    My teacher in metals class in high school back in 1968 did the same thing. It blew 2 windows out of the classroom. Needless to say, he was never allowed to show that experiment ever again.

      my metal shop teacher in high school did the same thing in 2015, first filling a balloon with just acetylene and lighting it, then filling a balloon with oxy-acetylene and lighting it. The first one was loud, the second one had teachers from the neighboring buildings complaining about rattling windows.

      That was experiment with 1g, and in practice, one D size tank of acetylene is 3L (liters, sorry I'm a metric guy), which is like 3kg (3000g).

    My father and I did this in our backyard not knowing how violent the explosion would be. We had recently acquired an oxy!-acetylene setup and I just happened to find a balloon and wondered if it would make a cool fireball or something. I must have gotten the perfect stoichiometric mix in that balloon (fully inflated) because when I touched the flame to it using a long stick it created the brightest, most violent explosion I've witnessed. We didn't have hearing protection on and both of us could barely hear afterwards. Knocked pictures off the wall in the house and multiple neighbors came outside. We had to go around apologizing to everyone, it was quite the event.
    Eventually I ended up joining the military. I've used hand grenades, c4, claymores, witnessed mortar rounds, and airstrikes. Those explosions might have been big, but none were quite as instantaneous and intense as that oxy acetylene. I'd say that balloon had the same explosive energy as a hand grenade, just without the shrapnel to injur us.
    Would recommend 10/10 great memory

      for research purposes I guess?

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is he aimed for the stoichiometric mole ratio of 2.5:1 and when measuring he probably eyeballed it by the size of the balloon after figuring out what the mole ratio translates to in terms of volume.

    • @TheBigun69
      @TheBigun69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The correct ratio is easy to find. Using a welding tip (single hole, not a cutting torch), light it and adjust to a neutral flame, which produces the optimal and hottest flame, thereby, giving you the perfect ratio. Not sure of the scientific or fancy names, but this works. I learned this in 1987 when I went to a VoTech school for welding. We had a rep from one of the torch companies show us the difference between Oxygen, acetylene, and both mixed. The O2 balloon popped....boring. The acetylene made a little boom with black smoke....pretty cool. The oxy/acetylene balloon was 1/2 the volume of the first 2 and it made a helluva BOOM !!! The building superintendent came running and busted through the door....he thought we all got blown up :-D If you try this, make sure there is nothing close....it will cause projectiles to fly at high speeds, causing injuries---Safety first !!!

    • @caerleon87
      @caerleon87 ปีที่แล้ว

      After some experimentation, i can tell you that you want about 1/3 of a bag of acetylene, and the other 2/3 s oxygen. Too much acetylene and you get a slower orangy looking explosion, but the right amount of oxygen and bloody hell!!

    • @David-hm9ic
      @David-hm9ic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBigun69 Yes, that's the best way to get the correct mix. It is important to mention that after adjusting the torch the tip is touched to a steel plate to put the fire out without disturbing the mixture settings.
