Long before Galaxy Quest, in the old Star Trek Logs short story anthologies there was one where the cast of the show gets transported into the Star Trek universe much like the original Mirror Universe episode. Scotty notices Nimoy's fake ears. A very good story.

Final Frontier and Nemesis. The two low points.
Sybok was apparently a telepathic prodigy AND a warp drive physics prodigy. You can explain away Sybok's silly brainwashing as a type of Mind Meld similar to the silly Reman telepathy in Nemesis. But, yes, it's far better than the JJ-Verse.

Nobody gonna mention that the decks on the enterprise are backwards and there are too many of them (making it ≈20 decks taller than the enterprise D?

Emotional manipulation is what Sybok uses, and you only need to look at today's political landscape to understand what a unique and effective tool it can be. I think its perfectly reasonable for him to amass followers in a short amount of time. It's not really brainwashing in the classical sense. If you can hook someone emotionally, it overrides all their other logical faculties even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Also I think it can be assumed time compression accounts for how quickly he appears to build his army
