    This is by far the best and easiest diy solar charger for iPhones I've seen on here. KipKay makes it look so simple. Some of you are asking what the standard diode is? I live in the uk and I've always used a N1914 diode (I think those are the right numbers??) the one I use has a white stripe instead of a black one but yet principal when soldering is the same. The diodes are just designed to stop any power being transferred back into the solar panel from the batteries. I would recommend buying good quality rechargeable batteries with a high Mah as shown in the video, you can get 4 x AA rechargeable ones from my local pound shop but they only have 800mah power so it wouldn't give you much oooomph when charging an iphone.
    Lastly, the only thing I do differently is leave a little toggle switch and the small led on the finished product as I like the fact that you can switch it on and off.
    Overall a fantastic little project to complete in an hour or over a weekend. Thank you KipKay once again for your great tutorials

    I started building one of these years ago with regulators and everything so as to avoid possibly damaging any batteries by running too much juice into them... shortly after, these things were all being sold in the store. I still have the stuff to make it (which I paid $6 for at radio shack) and still want to finish it... maybe a couple years down the road. :)

    • @dp75675

      Unfortunately not because the solar panel won't produce enough energy to charge your phone. But if you connect batteries, the solar panel will charge those batteries then from the batteries it will go to the 5v converter and provide a semi efficient charge

    youre correct on that. You see he also uses an emergency phone charger which uses two double a batteries aswell. Inside that emergency charger is a 5volt dc boost circuit. This special circuit takes the 1.2vx2=2.4 volts(roughlys) and runs it through an oscillator which outputs a steady 5volts in a square wave. You see similar circuits in garden lights that uses one double a battery 1.2volts (mi-mh) to light a 3volt white led.

    To charge these batteries you would have to wait hours. I built one of these myself with 7 old solar cells from garden lights. Even with 7 cells, the best amount of power I got out of it was about 55 mW. So, it was about 11 mA at 5.08 V using a 7805 as my voltage regulator. Needless to say, charging ANYTHING with it would simply not work.

    Yeah I always thought a solar USB charger would be keen for a camping/survival kit. Well I did some research and it lead me down a long and adventurous path of some pretty ground breaking tech… I started with an idea of a solar flashlight that would give a bit of power back to itself, but would not last forever. I know that nothing last forever on its own. So…. Long story short. I discovered some home grown smarts that used a peltier device to create a flashlight with no need for onboard power supply.. So I looked into that and then thought of a new idea, a camping stove that could charge USB devices. Well I do my research before anything and found a camp stove that already exists and is on the market. The BioLite is a small compact camp stove that has taken the peltier device and incorporated it with a camp stove to create a wood stove generator.. Really cool piece of gear. Works like a charm. Check it out. Im gonna load up some video's of me using mine this summer. Its called the BioLite. Google that shit!! Hahaha.. Live smart and survive!!

  • @DR47remix
    @DR47remix 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yeah. Thats what i was thinking. But i think it might just charge a little slow, or in some cases, i think there is a little transformer in the phone. Anyway, there's visual proof! PS: Voltage is important in electronics but you MUST remember the difference between volts and watts. Volts is BASICALLY how fast the electricity is, but WATTS is BASICALLY how powerful the electricity is!

  • @matthewcummins9997

    So to apply solder for example you have to take the solder stick thing then melt it on the solar panel negative and positive spots then take the solder stick again then melt it on the diode. Then attach the diode to the positive side and melt them together with the solder gun????? And the same thing for wires??

      Brown Dog Gadgets Are you telling me that it's difficult to solder some batteries to a solar panel and stick it inside a metal tin? A ten year old could have though of that! People have been doing it for years, you have no kind of legal right to that information. Nor do you have any proof that Kipkay even saw your video (which has less than 20k veiws, so I doubt it).

    Found solar panels wit similar size(not sure of their DCV or amount of W) in small garden lamps less than 2€ piece!

    Pff, what are you doing with your life, man. I got three solar chargers right here. Was gonna make a few tweaks to connect them and create my own, but this setup sounds much nicer than what i had planned.

    He removed the bulky casing and replaced it by an even bulkier case... And he replaced the batteries with not only the panel but recharchable batteries, too.
    I would have changed the batteries inside the original charger and ran the wires for the panel to the outside. Optional would be a tiny plug to detach it and recommended would be a hard envelope to protect the panel. (This could also be build as a stand to cach light more efficiently)
    Would have been much more tidy.

    is it possible to cut a slot kind of like a window for the solar panel then glue it so the altoidsso it exposes the solar panel so when u use it the other wires and stuff wont get exposed(just in case if it drizzles a little or if u accidently drop or something like that)

    Wow, I was watching you from when you had around 30-40 vids. I was bored and remembered about you, but didn't know your channel name. So I searched your Lighter Laser (the only project I remembered), and now, I found you :D

    I was hoping for some overcharge protection or some other essential features..
    I've been wanting to build something like this for ages now but there aren't any easy to follow / informative tutorials online :(

    Technically yes, but that would just involve an extra step. You'd have to charge up the batteries first, then charge the USB device. Much more efficient to do it all at once. And really with this he's basically just using the batteries as large capacitors.

    I wonder if you can attach the solar charger directly to the leads on a battery powered device to charge while it is being used

  • @joeldesmit
    @joeldesmit 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is everyone forgetting that you need 5 volts for an usb device to charge. You need two more batteries and two or three more solar panels for this little device to be effective.

    that is great! you can also charge batteries with the solar panel.

    Please note that the sort of battery you use is VERY important, as this setup has the potential to overcharge batteries. Lithiums are a no-no and NiMH, such as he has, are also not a good idea. NiCaDs are your best bet.

      Yes, as long as it has a USB port. (The Lightning to USB cord) And soldering irons/guns are available at Radio Shack.

    I did this one time as an emergency to charge my phone while we were camping, I have a solar panel like 1 foot long that is good to recharge the car battery, so I took a usb car charger and dismantled it to use the usb port and connected the wires to the solar panel directly, i didn't use any batteries on between and it worked great, the phone started charging inmediatly. So my question is! Why do you have to build a battery pack? I mean that will be good as a reserve for a future charge maybe at night when there's no sun energy. Just saying!

    I don't understand the concept of the diode really, I know they only let a small current pass. I am making one and is there a specific one for different voltage? And I am using 9v. because I want to charge my ipad so , do I need a different one, will it work on my phone too??? And instead of 1 USB Ports I am using 2 does it make a difference??? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

    Hot glue is a non or low conducting material. You want medal solder to keep the electrons flowing!
