There's so much to say about this game. It's absolutely fantastic.
The storyline is good for an NES game, the characters are memorable and has one of the best endings out of any other game on the platform. The different sequences are all fine tuned to automatically launch this to the top of my favorites.
The music is well done and tastefully used depending on the scenario you find yourself in.
This game is far superior to the original Golgo 13 in my personal opinion.
However, sharpen your map making skills cause you will need it to beat the game. -

58:57 That's the most emotion Golgo has ever shown! Its almost like he's genuinely saddened by the woman's death. Now that's a crazy thought; Golgo having a human side to him.

That cutscene with the skeleton being sniped genuinely freaked me out as a kid. With all the restrictions Nintendo had at the time I wonder how it slipped by when the target audience of games were kids back then.

It's a signature element of the manga and anime. All Japanese would recognize it as essential so that's probably why they lobbied to keep it in.
Remember that Golgo is named after Golgotha, the hill that Christ was crucified on. Death follows Duke Togo wherever he goes.

I'm surprised the Golgo 13 games were released in North America with the license intact. References to manga or anime were usually removed from the North American versions of video games during the 8-bit era (e.g. Dragon Ball/Dragon Power, Fist of the North Star/Black Belt, Anmitsu Hime/Alex Kidd: High-Tech World).

This game used to drive me nuts. I only had Golgo, Gauntlet and Mario Bros. 3 at the time. I played the heck out of Mario and beat it like 5 times. I kept trying to beat this game but the mazes were too hard. A couple turns and you are lost. The manual did help but once it got to the building blowing up that was it. I died ever time. It was fun watching the whole game here. Finally got to see what happens :) thank you!

Jag of Troy , it's a damn shame, too. Also, Master Thief Sugar (which, by the way, is kind of a related spin-off, akin to the Darkwing Duck and DuckTales cartoons, comic books, and video games in the Disney universe, and their relationship, of Golgo 13) almost got a chance to shine on the NES as well, though the game that was to be called Secret Ties kind of was just a ho-hum Ninja Gaiden-type game that wasn't really a standout title in 1991, though its storyline was also a good one and one could also say that it was not only an analogue, but also a derivative, of the real stories that influenced Indiana Jones, as well as being derived from the Allan Quartermaine (of King Solomon's Mines fame) book series, AND that it, along with those other two titles, also influenced the Pitfall, Tomb Raider, and Uncharted franchises, so its contribution was certainly not an underwhelming contribution.

Of the two Golgo 13 titles that we got for the NES, The Mafat Conspiracy was most-certainly the more aesthetically-pleasing game. Its cutscenes were definitely "Ninja Gaiden"-inspired, and much-refined and fine detail work (albeit recycled a lot of the times) was given to the sprites and to all aspects of the gameplay environments. Notice the Arc of Triomphe in the background in Paris, or that Golgo 13 walks with his right hand always in his pocket just like he does in the Mangas to protect his shooting hand? The little things like this make this second adventure a step forward, but the gameplay is sadly shorter and there was a definite downgrade in the narrative storytelling which was a letdown after the video game epic that was TSE. Its narrative was also dated too since in 1990 the Eastern Bloc was all-but no more and the Cold War was ending (even at ten years old I knew that this storyline was behind with the times). But regardless, this game is still a personal favorite of mine that I still love. (Player's note: If you would like an easier time with the Paris Mafat base maze, enter that building through the second door - the first floor maze is simply all the way to the end to the first door and the stairs. This way you bypass the entirety of that maze by going up and around).

Eh...I think they made it clear that he's doing it in return for rescuing him. Besides, typically Duke is sort of a hitman with a heart. He'll do his job for his clients, provided they don't betray him. In this case, James for at least manipulating him. He's an amoral man with little to compensate, but I think they were still true to the way he held on to his own logic for what he does. But that's just how I interpret it.
