  • A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up/shooter arcade game, Bucky O'Hare.
    Played through on the default machine settings with Dead-Eye Duck.
    Between the comic book, the cartoon, and a line of toys, Bucky O'Hare had become a relatively popular IP in America by the early 1990s. It followed the trends of its era with its anthropomorphic, action-hero cast, and as such, it was ripe for picking when Konami snapped up the video game rights.
    Just like their treatment of other similar franchises (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa, and so on), Konami went all out in adapting the property to a video game.
    The arcade Bucky O'Hare game melds the format of a 2.5D beat 'em up with that of a run-and-gun shooter, feeling something like a mixture of Turtles in Time and Aliens. While there are jump kicks and special moves, you get a stock of screen-clearing bombs like you'd find in shoot 'em ups, and you fire a laser gun at enemies instead of beating them to a pulp with your fists. Since this change means you don't have access to multi-hit combo moves and throws, it makes for a bit simpler of a game than the traditional beat 'em up, but it balances this with its fast pace and the number of enemies it tosses at you. Things never get dull, that's for sure.
    The levels are all unique and well designed, and they do a phenomenal job of bringing the Aniverse to life. They, like the characters, look unbelievably good, and it's clear that the development team did their homework for this one. The characters and environments are super-faithful to the cartoon, and Konami even hired the TV show's cast to record the dialogue for the cutscenes! You really couldn't ask for a better way to "play TV the cartoon." Everything about the presentation screams of Konami's penchant for high production values and thoroughly enjoyable multiplayer gameplay.
    But regardless of if you are a long-time fan or if you are someone who is just hearing about Bucky O'Hare for the very first time, it's easy to appreciate the care and attention to detail that was sunk into this production. It has stood the test of time well - it's still easy to jump right in and start playing, and it's still easy to have a wicked fun time with it.
    Do you really need anything else in an arcade game?

    Even though Bucky O'Hare never caught on, Konami was able to spin gold out of this franchise both on the NES and the arcade. This is actually quite an ambitious arcade game, as it serves as a finale to the cartoon that it never got, since it was canceled after one season. That's the great thing about Konami back in the day. Even if the license they had was a bit of a dud, they still gave it 110%, and never just pushed something out for the fans. They gave them a fantastic experience to savor.

      Now I really feel dumb….. Watching the intro bit I never realized (back then) Jenny was a cat. The big king fluff of pink kind of makes her look like another bunny/rabbit. Never really did get enough time in the mornings to watch complete episodes, usually like the mid-end of the episodes.

    god, the 90s were so magical. This bring me back to a time when the Ninja Turtles mania was still in full force, and there were some hit-or-miss cult classics that it spawned. This one being one of them!
    Konami was just so talented when it came to their licensed arcade beat-em-ups like this. No one even compared! But you can't even complain about a space bunny and his crew incinerating evil toads with laser guns. This game is so awesome

    Bucky O'Hare is indeed a rare gem. Its just utterly unfortunate the cartoon never got a season 2. From what I heard to why season 2 of Bucky O'Hare never came to being despite the show's popularity from what I took notice is due to the poor handling and distribution of the toy line.
    If only Bucky O'Hare made a awesome comeback to the very point where it ran for several seasons, we may even see video game versions like this pop up on Xbox Live, Playstation Network and many others.

Didn't get to play it until the mid 2000s via MAME, since I never laid eyes on an actual cabinet, but being a big fan of the source material (and the NES game), I had to try it, and man, it's awesome. Shame the IP kind of fizzled so quickly. I thought they had some great stuff to work with, and the sci-fi bent was a refreshing change of pace from ninjas and whatnot.

    @susanfit47 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the tradition of Konami's other smash hit 4-player action games, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, X-Men and G.I. Joe, comes Bucky O'Hare. Based on the hit afternoon cartoon show, Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars, and a very successful toy line, this game is a visual and aural arcade feast! The graphics in this side-scrolling action/adventure game are better than the TV cartoon! Extremely detailed and finely rendered multi-layered background create a believable sense of perpective. Captain Bucky O'Hare, Dead Eye Duck, Jenny, and Blinky the Android are all large, well-rendered, and smoothly animated characters. While it is generally classified as a scrolling beat 'em up, fighting game, utilizing a Final Fight-esque landscape, the player's character is also armed with a laser gun, adding in elements of a scrolling shooter. However, if the character is extremely close to an enemy, he will throw out his fists to attack - a precursor to the characters featured in Metal Slug, who use knives in close combat. An intense rock 'n' roll soundtrack, plus tons of digitized speech and sound effects make you feel like you're playing the TV cartoon show, not a video game. The only predicament you'll have with Bucky O'Hare is whether to watch or play!
