How the ball skips, a physics tale:
when the ball spins as fast as it does in golf it creates a kind of air pocket around the ball, you can imagine this as a soap bubble around the ball. This effect is massivly increased by the dimples on the ball, the surface of the ball is then more like sandpaper creating friction in the air. The reason for this is basically the pressure differences created by the high spin, which creates a form of invisible barrier. The higher the spin/air resistance from the dimples, the "tougher" the barrier gets.
When the ball hits the water the air pocket "pushes" the ball back up in the air. The air being much lighter than the water becomes trapped inbetween the water and the ball and forces the ball back in the air. Its the similar to how a bullet riccochets or a stone skips over water. If the attack angle is to steep in the water, the air pocket is "burst" and the ball sinks immediatly. The closer the angle gets to parallel to the water, the higher the chance it will skip/ less backspin is needed to skip. Think about how a stone wont skip unless you spin it, its the same effect.
If you were to slomo the shot you would see the ball never actually touches the water when skipping.

Now, I just LOVE the Ryder Cup. When it's over, I immediately think 2 years ahead. So, this video had me vibing so hard, all the more because I am German / European. The sounds of people jubilating was spot on, once you let yourself be fooled, you could actually believe this was a real RC. Thank you so much for letting me have that feeling, with so much time before the real one starts. And, Shayler, no way you're not practicing, you are really good at golf.
This was my favorite video since the first video with Sam. Good vibes and something to play for. It was also nice seeing good golfers make some of the horrible shots i make regularly.
