Fun fact: the music video for crystal featured a fictional band called “The Killers”...and the rest as they say is rock history.....

I was gonna comment this very thing. And they were so damn lucky, most bands don't get huge like 2 years after they form.

This is an OK album but it starts off fantastically with those first four tracks.
Be sure to check out their 2002 single ‘Here to Stay’ which was released for the film ‘24 hour party people’ and is great.

Think this is a good middle ground album, some stands outs in it. I personally love vicious streak. Overall great album probs the best album since their run in the 80s

Yeah Vicious one of the better ones. Usually the synths are the best bit of later NO

still waiting for your reaction to Monaco - Music For Pleasure, Peter Hook's band.
released in 1997 and reached No. 11 in the UK. The album sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide, with its first single, "What Do You Want from Me?", often mistaken for a New Order song.
"What Do You Want from Me?" was one of two hit singles in the UK. It reached No. 11 in March 1997, while "Sweet Lips" hit No. 18, in May

Bit of Trivia: The band ...The Killers , actually got their name from the fake/made up band in the video for..New Orders song Crystal. You should check it out.

Me: waiting for Crystal's intro to start for him to hear the female backing vocals, lol.

This album is pretty good. Songs like Vicious Streak have a cool vibe, New Order should of done a Bond theme song in the late 90s during the Brosnan era

Get Ready is way underappreciated. I’m a long time New Order fan since first hearing True Faith, which in turn made me pick up Substance, then subsequently introduced me to Joy Division. After the disappointing and lethargic Republic, New Order were over. The band had pretty much said goodbye and were all individually pursing lives away from the ashes of Factory Records. Then in 1998 they announced that they were getting back together. That year I finally got to see them live at the Reading Festival and it was awesome. They looked refreshed and were clearly loving being together again. This was also the first time they really embraced their Joy Division heritage. I was at the front and when the opening cords of Love Will Tear Us Apart hit the crowd it was magical. I left the festival thinking that a new album was surely on the way. Well, it was but Christ did they take their time with it. But for me it was worth the wait. Sure it isn’t perfect the way Technique or Power Corruption and Lies or Low Life are, but it felt like a real New Order album with Hooky front and centre, no longer buried in a murky haze of over produced static. Crystal is the best song on the album by a country mile and in my opinion one of their finest. Primitive Notion really does hark back to Joy Division, with that unmistakable thundering bassline from Hooky. Vicious Streak is gorgeous... “like a solar flare in the rising sun.” 60 Miles an hour is a bit of a filler for me (sorry as I know a lot of NO fans really like it) as are Someone Like You and Close Range, not terrible by any stretch, just not great. I actually do like Slow Jam, even if it contains some of the worst lyrics Barney ever wrote “the bird has flown too high, pretty soon it will be tired.” What the fuck?. No, Get Ready is not consistent, but it has real moments of greatness throughout that remind you just why you fell in love with this band in the first place.

Favourite tracks in order of preference : "Close Range", "Crystal", "Vicious Streak". The live version of "Close Range" on the Finsbury Park Dvd is absolutely epic. I think it's available on TH-cam. Worth checking out.

Can I request you to do Nick Drake's Pink Moon sometime? The whole album is really short and it's just him and his guitar. I find the music in the album really soft and sublime and it is considered way ahead of his time.

The lyrics have become distractingly bad on these later NO albums. Dull rock thud all around too. Crystal pretty good though.

I loved Joy Division, but gradually lost interest in New Order as they moved away from that sound after Movement. The upcoming reviews look pretty exciting. I'm looking forward to rounding out Pavement (would love to see Malkmus and the Jicks at some point), Modest Mouse of course, and I just noticed the Sonic Youth addition which is really exciting for me too. The best thing about New Order is still the way Hook's bass adds so much to the sound. The vocals don't do it for me as they aren't distinctive enough. I had never heard this before so it was an interesting review.

Hello, Alex, it's been a while for me here. Interesting reaction as usual. I'm glad you've heard of Twisted Tenderness which came out a couple of years before. I always say the Electronic albums fill in the blanks. The first and second Electronic albums fit perfectly before and after Republic, respectively. The second Electronic album hints at Twisted Tenderness, which itself is the precursor to Get Ready.
I think Get Ready is the anthesis to Republic dance sound. Unfortunately, it gets too extreme into 'rocking out' which just isn't New Order. I would go as far as to say Rock the Shit is a blight on their legacy. Slow Jam ain't much better. Say what you like about Republic, but one area where most people agree it excels is in the lyrics. The same can't be said for Get Ready; possibly the worse lyrics of Bernard's career. Even Crystal is moronic with the stupid honey/money line. Somehow, this doesn't negate Crystal being a modern New Order classic; the most iconic in the last twenty years.
It's odd that for such a rock guitar strong album that it is the synth lines that make Get Ready work. 60 Miles would be so pedestrian without that heavenly synth on the bridge (which, surprisingly, I believe was Peter Hook). Tracks like Primitive Notion, Close Range, and Run Wild are too elevated by the synths. You maybe disappointed as I was to learn the interesting drums on Primitive Notion were actually done on a drum machine! Morris was unavailable for family reasons. Viscous Streak is the album highlight for me...

Just doesn't have the same magic for me. I recognise the song writing and lots of Hooky melodies, but don't love this album the same as I do their prime output. New Order doing generic rock without the punk or experimental edge is just... meh. [edit] but then again some tracks are cool... it's a bit of a guilty pleasure sometimes. But still I never listen to this album. [double edit] and writing a track called rock the shack... cringeworthy [triple edit] thanks for the trip down memory lane Alex! Love your work.
