Your Boxing Footwork - 5 Things to Know and Try

  • www.myboxingcoach.com - In this video you are going to learn some very simple principles about your boxing footwork and your boxing stance.
    However, when considered in the right way, these principles will enable you to be adventurous and versatile in making the trade-off between power-based fighting and being mobility based fighting.
    There are 5 things that we cover about the boxing stance:
    1. The relative position of your feet
    2. The angle of the front foot
    3. The posture of the front foot (up or flat)
    4. The posture of the rear foot (up or flat)
    5. The angle of the rear foot.
    Two of these things are absolute, in my opinion non-negotiable, if you want to maximise the effectiveness of your boxing footwork.
    The other three of these things give you the ability to vary your stance depending upon the type of boxing style that you want to adopt.
    And bear in mind, versatility is a huge advantage to the boxer, and that versatility can show itself by change style from minute-to-minute and even second-to-second.
    So, think about these five boxing footwork things. Experiment and try out new configurations to see how things feel and what they do for you.

      Boxing training is such a chore until your feet start to figure it out, then practice gets a lot more fun when your feet do what your brain wants them too

      I agree with all of the above. I tell my guys, out the feet in the right place and the hands will follow. What's the point in punching hard when you can pivot away or can't balance etc

      Exactly!!! All the focus has always been on the hands but it should be put instead on the foundation(feet)

    Foot work is probably the most neglected aspect of fighting. The vast majority of fans doesnt have any understanding of it. I hope your videos help educating as many people as possible.

    Fran, I love your channel. Excellent no nonsense and easy to understand approach for the beginner and even experienced fighter.
    Having been involved in the game for most of my life I can honestly say that this is the most important topic. I actually suplimented my boxing with karate for years and the reason was that karate footwork on the balls of your feet is paramount to the in-out style of fighting they have. Keep it up bud

    I agree on not breaking guidlines...but most importantly I want to thank you for what you do. My 17 year old son is on his way to overcoming thyroid cancer completely. His vocal cords were paralyzed in the thyroidectamy 2 years ago. He has limitations to his breathing But because of your videos I am able to help him learn boxing which he loves. This is one of the reasons why his health is exponentially improving as he has a outlet to better his physical being. He is constantly improving his cardio and can now go so many more rounds when we spare at parks with head gear and all. My knowledge is very basic but through the gift of your experience we have come along way. You have created an opportunity for us to better our lives. I thank you for this.     In my combat sports gym, they pretty much only give boxing/Muey Thai cardio lessons. These videos are more useful to me. The reason I go there is because of the serious jiu-jitsu they teach there. Which I go to at least 3 times a week. But I train myself striking with the heavy bag there. These videos help with my footwork, which is useful because my bjj professor knows that fights start on their feet and for warming up makes us do shoulder touching boxing spars.

    Hi coach! To comment on another video you posted in the past about the front foot pointing forward. I believe I have seen someone explain that it allows faster forward movement, particularly when jabbing. The stance is seen much in fencing. I do agree with you however, that the loss of balance is significant.

    Coach can you make a dedicated video talking about the stance at 5:20 ?
    I'm talking about the one where the rear foot is pointing at probably 120 - 135 degree. Does the front and rear heel alignment still holds true in that position because for me it's a big uncomfortable when my rear leg's toe is pointing backwords.

    I flat my moving direction foot, and the opposit foot of my moving direction is not flat,because if i keep my rear foot always not flat,it will sour very fast

    Coach, You seem like the mma of pure boxing, I love it. But I wonder if you can explain mike Tyson’s footing with peek a boo, I notice he switches stances but before he does he stays squared but it’s his footing that throws me off in one drill I see if his his feet both look like they’re pointing towards the opposition and this confused the hell out of me. Would love a video on it!

    Fran. Most beginners start coached to fight 1 way. Is it prudent to learn boxing as a 12yr old both left n right stance over a year with elementary. I think ok. Thoughts please?

      No harm. I like to get them to a competent level in their 'natural' stance, and them encourage them to try the other stance if they like. Most want to for the challenge.

      I think so, that's what I coach. The foot will flatten from time to time, but as a principle stay up I think.

    One of your recommended channels, World Class Boxing, says to plant the backfoot to have power. They tech having the backfoot planted the majority of the time. You say to never do it. Comments?

      Mobility is more important in the amateurs compared to the pros. Those videos that Tom covers looks at great pro fighters and the pro game favours power over mobility in general. If you looked at great amateurs my view is that it is a different story.
