Yep, Cairo didn't make it into the "10 mostr dangerous towns in Illinois" list. It is about 90% abandoned and it may look scary, with so many run down old buildings around; but it doesn't seem to be particularly dangerous.

Black people demanded more jobs and white business owners left instead of hiring black workers. Cairo like East St. Louis is an example of economic racism that many claim don't exist or doesn't effect the current generation. Cairo should be a prime tourism spot in the State.

Sorry, nothing looked threatening at night there except maybe the raccoon crossing the street. Creepy town at night, hell yes. Bullets weren't flying, gangs weren't having shootouts. I am from Chicago. I wouldn't go in certain south side or west side neighborhoods at night in an armored tank with a police escort. Dude, your TH-cam title for this vid is OVER the top dramatic. THINK how dangerous! You simply dont wanna tangle up with anything 15 ft tall standing up as they should be in the middle of the freekin darkasass road It's just way better to be safe than to be all chewed up by a streetwalkin 15ft (standing) she-raccoon, no? I'm a truck driver who lives in murfreesboro Tennessee, of which did a video of, but my route takes me thru Cairo every other day. Cairo is just a very sad town with alot of poverty and no jobs. I've never witnessed anything illegal, not saying that it doesn't happen, but people have nothing to do. So they hangout on the street, the only thriving business there is the liquor store. Many people have tried to open a business, but never made it, because people have no money. There are alot of disabled people that live there, you see them alot in their motorized wheelchairs. People depend on the soup kitchen there.
There is also a high police presence there, so don't speed beyond the 30 mile speed limit, or you will get busted. Probably their only source of income.

Small world, I was just here last weekend (8 days ago), you should have gone here during the day to get a better appreciation of the old decaying forgotten houses like the one at 9:13 in this video, I also shot some video of the old GEM theater here and will be posting it soon. I spent a few hours in Cairo and a some of the other run down towns close by, lots of abandoned places, many were the result of flooding. This was my 2nd trip here, my first trip was 1.5 years ago, I met an older White woman who said she lived here 50 years with her son and was originally from Wales, told me the nearest grocery store was 30+ miles away in KY. There's a lot of history in this town, they've knocked down some of it unfortunately that I never got to see. They're supposed to be building a new river port here which will bring jobs and some revenue.

At 9:21 the white house with the garage was my grandparents house that they raised my dad in. They owned it from 1940's to the time they died. My dad kept it after they passed for a few years and then sold it and the property next door on the left. It was immaculate then. The garage was built after we sold. I'm 55 and was in Cairo all the time up till I was about 28. I still go down to Shemwells to get BBQ and sauce as nobody has anything like it anywhere.
Cairo started going down hill when they built the interstates and a bridge across to Missouri on it bypassing Cairo. The bridge to Kentucky was important too but it was crazy narrow before they widened it.

It kinda reminds me of my hometown of Becker, Minnesota. Though Becker as of late is experiencing development finally. Like Cairo, Becker is dead and abandoned at night. I could walk down the center of the highways coming into town and not see a single car for an hour. Small towns like these end up forgotten and feeling abandoned, leading to depressing scenes like this.

Dude I'm white and that didn't look "scary" at all. I see you got a FL logo, which part of FL you from? Here in the panhandle (Bay Co.), black folks are just as country as my hillbilly butt from WV. I guess you could call them "southern" but in my opinion, being country and being southern is 2 different things. You should really take the advice from some people on here, and get out and talk to them. You're scared because you're outside your comfort zone. Speak with someone who is in their comfort zone there. I bet you'd be surprised. If these people were trying to say Chicago wasn't dangerous, then I may have a different view. Everyone on here from Cairo seems like really good folks, and if it's as abandoned as you say, then wouldn't that be most of the population? Don't be so quick to judge. Talk to the people. Driving around like Blair Witch Project doesn't get to the heart of the city or town.

As others here have already said, the town is broke due to so much corruption and it is not that dangerous, unless you try to start up a business there (graft). If you want to drive through a dangerous town, try Chattanooga Tennessee just off of the interstate near one of their gas stations.

I visited Vicksburg, Mississippi during their Tricentennial celebration. They have the "VICKSBURG NATIONAL MEMORIAL PARK" in which they have the "USS CAIRO MUSEUM". They have a civil war battleship built in CAIRO, IL. It was there that they explained that the correct pronunciation of CAIRO is actually "CARE - OH". It seems that "CARE-OH" built war ships for the Union Army during the Civil War. It was quite interesting. Anyone from "CARE - OH" should visit the museum given the opportunity.

So either it all collapses or the people at the local level have to rise up and take action and elect better people.

In my early 20s we even clubbed over there after the Missouri clubs were closed..we could smoke on the dance floor and all the dj would say was " no smoking on the dance floor" we'd say boooo and keep going 😂😂😂 It was fun, yeah its raggedy in a lot of places, it's like visibly seeing the trauma of the towns past..but there are some cool af people in and from Cairo!!! Looks like Benton Harbor or Dowagiac,Mi ( Do-wah-Jack).Both small cities in SW Michigan north of S Bend Indiana. They were once busy industrial cities. Now high crime poor family’s poor school system and population decline. In 2024 Dowagiac was ranked #1 for the worst city in Michigan to live.Benton Harbor once had Whirlpool Corp/ Clark equipment very little is left of Whirlpool. Clark equipment company made tractors and heavy earth moving equipment. It closed its plant in the 1980s. Dowagiac also had a rich industrial history. Dowagiac was once known as “Stove Town” it was the furnace capital of the world. All the major furnace / stove companies were located there. Starting with the massive Round Oak foundry in the 1800s. James Heddon inventor of the artificial fishing lure lived in Dowagiac. Heddon was the largest manufacturer😢 of fishing lures and rods and reels. It closed in 1983. There is nothing left of the stove and furnace industry in Dowagiac Mi. Although Dowagiac & Benton Harbor is hometown to many notable people who once lived there.

I know this road very well. Used to drive it every weekend visiting SEMO family. Cairo IS pretty bad, or WAS at one time. Now it's just sad. Back in the day, the Chicago mob had their southern HQ there, they ran the town. Gambling, hookers, drugs, you name it, they owned it, and from there they had "branches" (like a bank) in neighboring states. Now, of course, Chicago is on downhill slide, what with their politicians more and more on the take, and it's citizens (all over Illinois) suffering for it. Last time I was there, I was driving through on my way to Georgia...thirty two years ago. It was really sad then, looks like it's gotten worse. You should actually do some reading on the folklore of southern Illinois, cos if you did, you'd NEVER go there after dark. It's not JUST the crime, it's the legends too. From phantom panthers, to bigfoot, to ghosts, and the occasional serial killer (John Wayne Gacy hunted there). spent about 18 hours there in 1976 after the car broke down trying to get back to Paducah, KY, with a two year old and a newborn! I will not travel through there ever again, felt like I was being watched the whole time. Even my kids were nervous!! Between Illinois and Kentucky state police, we finally got home around 3 am! Seriously, I have no reason to go through there, and I'm glad of it! Surprised it's even still there with the severe flooding every spring!

I've driven thru this city twice before when I was an OTR driver and became curious of it's history so I began watching videos about it. The town has been through some very hard times.
