Justin and Sierra. The best there is. What a haunting beautiful piece of music. Musicians like Sierra and Justin come along once in a lifetime. They are the Mozart prodigies of our time.
This is so beautiful, graceful, rich and sensitive! They really are fantastic, both of them. I really need to learn this kind of music, it really moves me.
The only thing I love more than a Sierra Hull video, is one where she shares the limelight with Justin Moses. For Pete's sake, is there an instrument that man doesn't play? I love them! Thank you for the great music.
I could only dream of getting this good. I don't think there is anyone I'd rather listen to play the mandolin than Sierra Hull. A master musician! Justin is fantastic too.
People don't realize Justin Moses played for Ricky Skaggs. He doesn't let scrubs in his band. Sierra was the first student to ever get a music scholarship to Berkeley College of Music by a bluegrass player. These two are top notch.
When you listen to Sierra's new recordings on 'Weighted mind' you can hear her moving much more towards her own variation of jazz - very interesting and great music.
The fact that Sierra Hull uses the Radius should be all that anyone needs to know, for this to be the one and only mandolin pickup you should consider.
I've abandoned bluegrass, heading toward jazz instead. When I hear playing like this, it makes me feel like the world's biggest fool for leaving. Alas, if there were musician like them nearby, I'd be grassin' again in a heartbeat.
They are two of the best in the business. Just saw them on the Tonight Show backing Brad Paisley. You probably don’t get that gig unless you’re among the best.
Looking for a pickup that sounds just like the guitar, just louder. Not a guitar electronically jacked. Some of the Lyric guitar videos sound awesomely natural & some sound super electronic. Pickers here are awesome.
I disagree with the last post.. The instruments are simply using a LR Baggs pickups systems are designed to be amplified .. It is almost imposable to get a 100% natural acoustic sound from a pickup system like using a high end condenser Mic. That being said you get the freedom of movement and not having to be placed perfect in from of a mic. Great for live shows as I play and it works well with percussion too. I think in a perfect world and setting / recording studio mic's are the king! As-far as playing live this is a great tool w/out the complexities of stage mic's / sound reinforcement/ feedback etc.
I hear Moses is really weak on the slide trombone. Seriously, he is giving Stuart Duncan some competition for being a top session-quality instrumentalist on a variety of instruments -- oh and he sings, too. Moses hasn't yet distinguished himself on one instrument the way that Duncan has with the fiddle, but he played even more instruments from what I can tell. He is amazing.
Great performance. Baggs: please give enough info about the recording setup so people know what they're listening to. Both the Radius (mando) and the Lyric (guitar) are going through Baggs Venue preamps, right? How is the Venue setup (EQ, gain, etc?) on the mando? We aren't hearing only the Radius and the Lyric, right? I mean, I hear some ambient mics at the end of the video. How much pickup vs mic are we hearing? In other vids of the Radius, there's a much more piezo sound and lots of pick/body noise on mando. How did you dial that out?
Great acoustic music like this has withstood the test of time and will always be relevant. Rap "music" has withstood the test of slime and will only appeal to people who have ears that don't quite work right...These two are world class musicians and yet it would be a challenge to find many people who know who they are.....
Is there also a microphone mix on this? The highs on the mandolin are unusually high for these types of pickups. Also, these two got married recently. :-)
Much as the video features the guitar mic & the the Radius M mandolin mic, the other product at play is the Venue DI both of them are going through. I have and use both the Radius M and the Venue DI for my acoustic mandolins. Heck; I've even used the Venue with my electric mandos. The tone and overall sound in the studio was probably exquisite, and right where they wanted it to be. BTW, caught Sierra's trio on tour; phenomenal show. I think she had the Venue; she downsized her electric effects for the fly dates and left that crazy DL4 at home.
So far I have noticed more good women mandolin players than men. Also very good is the mandolinist Louise Costello who I watched live a few months ago. Probably just a coincidence.
I think it helps to have small hands. The fret space is so damn tiny above the 5th fret. Note Jaco Pastorius was able to do what he did on the bass partially due to the size of his hands. And John Entwistle became frustrated with lead guitar because his hands were too big to fit on the frets in the higher register. He switched to bass and became the legend that he is.
Talent knows no gender. Also, I have seen people with big hands do a masterful job on the mandolin. Their big fingers may fret three strings at once, but they make sure to pick only one of the strings :)
I love the music and the setting (where they are playing). This may sound petty, but I wish they looked like they were enjoying what they were playing. I think the same about Hillary Hahn on the violin. She plays brilliantly, but at times she seems to be entirely disinterested in the beauty she is eliciting from the music and her instrument. This piece has so much vitality and joy. I hear it but don't see it. This is the first I've heard and seen of this duo. Is this simply the way they are? (Any mandolin players our there familiar with Nina Gerber?)
They're concentrating so intently it doesn't show in their faces. Trust me, they're really into it and having a good time. Just too busy to grin for our benefit.
He always looks like that. This is an unusually sombre performance for her. Go find any of the many live videos of her, she is normally a hugely charismatic performer.
The performances are fantastic. That being said, the tone that these players are really pulling out of those instruments is not translating well with these pickups. The mids on the mandolin are harsh and there is an overall tightness missing. Acoustic guitar simply sounds electrified. This is not usually what is desired in this genre of music.
Well in this situation ( ony two acoustic instruments mikes would be better but if you need a pick up ( play with a drummer fer instance) the Baggs is pretty good. Somehow nobody has ever figured out how to amplify a steel string guitar well
Justin and Sierra. The best there is. What a haunting beautiful piece of music. Musicians like Sierra and Justin come along once in a lifetime. They are the Mozart prodigies of our time.
Her playing is among the best. Every note is clear and pure. Amazingly gifted musician.
She worked her ass off to get there she is.
This is so beautiful, graceful, rich and sensitive! They really are fantastic, both of them. I really need to learn this kind of music, it really moves me.

An awesome couple! Sometimes too many players in a band can detract from the artistry. Just these two are perfect.
I could only dream of getting this good. I don't think there is anyone I'd rather listen to play the mandolin than Sierra Hull. A master musician! Justin is fantastic too.
Great jam with the BEST pickup systems made for acoustic instruments.
Absolutely incredible playing from both. Don’t know the name of that tune but sounds very much like an Irish reel I’ve heard in the past.
Blackberry Blossom?
@@sinebar You got it!! :)
I favored this a long time ago. Deserves a second round of applause... Cheers and thanks!
Very clear and precise picking I really enjoyed listening........
everybody is a critic here , this is great mueic.
music u mean
Robert Harding some people just dont understand what good music is , i tend to not talk to those people

Agreed but they're definitely overdoing it with the weird filming.
What an awsone Bluegrass Couple! What a great Sound!
Mandolin music is just piercing my heart 💓
The fact that Sierra Hull uses the Radius should be all that anyone needs to know, for this to be the one and only mandolin pickup you should consider.
Great picking that comes through with great clarity and detail.
A pair of richly gifted players.
I could listen to this all day
from one mandolin player to another, great work'
Y’all can on day play this for your grandchildren ♥️
this is great picking , both !!!!
so clean and strong !!!!
That cute little girl with bangs grew up to be one of the most beautiful ladies on the planet.
The pickups sound fine to me.
Absolutely Amazing!
Outstanding performance!

great on both her talent and beaury!
Temperence reel!!! so gooood!
How do you not love this? 💕
great job Sierra and Justin
Superb...Enjoyed thoroughly
she is the cutest girl and she is the very talented what's not to like
Unusually small feet 😂
@@LukeLittle-rt6sn how do you notice something so trivial? jeez
@@LukeLittle-rt6sn you apparently weren't swept away by her astonishing playing abilities if you have the mind to pay attention to her feet
🤮
Simp
very well played, gives me a standard to aim at.
Wow, her playing is so clean. Guess it helps to have small hands on a mandolin!
And great soaring talent. :)
Check out Adam Steffey and Mike Marshall though. Two of the best pickers in the world and their hands are like first base leather mitts! 😆
Sweet!!!!!❤😮
Looking for a pickup that sounds just like the guitar, just louder. Not a guitar electronically jacked. Some of the Lyric guitar videos sound awesomely natural & some sound super electronic. Pickers here are awesome.
It's the EQ, buy an EQ pedal and you'll be fine.
Excellent!!!

Unbleable awesome nice...
great music
He is one lucky guy❤

It may actually have both

Dang!
What is the name of the mandoline. The model an the factory. I really like the deep sound.
She's playing a Gibson
💖💖

Philippe Adib Probably the size of the fingers :0

SÅÅ BRA
Well, geez, thanks for distracting me from the tunes I should be learning for my lessons. What a beautiful distraction, though.
ha!
It’s like she was born with a mandolin in her hands
I don’t think LR BAGGS RADIUS sounds such good…i have one…why is it like that!
Billy in the Lowground?
Either Big Sciota or Temperance Reel
Cool if you give us the name of the tunes!
Temperance Reel
my daughter's middle name is mandolin
How do I learn to play this style and phrasing? What scales/whatever are they using??? Please.
Benayrsty Usually simple major scale corresponding to the chord being played, possibly adding some blue notes if you want.
Benayrsty I´s basically a version of the Irish trad tune "Teetotaller´s Reel".
But more commonly known as Temprance reel. G Em D and a quick C in there once
👍
it's TetoTaler's jig, whole video. good job anyways
What instrument does Justin Moses not play....

I wonder if they are "bumpin uglies"
That's a great band bumping uglies

I agree. But their playing is still outstanding
I like the Baggs pick up Sierra is using. Great if you have an old mando and do not want to replace bridge ( for the Fishman unit)
Which pick up systems are you comparing this with? Amplification always involves lots of compromise.
Well in this situation ( ony two acoustic instruments mikes would be better but if you need a pick up ( play with a drummer fer instance) the Baggs is pretty good. Somehow nobody has ever figured out how to amplify a steel string guitar well
GodsGreatOutdoors sounds fantastic to me
