So, Mikael Akerfeldt, singer, co-lead guitarist is the mastermind behind Opeth, writing almost all songs himself and basically the frontman in all aspects, has been part of the band since early nineties. Up to 2011 all albums - except one - could be classified as progressive death metal. Besides the cover mentioned in the comments they have also done a very nice cover of Deep Purples Soldier of Fortune
Another one in for the rabbit hole :^) You should check out Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, Burden, Deliverance, Faith in Others... actually nearly any Opeth Song x) They are just amazing and every Song/Album is a different Journey! I would also recommend to start with studio versions first before checking them out live (even though they are amazing live, the studio versions are just mixed and mastered beautifully!)
Nice video! Opeth’s respect for AIC is evident is this cover. You’re right, they did take one liberty by extending the guitar solo over the last chorus straight to the outro, but it was done in very good taste I think.

So Opeth has changed lineups a lot, and don't have any original members, but they came into their own with the addition of Mikael Åkerfeldt who is the lead singer, 1 of the guitar players (he does both lead and rhythm as does the other guitar player), and the principal song writer. Even though he isn't an original member, he IS Opeth like how Trent Reznor is NIN. They have a lot of bangers that range from folk to prog rock to straight up death metal, many times in the same song. As for other covers, they do a great cover of The Bridge of Sighs
Interesting to see someone's first exposure to Opeth be a cover of a song they really love. I agree that this is a really faithful cover, not just in the general instrumentals but how Mikael manages to sound similar to Layne. What makes it great, though, is that if you're an Opeth fan you can definitely hear that this is Opeth. Dunno if you're a metal guy but you should probably check out their own stuff at some point. You can start with more prog rock stuff if growls are off putting, but everyone who appreciates Opeth can learn to appreciate the harsh vocals.
Really like the channel. Just watched your reaction for Electric Callboy's "Hypa Hypa." You asked about any others. They are my favorite band since they debuted in 2010. Although they dumped the lead singer (Sushi) like 2 years ago. The only exceptional song they had in that decade was "Best Day." But when Nico joined as lead singer, that's when they started their meteoric rise. By next summer, biggest band in the world. But anything starting with "Hypa Hypa" to their most recent from 3 weeks ago "Hurrikan" is excellent. What I would recommend if you don't want to listen to everything in between is that you listen to is "We Got The Moves" then "Hurrikan" then the most mandatory would be to go to their TH-cam channel and find the live concert performance of "Prism" but it must say ACOUSTIC version. I was on the verge of making a big mistake. A big one if you know what I mean. And that video dropped just before. It literally saved me

Both are great bands on their own, so check out Opeth original music. Probably Harlequin Forest would be a great start, another one is perhaps less popular but imo a true masterpiece - Hessian Peel.

I am also a huge fan of Alice in Chains, and Opeth is my favorite band. What a lucky convergence for me :) You should check out some of Opeth's original work. They have some fantastic progressive rock/metal music. They have very mellow songs as well as extremely heavy and everything between. I think a good starting song would be "Death Whispered a Lullaby" if you are curious about Opeth. Would love to see your reaction to it!
