The Greg Kihn Band did an outstanding cover of this relatively unknown gem back in the late 70's. It impressed Bruce so much that he "gave" Kihn a terrific rock song, Rendesvous, to put on his next album. I had been a Bruce fan since "Born to Run" in '76 and knew he was great, but when he did this for an unknown (at the time) club band band from the Bay area,I realized that Bruce was special. And he keeps validating that fact over and over and over again. A once in a lifetime person & talent
And I thought I was the only one that knew this (other than The Greg Kihn Band and the E Street Band, of course!). Greg Kihn's version is delightful, a truly wonderful bit of power-pop. Bruce Springsteen's version, though, on "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" and in his live performances bring SOUL, HEART, and CRYING to one of the greatest songs ever written. To YOU, Greg, and to YOU, Bruce, and to YOU, Greg T. 'Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue ...
Devils and Dust tour...was lucky to see Bruce perform this at a rehearsal show at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park in April 2005. Incredible. Beautiful. Moving. Unforgettable. Will he ever tour acoustically again?
Check out Bruce performing it on 10/23/99 in LA and get back to us. Manfred Mann is a great cover band. How do you think they'd have done with the song if Bruce hadn't given them permission to record it, or written it. I know he does appreciate the royalties.
@bgilbertson00 The best version, IMO, is the one played at his first concert in in Europe, in November of 75. It's called the Hammersmith, sometimes, the Hammersmith Odeon, version. It's here on TH-cam and you can download it from iTunes for 99 cents. This is a bootleg from the Devils & Dust tour in 05. He came out alone and mesmorized us for 2 + hours. And by alone I mean, all by himself. That's working without a net.
For You from the Hammersmith Odeon gig 1975 is 9 minutes long and filled with passion and emotion. Just bruce and a piano. Very great i advise you check it out
Blackenedfifth...I hate to say this but that's how it used to be :( not any more though sadly... just spend some time on BTX message boards..... and it's not just limited to the younger ones....the over 40 & over 50 has its share as well.... everyone seems to now have this know it all attitude and put down others who don't have the same knowledge or experience under their belts... the 19 year old is just sponging up that same attitude unfortunately :( I'm not at all condoning it either though :(
I can 'splain this song. I am the girlfriend he sang about and still am. I can 'splain. Oy yoi yoi. So sorry, baby. It's been so hard these last few years but I have faith. Still have that Mother Mary Guadalupe mother and child medal necklace, but it WON'T COME OFF THE WALL. Susan Marcia Garcia kaufman. Maria, darlin' Bruce. Thanks for listenin' 'n not taking other peoples words. Thanks for faith and the love and loyalty. thanks for followin' your heart. thanks for bein' yourself. Love, Susiesmk
Probably my all-time favourite Bruce song and this version brought me to tears. Magic.

RIP to the art of metaphor in song. though it had been ill since the late 80's, it finally gave up the ghost in 1997.

He played this version 2 hours before the show in Limerick, Ireland in July!

@gr8gt1 I agree but I love the Manfred Mann version even better..it has more energy!
Fammi compagnia anche questa sera amico mio
Hey look! The greatest artist that ever lived! And he came from nothing! And he is modest!
Is there another slower version, filled with deeper emotion.
