need a proper understanding of exactly how dangerous these things are.

The Alps are the only mountains in Europe that are as high as the Colorado Rockies.

People don't use common sense. They have the attitude "It won't happen to me" even though you can watch video after video here about these trips and wonder if the altitude makes their brains stop functioning at a decent level. Most videos I've seen none of the people use ropes going across the knife edge. I've lived in Colorado all my life and have hiked 14ers but that knife's edge looks nasty.

I've seen some vids where people even walk the knife edge like a balance beam. I had to dislike the vid on principle, not to mention a bunch of others where commenting on how dumb and dangerous that move was. Thin of the wind! The slightest gust is all it takes to make you lose balance.

The problem is, when someone makes a stupid decision sometimes it affects other people. Do you think they leave the dead bodies scattered around the base of the knife edge? Someone has to recover them and that costs money. Why don't you volunteer to pay for the body recovery missions? You sound like the kind of person that would "decide" to drive 100 in a 50 zone, hit another car and then, oh well no problem, it was my decision.

John C When bears, mtn goats, cows and other wildlife dies it is food for scavengers and it decomposes. Nobody has to recover them unless the family chooses to.
