Wow! Billy Drummond has used his past experiences and listening to the utmost to create a wealth of knowledge. This is the best video on the YT concerning the history of jazz drumming from the 50's onward that I have viewed, (and from a discriminating audiophile at that). Thank you Billy and Ken!
Agree, Billy Drummond is a marvelous conveyor of jazz history and drumming, and always fails to mention what a wonderful drummer he is himself 🥁🥁🥁 We are thankful to be part of his orbit🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
This is really wonderful - a marvelous collection of records with great historic insights from Drummond! I love the Louie Bellson story of jingle sticks and slippers in the airport (I met Bellson once too in the 80s: blown away by his kindness and humility, asking me, an 18 year old, how I thought his ping ride sounded out front!). I was fortunate to meet Jimmy Hopps (Jimmy EsSpirit) in Denver about 20 years ago, we played a bit together in the studio as my friend was shooting a documentary on Hopps at the time ... I am pausing to listen to a few of these records I never heard before, and just watched Bobby Ward soloing on the wine glasses at the 347! Thanks again Billy (and Micallef for the interview)
Fantastic interview Ken. I could listen to Billy Drummond all day Awesome he mentioned Howard Kjng from Gary Bartz’s Ntu Troop Killer drummer as is Billy Thanks again Ken 🥁😃
Absolutely tremendous and the discography Billy lays out should be mandatory listening and studying for any drummer coming up. Also, as already noted at the beginning Billy's got his own albums out as well and I can attest to them being must haves. Love this! More please!
Ken, Love this type of content, thank you for doing these! I'm midway through this one and Will be checking out the rest of these! Appreciate your passion for this music! Billy is a historian, as are you!
That was so good. I saw Billy Drummond at the Cork Jazz Festival many years ago with Renee Rosnes. It was memorable. I have many of those records. Just a point of interest, Kenny Wheeler did all the arrangements for the George Adams album . I knew Kenny and he loved that album. It's a rare example of Kenny playing on the blues. Anyway ,thanks for a great video . All the best, Richard
One of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. Some of these records i didn’t know. And it’s nice to have some background knowledge as I might encounter them in digging adventures. Thank you. God bless
Great stuff Ken! "The fact that those people were alive was, well just a blessing." So much talent, knowledge, experience and modesty to boot. So Good! Dig Jazz and cheers from Oz
Love, love, love your drum videos, Ken (and I'm not even a drummer). This has got so many great stories. And thank you for the album list. Guess I know what I'm gonna listen to...
This was great! Thanks dudes. One small bone to pick. Holdsworth did the Tempest album and Bundles and got the attention of the world's guitar players anyway a few years ahead of joining Tony Williams' Lifetime for a couple of albums. I don't know the sales numbers but perhaps "Believe It" introduced him to a different and smaller world.
Great content, thank you so much. Please tell me there’s more! I could listen to him all day and would love to hear him talk about his rapport to high fidelity. I remember you did a piece on Stereophile on the great John Hebert who said Billy turned him to the audiophile side of music. Thanks again.
These are all relative newbies in the history of jazz drumming. Also, these are Billy’s choices and he can’t be expected to mention every jazz drummer since the beginning of time.
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 understood. Billy Kilson is no kid. He’s been around for a while but he certainly not in the era of Buddy Rich and the Joneses.😉
The amount of information he can recall in the moment is astounding.
I love this conversation you had with Billy and his records that are important to him .
Fantastic !!!

This was fantastic! Would love if you could do this with Kenny Washington as well 🙌
Kenny Washington refuses all requests
What about Billy Kilson, Lee Pearson or Antonio Sanchez?
