I consider "Turn" one of the best NO songs ever. Couldn't disgree more about it being a second hand, reclycled musical idea. Having said that, I think the album is uneven. One thing that i like about this record is that you can really hear steve's drumming as they've mixed it perhaps in a more coventional way and he plays regular drumms here instead of the electronic tone one he sometimes uses.

The Peter Hook fallout started in the 80's, Sumner was very doninant in the direction of the music, and often not what Peter Hook wanted to do, Republic is a very Sumner doninated album, due to the fact that Stephen Hague didn't really like Hooks bass sound. the money issues kicked in once Factory Records went bust, Hooks side projects both lost money (dispite Monaco being fairly successful) and London records wrote off the losses from the side projects from the profits from New Order, causing even more of a rift. there's plenty more things that aren't public knowledge that drove them apart, but it had been going on a hell of a long time.

Your quote "Your life is on pause till you get off work" sounds like the title of a lost Smith song

I like Waiting for the Sirens Call and I think it's a solid NO album. There are some fillers (as there is on every NO album). But I think Krafty and the title track, in particularly, are highlights of the album. I especially love the bridge portion on Krafty especially that short guitar solo towards the end, which is a perfect fusion of techno and rock.

i know that you are doing a lot videos but i have a idea that at the end of the month you can rank all of these albums you've heard in mouth either on a different video or in the last reaction of the month. i know that it doesn't make much sense but i think that its pretty cool idea.

Песня Waiting for the sirens call очень похожа на пару песен Monaco, таких как Kashmere и Happy Jack.

I'm surprised at the reaction to this. It's by no means a masterpiece as an album, but two of my favourite New Order songs are "Turn" and "Krafty". I was shocked when you paused and said you hated "Krafty" lol. I am curious to hear your follow-up to this.

    • @justaguy1451

I agree, even though don't think "Krafty" is on the same league with "Turn" is still a very fine song, one of the albums' highlights.

Really, how can you not like Guilt Is A Useless Emotion!? It's the better track of the entire album.

Despite not having many bad tracks this album is not fun to listen through and I generally prefer to come back to individual tracks.
Turn is a bit of a hidden gem in my view.
The title track also seems to drag on for about two minutes longer than it should.
A lot of NO’s most cringe moments seem to appear on this album, especially on Jetstream which seems to convey that Bernard is on some sort of prostitute plane.
The album cover is incredibly boring, but better than Republic.

I think this is the toughest New Order album to judge. I can only break it down.
Who's Joe fine by me but goes on for too long.
Hey Now... I believe it was originally called The Road to Ruin which is a much better title. The tune is good with the odd weird lyric. The synth chords strangely cut out in verse 2 when I think more synths should have got bigger.
WTFSC is generally good. Puzzling lyric in the second verse about a document, though.
I don't like Krafty either. Rubbish lyrics well-meaning that come off as forced. I do like the wobbly synth bridge though. The rest of the bridge sounds reminiscent of All Day Long.
I Told You So is quite original I suppose. I'm not sure really does anything much for anyone though.
Morning Day & Night / Dracula's Castle are New Order by numbers to me.
From what I can tell Jetstream is New Order fans' most hated single. While I would agree it probably is their worst, I don't hate it. I always try to work out where the bass is - I can't hear it! Incidently, Ana Matronic is primarily the backing singer from the Sister Sisters. Although American, they're not a big in the US, but their first self-titled album was big in Europe - worth adding to your list. They are in the similar rock / dance genre but with a very gay persona.
I'm rather fond of Guilt is a Useless Emotion. It could fit on Republic, which is perhaps why. It also would fit on Electronic's second album, Raise the Pressure.
Turn is a good New Order rock song. You might get into this. It would have made a good ending to the album, but they had to spoil it with Working Overtime, which is nearly as bad as Rock the Shit...

      @justaguy1451 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Whoa, good analysis. I'd just like to add that the Single/Video version of "Jetsteam" is much better than the album's, enough to make It a fine song but not great. Also, I consider "turn" more than just a good rock song. Pretty much in agreement with everything else you said.

...everytime I hear those female backing singers, it is automatically Republic flashbacks. The only album where a rather restraint singer's voice is gelling well with a strong Afro-American voice, in my mind, is Primal Scream's "Screamadelica", because Bobby Gillespie manages to know when to not sing at all, or be the second voice to Denise Johnson. But then again "Screamadelica" is a much more open approach to music than this last "try"... "the oomph is fading with this album big time," I totally agree with you. Bernhard's singing lines start to blur into one ever-repeating standard tune at this time. "Krafty" is still alright!

Waiting for the Sirens’ call is the worst album New Order made and it is definitely my least favourite. It is clear that the band were once again not in a good place during the recording. Hooky and Barney were barely on speaking terms and shortly after this album Hooky left the band for good. And yet… in spite of the fact that I do not hold this album in high regard, as a fan of the group I can still hear faint echoes of a semi decent album trying to find its way out of the stale vacuum. First off the opener, Who’s Joe (why not Hey Joe?) is for me the most solid track on the album and the most melodic and melancholic. It’s perhaps a bit of a downer for an opening track but since I’m more of a Movement/Unknown Pleasures guy it ticks the right boxes for me. Turn and Waiting for the Sirens’ call are pretty much the only other tracks that I like, both are solid enough. As for the rest of the album, sorry but I cannot recommend anything else off it. And for a band which pretty much started the whole gothic/industrial genre, to have a cheesy soulless track like Dracula’s Castle is frankly embarrassing. Then again the album cover itself appears to come with a dire warning with “No” stamped across it. No indeed.

Jetstream is terrible, yes. But Guilt Is A Useless Emotion is brilliant. It also sounds a whole lot like 2010. So it’s years before it’s time. For me the album has high highs (Guilt, the title track, MN&D) and low lows (Working Overtime). And the most mid tier mid tier (Krafty, Who’s Joe?).
Take a listen to Who’s Joe?, Hey Now ... and Hellbent (from Lost Sirens) in that Order. They are the same idea done not twice but thrice. Hellbent is probably the best of them. It is the only truly great song on Lost Sirens.
Hooky did leave between Siren and Lost Sirens.

It must be hard to do these reviews. I reviewed movies for a few years and I usually chose things I liked or expected to like. Do you find it difficult to objectively review things you don't like? My brain just tunes out stuff that I am not interested in (movies, music, books, or anything). New Order's sound falls into that category for me. it sounds so bland and diluted. I dislike almost anything that has a dance beat and the vocals need to be distinctive to be interesting to me. I loved the brooding atmospheric melancholy of Joy Division and Curtis had a voice that fit the mood. This is the first time I have ever heard this album and almost everything I ended up loving took a while to have an impact on me. Do you find that you love a lot of things the first time you hear them, or does it take a lot of repeat listens to do that for you?

    • @AlexHaitz
      @AlexHaitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question.
It sometimes depends, usually on the genre. If I were to only do stuff I wanted to do, my channel would probably die because no one would care about what I was listening to. So I try to use it as an excuse to hear new music that I probably wouldn't listen to otherwise. Granted, some of the albums/artists I get excited for, but there's a fair amount that I don't really have interest in prior to listening.
Also, with these first listens, if I do too many in a short amount of time, it's hard for the music to sink in. Doing 2-3 a week several months ago was a bit brutal. But if I can take my time with the music and be intentional, it's a bit easier to soak it in and be in the moment.

@@AlexHaitz I have had that same trouble with movies - watching too much new stuff in a short space of time. I think you will discover plenty of new things to like if you keep going. I remember when I only used to listen to rock. Now I only listen to alternative. I never saw that coming before it happened. Your upcoming list looks pretty great, so that might unearth something for you.

Definitely their worst album, all over the place and shocking lyrics,
But still elements of New Order.
Funny watching you going through all the Joy Division and New Orders albums in a sort space of time.
You have to appreciate the years in between all these albums.
There is a Bad Lieutenant album before music Complete.
Bad Lieutenant is Barney, Phil Cummings, jake Evans who also sings on it, Stephen Morris &Tom Chapman who replaced Hooky.
This is the link between WFTSC and Music Complete .
