Hey Mr. Scott just wanted to say thanks for all the lessons. I've progressed a lot. I'm 19 and with your bass lessons I am able to be to using the knowledge I've gained to gig 5 days a week! Thanks for sharing the lessons!! Keep em coming!!
Yeah, i use this "Synth Trick" too... but with EHX pedals and in paralel. First i send my signal to Octave multiplexer (with the synth octave tone) and the Dry Output to a Tube Zipper (with drive and envelope). So, the Tube Zipper and the Octave outputs are mixed togheter to give me a very tick tone!!!
As you've said Scott's Bass Lessons Steve Wonder's songs are particularly good example for using effects on them, I play Superstition with my band (more like the Steve Ray Vaughan version) and I use a mix of auto wah, octaver and distortion on that tune and it sounds awesome, everybody turn their heads to the bass line as soon as I start to play. BTW: I'm using a good old Korg ToneWorks AX30B pedal board (1996) that still sounds great! Thanks for the delay/reverb tip, I'm gonna check that right away! Cheers!
I can find it difficult to get a tone that sounds dirty enough through a mix without the lower frequencies dropping out, so I've taken to only using pedals that let me mix in clean bass. Is this a problem you ever have? I know some of my favourite players who use a lot of drive go as far as to have separate amps going simultaneously for clean and distorted sounds.
Hey Scott!) Both of your pedals were made for guitars, not for basses. And when the octaver creates it's own bass frequencies, the overdrive cuts it. I use OD-1 for bass sometimes bur on a separate channel - i split the main bass signal. Otherwise it kills the bass. How do you compensate the loss of low frequencies?
Great channel with some awesome tips! I use a Big Muff Pi for distortion, will that get the same tone as the ds1? I want to try that with a oc-2..love that tone!
Awesome pedal talk keeping it simple but super interesting I am starting to save money for pedals Thanks scott for motivating more :) is it me or the introduction song the key changed ??
Interesting, especially the riff. I don't use pedals anymore, but did go through a phase. I believe that if you are serious about using them, don't go cheap.
Nice vid as always, Scott! Not really a pedal/effect, but I was wondering if you ever use a eBow? I use one on tunes like Lordy Webber's "Music of the Night" (gives a nice eerie and almost feedback-like tone which suits the song) and I wouldn't be without mine! (And no, I DON'T plan to try using TWO eBows like Michael Manring does!!!)
Scott have you ever used the Octave multiplexer by EHX is it comparable to the synthy sort of sounds you can get from the OC2? I am looking to buy an octave pedal and was originally looking for an OC2 but keep seeing quite a few people mention the Octave multiplexer. Also heard people saying the 2nd octave down on the OC2 isn't much use with a bass and more useful for a guitar? Any feedback would be most appreciated. Cheers!
Scott if you try the Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B, you will never use another dirty pedal for bass again. I've tried them all and it blows my mind how good it is.
Hi! i just got a used OC 2 from Japan and i love the sound of the first octave by itself but i think the volume is really low... do you know if that is normal or it needs to get repaired?? THANKS FOR READING!
Hi Scott! :) bass noob here(started playing a month ago) and been looking for bass tutorials. Great to find yours. Hope you can enlighten me here, I'm on the process of putting up my pedal board effects, I got EHX big muff pi NANO and MXR bass preamp(both awaiting from EBAY deliveries). Now, I have no idea what else do i need to have, my band plays post core genre(not as soft as pop but not at heavy as metal). Thinking of adding EHX The MOLE bass booster. Hope you can advise me.Cheers!
Hey man. I'm not Scott, but my advice to you would be to stick with what you've got. Worry about playing really well first, that's what'll make you sound good. Once you've practiced enough you'll know what sound you want personally and can do research into pedals.
Hi Scott! I got an OC-2 and i just loved the tone, but i think the octave´s volume is really low by itself, is that normal or should i find some help with it?? THANKS FOR READING AND GREAT VIDEO!!!
You bet. Many of us used to wonder the same thing. Thinking maybe it was for Looks or better technique. But as we got deeper into Scott's lessons, he shared a nice story about his condition.
i use a couple of tec 21 pedals for amp emulation, i blend the two to create the perfect overdriven stoner fuzz bass sound whilst maintaining lots of low end. plus i means i can go straight thru a PA and use any house amp as a monitor and my sound will be 100% the same. less amp carrying too! soundcloud.com/brunt-1/bass-test-1/s-Rxae8
Look up online how to adjust action on a bass (Action is the distance of the strings from the neck). Also, some basses are designed to allow for different actions so past off it is the bass that you're using. Hope this helps. If you have any questions just ask.
Scott is English, therefore he uses BRITISH/UK spellings, not AMERICAN spellings. Yes, his spelling is occasionally wrong in his workbooks (!) BUT in this case he is 100% correct. You might as well say it's "wrong" to say "crotchet" instead of "quarter-note!" Because I am Scottish and therefore learned music in the UK, I always mentally translate American terms like "eighth-note" into the British equivalent (i.e. "quaver").
Ahhh yeah but the main reason for using combinations of distortion, octave, delay and a bit of chorus or phaser rather than dedicated synth pedals is because you avoid the dreaded tracking problems All synth pedals ive used take so long to set up to track......Synth pedals are too much of a headache.....bloody waste of time if you ask me. Ill stick to yourr kinda combo to get the same kinda sound without the hastle
Hey Adi... yeah i've had latency issues before with synth pedals... total pain in the ass! Distortion and octave give me a nice synthy type of sound without all the hassle. Cheers for coming along to hang out man! :)
Man, I´m not a bass player (guitar player, actually), but I love to watch your videos.. They are lessons to me.. Thanks a lot, e keep producing them!

You are my favourite teacher Scott...The best one!
Great timing - I was just this week thinking about dipping my toe in and getting my First pedal or two - so a well timed vid for me! Thanks

Whhhhaaaaa I bet the auto wah sound killer! :)
YES, Scott! Digging the Jamiroquai vibe, man!
Phil Upchurch used a similar synth set up for his studio session work with Curtis Mayfield on If There's Hell Below We're All Going To Go
Hi Scott, Siedah Garrett also co-wrote Man in the Mirror. Great tune!
Yeah Paul... AWESOME tune! :)
Loved the lesson. I'm really into effects and I have to get myself a good reverb, octaver and synth one. Love the tones.
I keep meaning to get even more into them but always run out of time... someone needs to come up with a 28hr day, lol! :)
+1 for slapback delay, works great for a lot of instruments
i have just got a zoom multi effects pedal . what do you think about multi effects pedals ? great lessons learnt so much from you thanks
dan

I know some of my favourite players who use a lot of drive go as far as to have separate amps going simultaneously for clean and distorted sounds.
Make a review/demo of that bass!!
Thanks, this is useful. I play straight into the amp but I've got a bass solo and need at least some boost.
My pleasure Spoddie :)

good taste in choosing the guitar - got the same model ;) what you think about Sadowsky's basses at all , Scott ? :) take care bro !
Nice vid as always, Scott!

Do you think, that octave will work with Fuzz just like this?
Yep! I have a Big Muff Pi for Bass, and a POG Octave pedal. They sound amazing together!
Charles N. Greggo thanks man!
Vašek Peroutka Yep... defo! :)
It sounds better imo
why is the intro pitch shifted?
good video by the way =)
Think it happened in the editing... good ears man ;)
as soon as I opened the video, I noticed that! hahahaha
I rly love this song =D
Nice Sadowsky scott! Metro? I have a MV5 and it's sweet. Awesome basses.
OC-2 is a secret weapon for sure!!
Is the octave pedal there mainly to "get back" the low end signal that is potentially lost from the distortion pedal?
What a bass dude!

Beautiful bass, and beard looks good on you!
Try the panda future impact. Its the first pedal after Akai Deep Impact that really sounds good for synth sounds an a bass.
Hi! i just got a used OC 2 from Japan and i love the sound of the first octave by itself but i think the volume is really low... do you know if that is normal or it needs to get repaired?? THANKS FOR READING!
Hey Scott! How do you have your DS-1 set? Can't tell with that missing knob!! LOL
Where can I listen to the full intro
Hi Scott. Could you explain how you gig. Do you know every song in the galaxy and just show up and play? This is something that often confuse me.
I know a lot of songs Martin but I also read music and I also have to learn specific songs for different gigs... so it's a bit of everything :)
Hi Scott! :) bass noob here(started playing a month ago) and been looking for bass tutorials. Great to find yours. Hey Scott, I used an Ibanez ts9 overdrive but it was too intense for the pa system, does the distortion abuse the system or the amp?
Electroharmonix big muff bass is a better distortion in my opinion
Yep. I have the green Big Muff Pi.
I love the old big muffs! The only reason I use the boss is - I already had it lying around :)
Dan Tyler But the Big muff is a fuzz pedal not a distortion??? I have one as well as a distortion.
Hi Scott! I got an OC-2 and i just loved the tone, but i think the octave´s volume is really low by itself, is that normal or should i find some help with it?? THANKS FOR READING AND GREAT VIDEO!!!
Great Scott !!! A Five string !!!
ps to join your excellent classes does it always have to be a one off payment or can you split it in to three payments for example
cheers
dan
Can someone please explain the glove? (I'm a guitarist)
Google it
CrazyJoe Just a medical condition Scott has no other reason!
hi scott! im from argentina, sorry for my english, my question is why the intro tune is in higher pitch haha! saludos !!
Hey Scott, are your pedals made in Taiwan or in Japan?
what sadowsky model is that? 4491?
Is that a new bass??
That's Discover Double Bass's Sadowsky. Looks like Scott's P bass is laying on the couch behind him.
Lol... it sure is Andrew. I stole it from Geoff for the lesson :)
What happened to "Why You Shouldn't Play a Five String Bass?"
This may be a stupid question but what is the purpose of the glove? Thanks.
He has a nerve damage condition. The glove makes it more tolerable to play. I actually think it's a pretty cool look!
Charles N. Greggo 10-4 Thanks for the reply.
You bet. Many of us used to wonder the same thing. Thinking maybe it was for Looks or better technique. But as we got deeper into Scott's lessons, he shared a nice story about his condition.
Where ever my bass goes my sansamp bass driver DI comes with me haha
Feel the same way with my Darkglass B7K!
+Trev Cornwall use mine too. Had the oc-2 but it was too muddy for my p bass

how you get your bass strings so close to the neck?
Look up online how to adjust action on a bass (Action is the distance of the strings from the neck). Also, some basses are designed to allow for different actions so past off it is the bass that you're using. Hope this helps. If you have any questions just ask.
thanks , im using esp d-4
tube amp?
Rock and Roll!
I think the Jamiroquai line you are playing is Light Years, not Black Capricorn Day.
Ooopps just heard Black Capricorn Day. Sorry Scott. Need to brush up on my Jamiroquai.
I need that bass!! Lol
dat bass though. GAH
pitched up intro? how come?
Scott, I bet everybody asks you about this glove all the time, and of course you might answered already, but... tell me please why you use it?
Seria bueno los subtitulos en español para nosotros los latinos
uuuu spellldd favorite wrongg lollll

3?? xD you mean 222
That bass is sexy!!!!
For my taste, both sound absolutely horrible. Are you sure those pedals are made for the low frequencies of the bass?

Scott Devine You guys are responsible for me playing today. First time in 6 months. Proper inspirational. Cheers
