I love how the idea of the sins of ancestors was explored here. Should people bear the consequences of their ancestor's wrongdoings, despite having done none of it themselves?
It's an actual question. Some people (kinda woke) actually think one should be responsible for what his or her ancestors did. "You are part of the ruling majority/ or part of a group that once did wrong things, therefore you too, are part of the problem". Moral : Never judge someone based on the attributes of the general categories you put him/her in.
No and why should they? The current generation did nothing wrong, the previous one did. It makes no sense for those in Kaya's generation to suffer for their forbearers' actions.
@@fs400ion It's not so simple. While this isn't directly applicable to AoT, here's an example: Suppose someone steals something valuable from you. They then sell it to someone else. You track down what was stolen from you to the buyer, but the thief is long gone. Should the buyer just give it back to you? The buyer did not know they were doing anything wrong at the moment of buying, and they were just caught in the middle. They'd be losing a large amount of money. On the other hand, it's rightfully yours. It's not an easy question, because either way, one of you WILL have to be the eventual vicitim in this. Now take this idea and apply it to things like slavery and colonization. Slave owners and colonizers stole resources, lives, and wages from their victims, then passed on that wealth and the wealth created from it to their descendants. Those descendants did nothing wrong, but that wealth does not belong to them; it belongs to those descendants of the victims. Now you're getting into the realm of reparations. It's no coincidence that the "first world" countries are almost exactly those that were colonizers, slave owners, and invaders a century ago, and those of the "third world" the colonized, enslaved, and invaded; they now live in a worse country than what could have been had their ancestors not been victimized. Should these current "first-worlders" bear the responsibility of their ancestors' actions? Or should they just be left alone to enjoy the spoils of those actions? Not so simple.
@@f5673-t1h From a personal standpoint your (good) example still would not justify personal hatred of the descendants of the victims against the bourgeois descendants. Therefore acting like a Gabi in that situation would still be stupid, even if your ancestors were the victims. However, I agree that if the descendants of the colonizers dont give a fuck about the current situation of the descendants of the victims of their ancestors then these lucky folks are a problem. Reparation if needed must be collective. No single individual should bear the sins of a system.
