I really liked when he said, "It's an imperfect budget but one I can stick to". That's progress! I think many people start off too strict with their goals and then get discouraged. I understand Paul’s thinking by building in contingencies in his budget… but I also understand Caleb’s frustration/passion about the magnitude of his problem. What I would have appreciated from this video would have been a look at timelines with Paul’s budget and comparing them to Caleb’s no nonsense budget, I.e. how long each would take to help him to reach his goals. That realization might have been more impactful for Paul.
I know Caleb speaks of not having a one size fits all budgeting programme but I kinda be comes one size fits most when you don’t take into account humans’ imperfect humanness. In a perfect world people would adhere to a strict budget and easily get their shit together. Paul’s realization of his imperfection and including that in his plan is worth commending.
    That’s just my two cents.
Thank you Caleb for this content and your passion towards improving finances not just Americans but worldwide (I’m watching from Barbados) Thanks to your content I am working on getting out of debt and building a fully funded emergency fund.

I love his bad day fund, i think it demonstrates that he's recognized and is aware of his pitfalls and is able to mitigate impact by putting them in the plan. Instead of, like, not having anything set aside for those moments and then suddenly having a financial meltdown bc he didnt set aside the funds for the smaller "engine checks" (so to speak) beforehand.. He seemed open and receptive to your plan, i don't think he had everything made up in his head at all. I think this guest is the one I have the most hope for (assuming he diversifies away from copyrighted material, otherwise i fear a litigious company may make things much worse), I hope he returns in the future!

This makes me very nervous. I don’t think he understands the severity of copyright infringement.. you may not care but the brands surely will. Especially using snoopy, or anything along the lines of Disney - they will come after you & sue you into the ground whether you’re making $100 or $100,000. If he’s making upwards of $80k+ from profiting off of copyright material that’s grounds for federal charges & jail time.

Giving him such a hard time about some extra spending that is budgeted. My husband and I got out of $162k debt and had a small line item for random guilt free expenses. Like $50 a paycheck, but still needed for mental health! Sidenote this guy needs to stay away from the trademarks/copyrights, he'll get sued one day instead of banned.

I wonder tho - if he allowed ppl to have fun money if they would be able to adhere to his plan. With dieting ppl fail when it’s too strict. It may have worked for him (cutting debt) but if ppl are saying that’s too much, it would make sense to see if he could adjust.

    • @horselover40
      @horselover40 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@TJrules299 people have asked him about this. His response is" this iswhat I would do' rhere is no law saying they have to follow it. And honestly, if people had the control to only spend 25 or 50 a month on fun, and this was their only expense not following his plan, I think Caleb would be happy at least 90% of the time. The issue is people dont only spend 25 or 50 a month coming out if this show typically, so people just need to take their finances in hand

    • @SpoonHurler

I personally agree with Caleb's approach of no fun at the start. I do think you should add some fun after you make some major progress but going all in as you start leads to more success than being luke warm generally. I also don't disagree with highly intentional budgeting of fun as well if you are in the mindset to stick to that budget.
EDIT: Also, no fun until you are out of IRS debt is extremely logical.

@@truebengalsfan seriously? It can allow people to completely change how they're living their lives for the better.
Not being aware that your brain and body works differently means you're on autopilot, which often leads to burnout, breakdowns of jobs/relationships, debt, poor health etc.

Paul - thank you for putting yourself out there and coming on the show! It’s helpful seeing someone adjust their system to make it work with their issues rather than trying be so hard on yourself. With ADHD, it’s definitely important to adjust your environment and not ONLY blame yourself. Yes, we can understand that we are responsible for our behaviors, but also understanding that we can adjust things to make it a bit easier on ourselves is also important. I wish you all the luck and know that you can do it!!! 😊

I disagree I have ADHD among other things and I feel like if I made a fund like this with how impulsive I can be I would fail. If I’m feeling depressed or having a bad day I’m going to spend that in a heart beat. Something I struggle with is structure and once I start slipping then it’s out the window. Everyone is different but if I was in his shoes I would want Caleb to call me on my bs and hold me accountable for my own actions. I also don’t think of it as a handicap, my brain is just different and I navigate things differently. No hate just trying to show you there are different perspectives :)

I also have severe ADHD and finances are are HUGE source of stress for me. I feel like a complete victim at times, while beating myself bc I can’t “get it together” but anytime I’ve asked for help, I feel like I put the person helping in a bad spot bc it’s such an impossible situation. I’ve worked myself into a mess and its super embarrassing bc now my husband has dementia and my 4 kids are old enough to realize I’m always saying no bc we are so broke. The way it eats at me makes it so hard to do anything except spend when I have it. I pay the bills, say yes to little things the kids ask for, buy what we need at the moment, then run out of money by the 10th of every single month.

Being an independent contractor and having my income go from amazing to iffy, then with inflation my rent doubling these past few years I have done something similar. It helped tracking spending for 2 months but also seeing my expenses go down, was able to get an affordable rent bc I moved into a garage apartment. It is so easy to criticize and be judgemental, but he is doing really good and should be congratulated on the hard baby steps he is accomplishing at this moment to get out of the dreadful debt hole. I would focus on the IRS first. After I quit and did my side hustle it was painful doing taxes with my business and owed a lot of money, but now I can write off many expenses so my tax bills are the least of my concerns :).

Hearing Paul discuss his ADD/ADHD symptoms and being untreated for so long hit SOOOOOO close to home for me. My entire life was so structured up until graduating college, and my mental health just completely fell apart because I suddenly didn't have any obligations besides doing the bare minimum for my dead end job. Everything he said about executive disfunction, lack of time management, planning, etc. etc. omg it just hit my heart so hard because I TOTALLY understand where he's coming from. Retail therapy was and still is a BIG copium for me that I'm trying to manage on top of paying down debt, building savings, etc.
I appreciate so much that he opened up about those things because it really made me feel like my personal experiences with ADHD are not as unheard of as I thought. • @summerrein

I feel like he understands his disorder very well. I struggle with ADHD and there is a system for EVERYTHING. You have to create these seemingly elaborate systems to get through normal life that other people don’t need. How he is doing his budget is exactly how I do it-strictly budget, but allow room to “mess up.” If I don’t build in a bit of room to “screw up” I will completely give up on the budget altogether. It might seem like he is making excuses to folks how don’t have AHDH, but there is so much guilt involved in having ADHD, you feel like you have to work so hard just to function normally, and every time you mess up it’s just another reason you suck bc you aren’t normal, so you may as well give up altogether. Building in guilt-free “screw ups” is like giving yourself permission to not suck. I’ve spent the last year on a mission to get debt free (I will be in 2 weeks!!), and after so many years of trying to budget out of my debt, using a system just like what he is doing is what finally worked!

My husband has to have almost little fail safes planned out to keep him from losing momentum. It has taken me a few years to really understand because I would think of it like Caleb in a sense of not wanting to just do the damn thing, but it’s not them not wanting to do the thing, it’s quite literally just how their brain kind of operates so they can do the thing more successfully. To someone like Caleb and myself it sounds like they’re giving up before they try, but it’s not that at all. I remember telling my 8th grade history teacher “just to let you know I have adhd” and the first thing he said to me was “ I know you do but don’t let it be an excuse for all your failures” and that really resonated with me because it gave me a sense of control and confidence. Knew a young man, who would constantly drop the ball or miss critical deadlines and this was always his excuse "I have ADHD."
It eventually became apparent that he was just going to laugh off ANY mistake or error he made with the same, old excuse.

  • @savannahgarza9741

As someone with ADHD, i learned, like this guy, that I have to budget differently than a normal person. Theres this term in our community called the "ADHD tax". Money lost to ADHD. Its an inevitable part of life. We lose shit, forget shit, have impulse control issues. I took out private student loans because of the "ADHD tax" (missing FAFSA deadline). Very expensive ADHD tax... Best advice I ever got was to pay the ADHD tax up front. Basically, pay for anything that will keep you from spending more later. For example, chargers for every area you use a charger instead of paying over and over for lost chargers (which at one point was almost a monthly expense for me...). In this case, I think a fund for the impulse spending is a great idea. I found i will be good for weeks or months and then there will be one day where my shopping will go crazy and suddenly i am panicking because I just spent hundreds of dollars in the span of a few hours. I found that the longer i go doing "good", the more I have likely spent as well. In this case, separate spending set aside for that seems like a great idea. It can serve as a stopping point in a way and keep you from spending as much as you would. Personally, I pay myself an allowance on a separate card to give myself a stopping point to this spending. I am trying to reduce this and build money saving habits, but I just know based off of previous experiences that budgeting for it is best for me
